The first day with pads on he really impressed the coaches. I don't know how this hasn't been tqlked about but he flattened Shazier in blocking drills and it didn't go unnoticed by coach Tomlin. This guy seems like a prototypical Steelers TE. He absolutely has the measurables though his college stats don't show it. He wasn't invited to the combine but would have posted the second fastest 40 for TEs with a 4.58. Missouri was a run first team he was really just asked to block. He could absolutely be our third TE this season or could force the Steelers to carry 4.

I haven't seen this guy play at all so I'm just going by things I have read and heard but one of those things is that he is freakishly athletic, I got the impression he was more in the mold of the new age TE's.

Nah he is a blocking machine. He even said I guess its good that they used me as a blocking TE as there are very few anymore who do or something like that. He is an athletic freak though.

Does that mean he can catch and run routes or just athletic in the sense of being able to block anything? Is he more Heath or more Spaeth?

Its hard to say as Missouri ran most of the time but according to him he can catch and run great routes but wasn't asked to do so. He has all the intangibles and the attitude so we will see. I can't findany highlight videos and the one I did find was mostly him blocking.

From what i've read/heard he's basically a blocking TE. I haven't gotten the sense that he's much of a receiving TE at all. Probably because he simply wasn't ask to be.

So, if he's as good as we are led to believe, would the team dump Speath and keep Waters and one of Branchflower/Paulson?

That would be a good move, I don't see what either of them brings to the team.

It never ceases to amaze me how many steeler fans ignore what we have in spaeth. The guy is an outstanding blocking te. It's no coincidence that our running game improved significantly when he returned , but half of steeler nation wants to cut him.

What's funny is, I actually like Spaeth. I know he has turned into a very capable blocker. I'm just wondering what the front office will do with so many TE's and so few spots available. If it were up to me, I'd also find a way to work Spaeth into the offense. I know he's primarily a blocker, but I think his drops are made out to be more than they are, and he's a monster target.

I think I read Ben has been targeting Spaeth in camp.

Waters is going to have to continue to be solid as a blocker, prove he can play specials, and show that he CAN catch when given an opportunity. His problem will be that he is going to have Kay throwing him the ball probably and who knows what they will look like.

Package him, Heath, Bryant and JB in the endzone, someone is bound to catch it!
