Do we really need a 3rd string QB?

Can a roster spot be better used somewhere else?

It's an interesting question. It's about what the drop off is between the 3rd string and a guy brought in off the street with one week to prepare for the next game (which is what we'd have to do if one QB went down); as well as the likelihood of the 3rd string getting poached from the practice squad.

Probably don't need a #2 either. With the way this OL blocks and the way our D plays it will take an elite QB for us to win games.

So basically if Ben goes down we have zero chance of winning anyway , might as well go to the Wildcat 3 runs and a punt to kill the clock and keep the score down.

No, there's no need for Landry to be on the 53 put him on the PS only. They can use that roster spot for someone else.

No not really. How many times in a game would you ever get two quarterbacks hurt. Very very rare.
Practice squad Landry, nobody is going to attempt to pick him up, they would be on crazy pills to get him, guy hasn't shown a thing in two years, almost worst QB under pressure I have ever seen, never attempts to even get out of the pocket.
Go with Big Ben and Bruce. If one of the two of them get hurt move Landry up from the practice. Then hope to god, he doesn't have to play.

First tell me who you would add and why. I always love this debate, the wasted roster spot. It is always the same thing, someone feels that a player they don't like is wasting a valuable roster spot that could be filled by someone who can actually contribute. I ask who and where and it almost always special teams. Yep lets cut a 3rd string QB and sign some 5th or 6th string WR or RB so they can play special teams and maybe get in on kick coverage.

yes we do need a 3rd string qb. we just can't find one.

jones, I have backed you since we drafted you, but man, you really don't look good. no pocket presence what so ever. kay at least looked the part to some extent. I'd keep him on the PS. sorry landry.

Put Landry on the PS, at least a player at a another position will contribute even if it's on special teams.

I never understood why teams insist on carrying 3QBs. I ask you honestly, suppose the worst case scenario happens, Ben breaks his throwing hand in Week 1 and Grad blows a knee in week2; don't you think the Steelers are bringing in vets to try out before they give the keys to Landry?

if so, why keep him? I ain't seeing much long term upside.

I think the only reason Jones will make the team, same for Adams, is that they were high draft picks. I absolutely think that we would in theory find a better player from other team's roster cuts today or tomorrow, but I don't think that the Steelers will swap them for other, potentially better, players.

I am just glad I won't have to experience fans calling for Jones to come in each time Ben throws a pick in the regular season...

I've also been a supporter of Jones. I always gave him the excuse of playing behind back up lineman and not getting proper protection. I would say now it's now time to cut him and attempt to sign him to the PS. I would hate to lose a better talent at a position we have some depth at ( WR,LB,DL ) to carry a 3rd string QB that doesn't seem to be getting any better

If the clowns cut conner Shaw, there's the guy. He at least, showed some sign of life in the pocket and he runs too. I'd take him over gradkowski as well. He doesn't look comfortable in our system neither.

Yes ... but we'll likely keep 3 QBs anyway. Force of habit. If we are going to keep 3 QBs, I'd rather sign Charlie Batch and his 90 year old arm rather than keeping a QB that panics in preseason games.

Dude come on Shaw over Gradkowski, at least Gradkowski has won games in the league Shaw won't even make the Browns. They want a veteran to be Ben's backup.

He's just an arm during practice. He already knows the system and he can run the scout squad. But that doesn't mean I would keep him. I would of cut him during the first cuts. I'm pretty sure it will be another quarterback on the waiver wire that can come in and do a better job then Landry Jones. What a wasted pick. 4th round?

Tony Dungy was the emergency Q.B. for the Steelers in 1977 and got to play against the Oilers when both Terry Bradshaw and Mike Kruczek were hurt but a 3rd string Q.B. playing is rare.

Funny thing is, 2 seasons ago, they needed to go to their 3rd string, Batch, when Lefty got hurt but they didn't put him in because he wasn't prepared.

So, is Landry really going to see any work during the week to be prepared to step in? Batch couldn't do it and he's 10 times the QB Landry is. If you aren't going to play the 3rd stringer, then why carry him. I suppose the answer is if they had no choice but thats real comforting.

If we start loosing o-line guys again... maybe more specialists there or a serious blocking TE?

With our current line you need to be mobile. Grad definitely is not and has looked like hot garbage behind our line. Shaw is definitely an upgrade. I'm a gamecocks fan and live in Cleveland, so I've seen him play. He's got mobility, arm strength and a whole helluva
Alot more pocket awareness than grad and Landry combined. Wasn't Ben a rookie back-up behind the veteran???

Shaw doesn't have 1/10th the talent Ben does. And Ben technically never filled a back up role, he started his first season. I think he rode the bench all of 1 game.

He saw action week 1 didnt he? When Maddox went down? Hence the 15-1 record that year.

He didn't start till week three. Ben went 14-0. He came in the second game when we got trounced by the rats.

Yes we need a 3rd stringer and we will have him on the roster already if we cut Landry. His name is Heath Miller. LOL. I honestly just wish that we could get a really good backup to Ben but I really think we probably have to have 3 because our line is just so unreliable. Also I think it's not really accurate to think that Ben was ever "just a backup" because he was clearly drafted to be the franchise going forward. Grad and Landry are a lot of things but NEITHER are THAT. I would like to have a guy like Matt Hasslebeck but I'd say he's worth too much money than what we can afford. David Garrard is out there too.
