A game of inches.....

And unfortunately it's the 6-8 inches between the ears of the steelers that cause us the most problems. I don't pretend to know that firing this or that guy is what we must do, but if accountability really starts with the top, then we fall into the same idiotic patterns far too often to want to keep things as is.

Constantly not being aware of here game situation (3rd and 8 and going for the tackle for loss instead of containing the receiver and stopping the first down), being incredibly fooled on every single play action bootleg and constant overpursuit, Ben not running on 3rd and short for a first down, but attempting to run on 4th and 10 with the game on the line, constantly wasting timeouts, and fittingly ending with stepping out of bounds untouched (Antonio brown is great, but how does that happen? Just like the game last year or a couple of years ago when he fumbled inexplicably in the middle of the field with nobody near him). Throwing the ball up for grabs on a bomb when it's 3rd and 3 and you've been moving the ball, and clock management issues a plenty. These are not bad players. They're the players that have more than adequate talent and have us in a position to win more often than not, but there's a pattern of brain-deadedness in situations that can't be overcome. Of course, there are times when we are just outplayed or out talented, but other teams don't give us the Christmas gifts that we give out game after game. The teams that win are the ones that do things well and consistently. We do some things well, but nothing consistently and you still never know where the next screwup is going to come from.

Certainly this team would not have gone anywhere had they made the playoffs. But it isn't for lack of talent....it's for those pesky 6-8 inches....

I just kind of feel like we were finally and mercifully put out of our misery today.

 

Good post, but I think it has more to do with our coach and his lack of discipline and attention to details then being a victim of a few inches. It's the small things that win games in the NFL and that doesn't appear to be the strength of our HC. I've never been a "fire the guy" fan until this year. Too much of the same for too long now.
