I heard them touch on this on NFL radio and sure enough, the Steelers offense (not counting defensive scores or special team scores) have only racked up 8 touchdowns over the last 7 games. Pretty amazing that they won 5 of those 7 games. For comparison, this offense has scored 24 touchdowns this year, last year they scored 50 offensive touchdowns with Big Ben at the helm. It sure would have been nice to have this defense last year. Now I understand why I am so miserable watching the Steelers offense, just not much to cheer about. Here's hoping they finish strong and score more than 1 touchdown per game.

seriously though, they posted that stat we are dead last in RZ efficiency this year. Not good, some different plays and play calls would be a start.

    Hey TapOut64.

Numerous reasons for this unacceptable performance regarding your statement: "Pretty amazing that they won 5 of those 7 games". The primary one, and most obvious, is credit to the New and Improved "D" for keeping us in these games. However, you can only go to the well so many times before it completely dries up. Another reason is the injuries that really have prevented us from putting our best and complete set of "O" starters all in the game at the same time.

Then, of course there is the young QBs and their inexperience. However, this is attached at the hip with the ineptness of the coaching staff at times. For instance, where is the utilization of the TEs? Also, they have not always put the QBs in the most advantageous positions to be successful. Their play-calling has been sketchy and inconsistent at times. When it is creative, they go to it one too many times so it now becomes predictable; thus leaving some of us just scratching our heads.

They were talking about that on NFL Network. Guy was wondering if that has ever been done with a team actually winning.

Which is why I wonder where the guys who post Steelers scoring more then 20 points in the score prediction thread where they think those points will come from.

A punt return for a TD, a pick six and 2 FG's set up by the defense. That's the only way I see us scoring 20.

If the other guys only score 19, does it really matter?

After all the failed attempts at OC I will officially throw my hat in the ring for calling the plays from my couch. I know I can do a better job than Fitch, Haley and Arians.

Arians can light up a scoreboard. Even with Mike Wallace.

Most points come from passing the ball. I don't know what people expect with the QBs the Steelers had starting this year? The coaches are extremely limited in what the offense can accomplish with this group of young QBs.

I know I did. I thought when Ben went down we were looking at a 3-13 season. It's incredible that we have a chance to make the playoffs.

Wonder is this the lowest scoring team ever.

I usually figure 1 offensive touchdown, 2 field goals, and depending who they are playing, 1 defensive touchdown, that's 20 points at most.

Yeah, the offense sucks. We have 3rd and 4th stringers starting. What the hell do you expect? We're 8-6 with two games left and in better overall playoff shape than we were last year with Ben and AB with the crappy Minkah-less defense.

I certainly don't think Fichtner has done a good job, but it isn't all on him with this lousy collection of offensive talent. This is why I argued so strongly one another thread when somebody said they are doing fine without Brown and Bell. They clearly are not. Not that those two would have fixed everything, but the offense is a disaster and the play calling and the loss of Roethlisberger aren't the only reasons it is that bad.

Good point. Perhaps he should amend his point to compare this offense to those in the last 40 years.

The offense score 1 TD, the defense score 1 TD, and they kick 2 FGs that's 20 points :hehehe:.

Lowest scoring Pittsburgh NFL team was the 1934 Pittsburgh Pirates (really called that). 51 pts. in 12 games to finish 2-10.

Next lowest was the 1940 Pittsburgh Steelers (first year as the Steelers). 60 pts. in 11 games to finish 2-7-2.

Lowest scoring Pittsburgh team that played 16 games:
    - 1998 Steelers with 263 pts.
(Lost last 5 games of season, Cowher's first losing season, C. Gailey left as o.c. that year)
-1989 Steelers were close with 265 pts.
    (C. Nolls last playoff appearance, 9-7 lost in divisional round, started the season losing to the Browns 51-0 worse loss in Steelers history, next game lost to Bengals 41-10, great job Chuck)

    1970s Steelers:
14 game Seasons we averaged 21.9 pts. a game.
16 game seasons (just 2) we averaged 24.1 pts. a game. (This just after the Mel Blount rule enforced in 1978.)

Looks like I was wrong about the seventies being low scoring offenses.

    Edit: stats compiled using pro-football-reference.com
1970s pts. per game might be skewed because I don't know if they included playoff games in their total points.
