There's going to be one hell of a Pro Bowl team on the suspended list. Maybe they can try that instead of the current format. Active Pro Bowlers vs Suspended Pro Bowlers. Hmmmm...

I just saw the pictures. I would expect most 'common folk' to be in jail after doing something like that to a four year old.

This is a north/south type deal. When I was reading the story on this I knew where this was going. Growing up in the south I got whipped. I whip my son too. I only whip him with my hand though. When he gets older he will get it with a belt. That is a form of punishment that people down here very strongly believe in. When I was reading that it made me think back to numerous times of getting it with a switch. Most southern kids have heard their dads and especially their mamaws say "go cut me a switch and if it's one that I don't like I'M gonna go cut it and you're REALLY gonna get it." That is just a part of southern culture. However, I DO think that 5 years old is too young to get it with a switch. I can see how the kid would get the marks like that because when kids get whipped with a switch they always try to spin around and cover up their legs or butts or whatever. Me and all my buddies would sometimes talk about our "switch stories". I''M NOT SAYING THAT AP WAS JUSTIFIED IN THE EXTREMITY HE WENT TO! I'm just saying that what he did to his kid, as far as whipping him with a switch, is something people have done in the south for as long as I know. Please do not think of this as my way of condoning child abuse. I DO NOT CONDONE THAT. It is just that southern people do believe in whipping but I can honestly say that, for me and most people I know, when you got it with a switch it was because you had REALLY done something bad. The vast majority of all the times I was whipped were with a belt and that's the story of pretty much everyone I know. Do northern people use switches? I've always considered that a southern thing. I've really always considered whipping a southern thing.

Michael Vick said the same thing about fighting and killing dogs...

Culture doesn't excuse you from having to follow the laws. You don't get to whip someone so hard that you slice them open. That's abuse, not discipline.

Yeah that dog fighting thing is NOT a southern thing! I do not know ONE SINGLE PERSON that has EVER had a dogfight! However, CHICKEN FIGHTING is a BIG DEAL down here. I used to go to the chicken fights when I was in high school. My buddy's dad was a big time chicken fighter and would make a ton of money doing it. It is actually illegal but the law always looked the other way. The last time I went to one one redneck pulled a knife on another redneck that he felt was trying to cheat and after that I never went back. I never bet on them or anything. We would just go watch them fight. The rednecks hollering and cheering on chickens was the most entertaining thing about it. They would say "SHOOT ON EEM RED BIRD!" "SHOOT ON EEM SPECKLED BIRD!" That must seriously sound like the Twilight Zone to you?! LOL! I agree that AP doesn't have the right to break the law. I actually don't know what Texas's laws are on whipping. I would figure you would have to REALLY hurt your kid to get in trouble for that in Texas. They are a very conservative state.

I lived all over growing up. My northern grandparents would tell me to go get a switch, and you knew not to go get a thin one. In fact, I was saying that to Ray on Twitter a few hours ago. Nobody I knew in Virginia as a kid got a switch, so, I don't think it can be lumped into one side of the country or the other. Perhaps it's more acceptable in rural communities.

About Texas- I lived there for a while. I was thinking that if you were indicted for switching your kid, it must have been really bad. Then I read the details and saw the pictures. That's child abuse wherever you live.

Yeah I finally saw the pics too and I really think he went too far. I guess "rural" might actually be a better way to put it. I'm really surprised about VA not whipping with a switch though. Was it southern VA or northern VA? Those are really like 2 different states really. Sorta like the farther south you go in Florida the more "unsouthern" the people become. But the panhandle is more of an old fashioned, conservative, type mindset ya know?

Growing up as the son of a naval officer, we had to stand at attention and we got it with a belt.
There's always a bunch of people who think they know how to raise your children better than you do.

Yeah I'm a firm believer in whipping but that was definitely too much. It's one thing to leave a mark. It is a completely different thing to cut them in multiple places. My pastor, at my home church, used to say his mother was very patriotic because "she'd apply the stripes and you'd see the stars." LOL. What AP did though seems to me like he probably whipped him when he was too mad. I always take a second to sorta calm down before I whip mine because if you do it when you're really mad you could really hurt them. Also I always limit MYSELF to three smacks on his legs. I feel it is better to just set a policy for myself. Apparently AP didn't do that.

True that man and in my experience of dealing with people like that they are usually people who don't have kids or if they DO have kids their kids are the worst behaved of the bunch.

Punishment with a switch is definitely a southern thing. Never heard of it til I lived in Georgia. I'm from Pittsburgh. It was the belt and when I got it, I very much deserved it. It taught you well do not do the same stupid things again.

Nowadays, Kids don't even listen to their parents or other authoritative figures most of the time cause they know they can get away with not being disciplined which leads to an inexcuseable entitlement society.

Go ahead and whip your kid in public and watch how many people whip out there camera phones and report your so called abuse.

There a difference between child abuse and discipline but for many in this nanny state society consider anything other than giving your child a trophy and letting them run wild is you being a horrible parent.

I live in Richmond. The northern section towards Washington D.C. is quite different than Richmond and south from there. It's almost like two different states.

Yeah I went to DC a few years ago when my stepmom was lobbying and I was just there to see the sites. I could tell that the VA people there weren't "southern" at all. I think it is so much different because so many people come there from all over for political careers or gvt careers in general. It's just weird to think that the actual capital of the confederacy is now not a very southern place.

There are actual "sports" leagues for kids where they don't even keep score!!! The ONLY leagues my kids will play in will be leagues where there is an absolute winner and absolute loser. I love the ep of King of the Hill where Hanks is devastated that Bobby leaves football for soccer but then gets sick of soccer. It is hilarious. My wife has asked me what I would do if Ben wanted to play soccer and I always say "cry". LOL.
