It was just awful on two levels. First, the point makes it a 3 point game so that a field goal is a tying score instead of a hk ahead score. Second, your backup has just come into the game and you run a rub route in the congestion of the goal line that depends upon timing?

Tomlin's stupid game management is probably going to cost us at least 1 more game this season. He keeps getting away with being a fool, but it's going to come home to roost sooner or later.

The only explanation I can think of is that he was assuming Arizona would score a TD and he wanted to try to be down 3 instead 4. But, that was a stupid decision.

I keep wondering if his aggressive approach on 2pts is because he fathered the damn rule.

Well as the old cliche goes, style points don't matter.....but scoreboard points do and game situations matter as well. Just wish when the whole world can see the error of a decision (and not in hindsight) our staff could see it too. Glad for the win! (And yeah that Colts thing was bizarre. As though the Pats needed MORE of an advantage in that game....heck they had already recovered an onside kick without ever having possession)....

Why he did it? It's kinda like the age old question about how many licks to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop. The world may never know.

There have actually been multiple studies on this and numbers have ranged from anywhere over 3,000 to under 300.

What's amazing to me is all the dumb errors Tomlin makes over the course of a season, it seems as if no one ever brings it to his attention so that he can correct it. How does nobody in the franchise tell Tomlin that he's making the wrong decision. Surely he's not that arrogant that people are telling him and he's continuing to do it anyway. Especially the clock management issues that have been going on since 2007. If the rest of the world can see it, how has nobody brought up the issue with him yet?

    Where is the oversight?

I was thinking the same thing. Arizona was moving the ball at will during that time. But still was a stupid decision.

So far this year we just seem to have gone for 2 roughly half of the time (based on the logic that you convert them roughly half of the time).

I don't think it was a particular situation-specific call, it was just the turn of the 2 pt try.

They hinted early in the season that they would be going for the 2pt more than the league average but that is when we didn't have a kicker. I wouldn't have been as upset had Ben been in trying it though. But even then it certainly was a perplexing call.

    Agreed
. What really gets me is he is so inconsistent in his ideals. After the SD game he said he was gonna ride or die with Bell but just the week before on 3rd and 4th and 2 he didn't touch the ball. Like many have said you could live with the bad decisions if we learned from them, but we don't and I'm waiting for the day it costs us big time. As a whole we have to be smarter as a team and that goes for all aspects....

A lot of pro coaches couldn't care less if people criticize them. Pro players are the same. They just have this elitist mentality that they are the smartest guys in the room and their detractors are all complete morons who, in the minds of players and coaches, if they were as smart as they claim would be coaches as well. Tomlin wants to pound that drum about how "the odds are in my favor because 2pt conversions work most of the time". Well that might be true BUT one huge, glaring, fact he's conveniently leaving out is that MOST of those 2pt plays that make up those numbers weren't ran by THIRD STRING QB'S WHO HAVE LITERALLY NEVER PLAYED IN AN NFL GAME BEFORE. THAT is why the "odds weren't in his favor". Wow. Someone please explain this to him.

I really was hoping someone here could come up with a logical explanation for going for 2, when we were up by 2...

The ONLY thing I could come up with, was, he thought we were stopping them, but he wasn`t confident we could even get in scoring position again, so he wanted to get as many points as he possibly, could, while we had the chance to...

Pretty flawed logic, but I was REALLLY trying to give him an out...

Football 101 says, if you have a chance to go up by 3, take it...

    You got rid of Scobee...

Trust Boswell to make a routine PAT...

Even if the "Routine" is a few yards farther back, than it used to be...

Let the guy do his job, that you hired him for... He hasn`t given you reason to doubt, yet...

    C`mon Man!!!

    GO STEELERS!!!

Serious question: what ever happened to the old chart college coaches used to swear by for when to go for 2? Anybody else remember that?

Yes, but I don`t remember the details..

I will leave that to Mac, or PWP...

For me... It has to do with when it would make the other team need a td to win, or bring it up to a fg to tie, if you were down by one, before the conversion...late in the game...

There are a lot of circumstances where it makes sense...

And I will even give Tomlin a pass on the sitch, where your kicker sucks, so you mite as well try it...

Or, just to "put pressure on the other team", IF your starting qb is in, and you feel you can be successfull... early in he game, as Ben has said..

    Yesterday was just DUMB.:thumbsdown:IMO.

    GO STEELERS!

Let's not forget the inexplicable calls at the end of the first half to NOT run down the clock by kneeling on the ball and escape with only a 7 pt deficit. Throw TWICE and force yourself to punt back to AZ in what cd have been great field position. Our punter kicked a bomb thank God after being short all game long. Had that not happened, AZ cd have easily got into FG range and gone up 10 at half. Or 14, which wd have been game over likely in what wd have been a momentum changing turn. It cd have and shd have bit MT square in the shorts. He got lucky. Blows my mind his thinking when nearly every fan could easily have made the right call in both of these situations.
