U heard it here first. The Steelers are going with a 3 3 5 defense. This is the reason for the multiple Db, Defense Hybrid picks and lack of LB drafts. U dont believe me? Look at what defense our new secondary coach played with. Michigan and Penn St are both 3 3 5 defenses. This will be the Steelers future as the pieces are in motion. Believe the hype!

Yeah, the Marcus Allen pick got me more excited for Edmunds with the possibility of this or him being a tweener like Kam Chancellor. Only problem is if I trust coaching to actually pull it off.

We are and will continue to be a base 3-4 Defense. But we play more sub-packages ,( dime, nickle, big nickle) than base and have done so for years. This trend will continue.

"heard it here first"? I think it's more likely this is some existing board member creating a fake account to add voices to that argument... several posters have been talking about this. :hmm:

Pittsburgh is not going stir crazy and going all out sub packages. The 3-4 still has its role in today's game. Just not as much as it did over 18 years ago and nevermind 38 years ago. The issue is that the 3-4 will be used on uncommon occasion.

We will see more Nickel and Dime defenses but not to the point of abandoning the 3-4 all together.

Still need edge guys to be disruptive either way. Outside of Bud and TJ we are sorely lacking....

If the 3-3-5 is the future of the NFL, it won't last long. The Jags winning the Super Bowl led by Fournette's record 2500 rushing yd, 30 TDseason will put an end to that fad.

Depends on the team and their style. Remember the Jaguars lined it up and ran right at us in the playoffs. No 3-3-5 defense needed. Our traditional run D couldn't handle it when they showed a running formation.

With all that said, they realize the need for versatility, and I wouldn't be surprised to see more 3-3-5 sub-packages.

I can see them using a rookie like Marcus Allen as a ILB, subbing in for Vince Williams, on long yardage 3rd downs. Because Marcus almost have ILB size & likes to hit people, an excellent tackler, & can really cover. That alignment is a 3-3-5. One reason why we could rarely get off the field on 3rd downs is because of the poor coverage in the middle of the field. A 3-3-5 may be a fix, although we may be vulnerable to a surprise run play...

You guys are getting carried away with this sub package stuff. At some point your gonna need to knuckle down and play conventional defense. I can easily see these fancy sub packages getting gashed for 200 yards a game on the ground.

    If I'm a team like Jax, I'd give Fournette the ball 50 times against a 3 3 5.

I still think we will be a better defense this year than last. We needed one stop last year to win vs the jags and we couldn't get it. We have far better personnel now then we did then. No worries here. I believe we will have a better offense too under fichtner.
