3 OLB 6 safeties

In what world does this make sense. With Ola going on the IR and Berhe signed that's what we have right now I'm lost as to what they are doing.

 

We are putting together the worst run defense in the NFL? Juts a guess.... either that or we think the new tackling rules have changed the game dramatically. This could back fire if the officials don't enforce the rules how we apparently think they will. This seems like a gamble not worth taking. Power beats speed. OR maybe were going to a 4-3 base?

 

I assume Thomas is being considered an option at outside linebacker, but I agree that it doesn't make sense. I get putting a priority on special teams, but this is a bit much, especially with Watt missing so much time in the pre-season.

 

Be patient I’m sure they have a plan.

LB is a LB is a LB. They are moving these guys all over the place. That is the plan. I think we need to get the traditional base 3-4 out of our minds. This could or should be called mass confusion defense. Don't know from where they are coming or who is coming.

 

With our communication issues. I think it's us that's gonna be confused. I respectfully disagree with the notion that a LB is a LB. If that was the case why did they make Dupree switch sides. If we were gonna use confusion as our strategy ,why would it matter who was coming from where? My biggest fear is that the good teams with the smarter coaches are gonna trap us in these abstract defenses by going hurry up and not allowing substitutions . This has the potential to get ugly. Is there no talk of just moving Adams back to the 53 or are we really gonna roll with 3OLBs and hope guys with no experience at OLB just give it their best shot? We may be able to cause some confusion on passing downs but what happens when teams decide to run at our quasi OLBs

 

I doubt they keep 6 safeties before the first game, they will probably sign a player before the Browns game.

 

Exactly. A lot of these roster moves are calculated to ensure they keep who they want on IR etc.

 

We ran this a lot in the Tenn. game with our starters. It seemed to work pretty well. We shall see.

The Browns cut Carl Nassib, I'd sign for a week find out what he knows use him as an edge rusher in the 4 dlinemen package as just a pass rusher then cut him

 

I'm really not sure why NaVorro Bowman is still a free agent.

Well that's what it looks like they are considering. Thomas and Vince were working off the edges.

 

I'm from the old school as well and I feel the game is still won in the trenches. The name of the game is pass rush and pass protect but you still need to able to convert short yardage situations by running the football. I understand what they may be trying to do but when push comes to shove ,when the game is on the line your guys better be more physical than theirs. The reason we have problems with Jax is because they overpower us on both side of the ball. We didn't lose the playoff game because of Ben's turnovers,we lost because our D didn't make a single tackle for loss the entire game. We were dominated in the trenches to the point where Cam and Tuitt were invisible. I'm m sure you guys don't need to be reminded of the debacles on our 4th down conversions. Our coaches had no faith that we could line up and run right at them for crucial first downs. Once again trench warfare....

I'm sorry but I don't have much faith in our coaches as "trendsetters " I don't see anyone else in the league trying to reinvent the wheel to this extent . Like I have said my biggest concern is teams trapping us in certain defenses to take advantage of mismatches. Ideally you would like your personnel on the field to be able to morph into different looks and relying on wholesale substitutions to try and accomplish what you are trying to do is no easy task and can be easily circumvented. It's going to be fascinating to see it employed....I just can't believe the loss of Shazier has caused this wholesale change in defensive philosophy. I hope it works . I don't want to hear Tomlin a few weeks into the season saying" we have to go back to the lab" again. .....

Has to be. He saw action out there in preseason. Besides they will have Adams to call up if injuries occur, and Ola looks to be out for only 6 weeks.

Looks like they were serious about all their extra safety sub-package looks.

 

Even setting aside Bell and who goes when he is activated, does anyone think this is the 53 for Cleveland? I certainly don't. The Steelers have more cap room than they usually have going into a season. I expect a move, potentially several.

That said, 6 safeties and 3 OLBers is very weird, although 2 of those safeties are essentially STs players.

The Steelers Depot guys have been tossing around that idea all preseason. I honestly don't know much about Simon. I don't pay very close attention to bad teams' players.
