Im not sure I buy this.

We use a 2nd round pick on a #4 WR? What's the percentage of snaps we take in 4 WR?

I think MB lying to the team a year ago may have cut deeper than we realized.

    Bryant and Rogers.

Or will JuJu become our #2 and will Bryant be bidding adieu?

I wanted us to sign a vet WR this off season because MB is as insanely talented as he is stupid. We signed Hunter. I was good with that.

Brown, Bryant and Rogers are 1-3. Coates will get reps. We signed Hunter. We have Heyward-Bey. Ayers and Hamilton are around. WR in the 2nd was stupid.

    15 Ayers, Demarcus WR 5-9 190 22 1 Houston
    84 Brown, Antonio WR 5-10 181 28 8 Central Michigan
    10 Bryant, Martavis WR 6-4 211 25 3 Clemson
    14 Coates, Sammie WR 6-1 212 24 3 Auburn
    83 Hamilton, Cobi WR 6-2 201 26 2 Arkansas
    88 Heyward-Bey, Darrius WR 6-2 210 30 9 Maryland
    Hunter, Justin WR 6-4 203 25 4 Tennessee
    17 Rogers, Eli WR 5-10 187 24 3 Louisville
    80 Severin, Canaan WR 6-2 205 24 2 Virginia
    Smith-Schuster, JuJu WR 6-1 215 20 R USC
    Stewart, Dez WR 6-2 200 24 1 Ohio Dominican
    16 Tucker, Marcus WR 5-10 190 24 1 Northern Michigan

How does JuJu replace Bryant? Their game is different. Ones a tough possession receiver and ones a burner.

I agree with RPO when he says you can't look at receivers as 1,2,3,4 any more.

Steelers arent moving on from Bryant, it would be insanity. Now in 2 years they may move on for contractual purposes and the risk associated but why move on from a guy you control for 2 more years and is one of the best receivers in the game?

I'm not saying they should. And hopefully I am wrong. No doubt about that. I've been dreaming of an offense with Ben, Brown, Bryant and Bell all healthy and on the field.

But how many times us Ben going to throw the ball this year?

AB is AB. Bell catches 70+ balls. Eli Rogers had a fantastic rookie season and a guy I could easily see going for 800+ yards from the slot. Even Ayers shows promise.

How many WRs are we going to cut? Why sign DHB to a 3 year deal last year? Why sign Hunter?

All the arrows points to a separation from Bryant.

    I hope I'm wrong.

It just doesn't add up with the 2nd pick? See list of receivers above,
somebody's gotta go, could we package some of these players for a
safety to replace Mike Mitchell? Him and Cockrell are our weak links.
that will never get us past the Patriots.

Bens conversation about retirement may have meant nothing or maybe it did mean " get me a god damn receiver that can catch and stay on the field"

    15 Ayers, Demarcus WR 5-9 190 22 1 Houston Practice Squad eligible, I believe.
    84 Brown, Antonio WR 5-10 181 28 8 Central Michigan #1 guy
10 Bryant, Martavis WR 6-4 211 25 3 Clemson Posted a video of himself being timed in the 40 at 4.27.
14 Coates, Sammie WR 6-1 212 24 3 Auburn Still a question mark until proven otherwise.
    83 Hamilton, Cobi WR 6-2 201 26 2 Arkansas Good as gone.
88 Heyward-Bey, Darrius WR 6-2 210 30 9 Maryland Might be the end of the line, depending on how draftees participate on special teams.
Hunter, Justin WR 6-4 203 25 4 Tennessee Forgotten man, but his inconsistency may keep him off the roster. Would not be shocked if he is cut.
17 Rogers, Eli WR 5-10 187 24 3 Louisville Great slot guy, but JuJu will probably take some of those snaps.
    80 Severin, Canaan WR 6-2 205 24 2 Virginia Same as Cobi.
Smith-Schuster, JuJu WR 6-1 215 20 R USC Will get playing time, at the expense of both Rogers and Coates.
Stewart, Dez WR 6-2 200 24 1 Ohio Dominican Camp body.
    16 Tucker, Marcus WR 5-10 190 24 1 Northern Michigan Ditto

Brown, Bryant, Smith-Schuster, Rogers, Coates, DHB, Hunter in that order, in my opinion. They will keep 6 at the most, so DHB & Hunter are on the bubble.

One thing this pick does is put Bryant on notice and for him to send stupid tweets to teammates just shows how immature he really is.

I can see the Rooney's looking at serious offers for his talent. Hate to be skeptical but that's just the way I see it.

No way. They want to see Bryant succeed and will do everything they can to make sure that happens.

Its all about match ups, they'll get him involved. I spent no time looking at receivers because despite the assertions that beat writers were making about taking a WR high, I didnt believe they would. Have to say, love what I am seeing from JuJu. He'll be very useful moving the chains and redzone target.

I guess we'll find out about Bryant but Im banking that the Steelers know how much better the offense is with him than without and act accordingly. He's done everything asked of him since his suspension plus is training hard. He'll be a beast for us this season.

Great pick, this kid is the real deal, watched him play since freshman, he has big hands 10 1/2 and catches everything thrown his way, he is physical and contests every throw, double coverage doesnt bother him and being the number 2 this season is a strong possibility, Ben had to be smiling from this pick, he ran a 4.5 at the combine plenty good enough to match his physical style of play, I wanted us to draft him before the draft and said so on this board and mentioned yesterday taking a WR in the 2 or 3 round BPA was quite possible...

From this SB Nation draft report:

The best comparison for Smith-Schuster of the current players in the NFL is that of All-Pro wide receiver Dez Bryant. Much like Bryant, Smith-Schuster is a strong, physical player who isn’t afraid of running routes across the middle of the field and thrive to make spectacular jump ball catches. They are both fluid athletes who have great body control to catch the ball at awkward angles in high points. Both are highly competitive leaders who leave everything on the field.

With the abundance of talent at the wide receiver position in this year’s draft, Smith-Schuster is most likely to be taken in the 2-3 rounds for a team looking for strong number two wide receiver along an established pro—or a potential top wide out for a young quarter back in need of a reliable target. At any rate, Smith-Schuster should hit the ground running and make an immediate impact in the NFL.

I agree. Did anyone really think that the Steelers would send Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes packing after 1 (maybe 2?) Marijuana infraction? That really put a damper on my trip to Cuba in 2010. :lolol: never watch sports when on vacation.

On the positive side, Ben needs weapons to throw to. Outside of AB, we don't have much reliability. Wasn't a need pick, but I can see him replacing one of the scrub wr's we have, but don't see much impact as a rookie

Nice selective use of stats. How about

Vs Penn State (Rose Bowl) 7-133, 1 TD
    Vs Utah 8-98

    2015

    Vs. Stanford 8-153, 1 TD
    Vs. Utah 8-143, 1 TD
Vs. Notre Dame 6-139, 1 TD
    Vs. UCLA 6-85
    Vs. Washington 6-82

Also, the teams he blew up in 2016 were Arizona and Arizona State, so we're not talking about beating non-FBS competition. Sorry, but your use of stats was biased.

My intention was to show games against bigger name schools and against draftable CBs from this draft class.

Knowing how JuJu performed against Washington's and Alabama's secondaries are far more telling than Arizona and Arizona St.

I did miss the Penn St game, was only looking at regular season, should have included that one.

You must be slightly concerned that in 2016 that the vast majority of his production came in only 3 games.

Not concerned at all. I watched every game that's on the draft breakdown site, and I see the traits I want to see in that type of receiver - plus some big play capability to boot. On some of the plays that went to other receivers, he had good separation but was not the target. I remember one red zone play in particular that went to a teammate for a TD over the middle. When they showed the replay, you can see JuJu eating the corner's lunch on the outside and getting 4 yards of vertical separation. I've read that he went through injuries in 2016, and I'm pretty sure Darnold wasn't the QB vs. Alabama. There are no receivers that come into the NFL as finished products, so I look for traits. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

It's not that I don't like him. Just would have liked to have seen better games vs Alabama and Washington specifically.

He had a goal line TD Vs Notre Dame which is exactly the kind of route and catch that is necessary in the NFL.

My point was we can't count on Coates or Bryant at this point. Which makes wr a major need. Look what happened last year when we had brown and nothing else
