Needless to say this isn't going to stay but it's fun to do. I started with... "Locks".. those who WILL make the roster ( IMO ) then filled the existing spots with who I think would best serve this team.... Camp performances and injuries may change this and of course I left off James Harrison & Da Beard because they aren't under contract but honestly, there is room for both and would be valuable members so I'd love to see both re-signed... Here goes nothing!!!

    Offense 23

    -QB: Big Ben--- Bruce Gradkowski
comment: I left off Landry because he's inaccurate and weak armed... bad draft choice and just eats up a roster spot. There's a trend moving to 2 QB's.

-RB: LeVeon Bell--- LaGarrett Blount--- Tauren Poole
comment: workhorses Bell & Blount.. Poole is a perfect fit for the OZBS so he gets the nod.

-FB/TE: Will Johnson-- nuff said, he has great hands and needs more looks.

-TE: Heath Miller--- Matt Spaeth-- Rob Blanchflower
comment: Paulson & Palmer has had their chance and failed...for now

-WR: AB-- Lance Moore-- Marcus Wheaton-- Justin Brown-- Martavis Bryant
comment: JB replaces Moye..don't want or need stone hands Bey.

-OL: Beachum-Foster-Pouncey-DD-Gilbert.. Cody Wallace, Mike Adams, Guy Whimper, Wesley Johnson
comments: Whimper actually played ok in relief last year and is position flexible. Johnson is Munchaks project who's also position flexible

    Defense 26

-DL: Heyward-McLendon-Tuitt--- Cam Thomas, Hebron Fangupo, Brian Arnfelt, Josh Mauro,--- Mauro will surprise people, Arnfelt continues to improve and if we Resign DaBeard Fangupo gets cut.

-OLB: JJ-Worilds--- Arthur Moats, Vic So'oto, Chris Carter
comments: This position scares me. Right now James Harrison is better than all except maybe Worilds. I hate we signed Moats, So'oto will surprise people. If we resign JH Carter gets cut.

-ILB: Timmons- Shazier-- Spence-- Vince Williams-- Jordan Zumwalt
comments: Praying for Spence...really looking forward to seeing him play. Zumwalt is a football player and replaces Garvin. A few more muscle pounds and he may move to OLB.

    -CB: Allen-Gay-Taylor---Shauquille Richardson
    comments: Shaq is Lakes project

    -Safety: Troy-Mike Mitchell--Will Allen--Shamarko Thomas-- Robert Golden
comments: Allen is solid backup S and Shark & Golden are solid ST & CB able.

    Special Teams 4

LS: Greg Warren: don't see him getting beat out this year.
    -K: Shaun Suisham:
    -P: Adam Podlesh:
KR: Dri Archer: He may be listed as a WR/RB and may get a few snaps there too but his main job will be KR

    edit: I forgot PS

1- QB Brendon Kay, unless Landry outperforms him.
2- RB Alvester Alexander: always keep a RB on the PS
3-OG/C David Snow: almost went with simmons here
    4-TE Eric Waters:
5- WR CJ Goodwin: I really like this kid-high character
6-OLB Howard Jones: Porter's Project, needs more muscle
7- NT Daniel McCullers: man that big needs time to improve
    8- CB Devin Smith

There it is... Let me know how you feel...please be kind.

That 3rd TE spot could be one of the most underrated camp battles there is. I'll be very interested to see if it's a competition that deserves to stay under the radar, or if Palmer and Blanchflower show us something. The other FA moves suggest that WR is now where the coaching staff see the weapons sitting, though.

I tend to agree with BFs appraisal of your 53, Cajun. I think we keep Archer as an RB, but then I don't know much about this Poole fella.

Who is our KR? We have to NOT use AB there. In Archers comments I said he'd get some snaps at RB but honestly we have to give the vast amount of all rushes to Le-Le!!! Poole was drafted by the Panthers and they had a couple of dynamic runners, he hurt his ribs and was released injuryed. He's 5'10" 210lbs with a 4.54 40yd and put up 24 reps on the bench. He's best when allowed to run and pick his hole and that fits the OZBS.

I don't know much about TE Rob but Palmer and Paulson just haven't done much. Now if Paulson shows he has drastically improved his blocking he'll be the 3rd TE.B

Blast: I too doubt we keep only 2 QB on the 53 but I'd thought I'd make a roster that way to see how it works. I actually like it. Landry is a disappointment, he just isn't NFL caliber and keeping him due to his 4th draft status is stupid. I also think QB Kay is going to impress. RDE is a concern, we really need to bring back Keisel and have a rotation there. Ben was at Camp wearing a 99 jersey..... supporting DaBeard!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would be extremely premature to give up after one season that was based on what? Preseason? That's lunacy. I hated the pick but now that he's here, give him a chance. There is no justification for coming to the conclusion that he isn't an NFL caliber QB, you might be right but that is pure speculation at this juncture.

You're right.... But this 53 prediction is based on what I've so far and Landry has been quite inaccurate. As I said, camp will change things, hopefully Landry can convince me to keep him.

That's 83 guys so I suppose there are about 7 guys fighting for the ST jobs. Here is what ourlads.com looks like.

I didn't check this against the official steelers.com roster but think it is pretty accurate. btw: On their numeric and alpha roster they have a lot of players listed as CFA's. What is that?? Anyway, I'm looking forward to all the in depth discussions on all these position battles. Oh! Also. Tomlin said Mitchell and Alvester were on the PUP list. What is this RES and NFI stuff. This site has their own language or something? CF SF ???? wtf???

Looking at the depth chart gives me some ideas. What is the level of competition facing last years starters. For example Ramon Foster. A real fine guard. Here is what he has listed behind him and how they look on paper.

The preceding post had the combine and/or pro-day results of all 7 of the new OL players. It didn't post. Oh well there is some good competition there and for sure a couple of them will make the team. There are only 8 returning vets.

Good 53 Cajun. I agree with most of it, and even the parts where I disagree, I'm basically just guessing on gut instinct myself.

Except the Landry thing. You're saying he doesn't belong in the NFL and he's a bust, but what are you basing that on? College tape? When he was drafted, some experts called him a reach, others said he was a steal. Most (like me) had no problem with his spot in the draft, but were confused that the Steelers were the team that took him. As a 4th round rookie, he had some good and bad moments in the preseason. He did not look ready to play in a real game by a long shot.

But HOW does that make him a bust and not even worth being on the team? Landry didn't play as badly as Kelvin Beachum did during his first preseason, and look at him now. Playing badly at first is expected for most 4th round quarterbacks. Hell, even most 1st round quarterbacks. If we based everything on performance and never factored in draft status, we wouldn't have Lawrence Timmons or Cortez Allen. We'd have lost Keenan Lewis before he gave us two good seasons and a comp pick (Wesley Johnson). Hell, we did throw draft status out the window with Kraig Urbik, and - surprise surprise - he improved over time and became a solid starter in Buffalo. It happens.

Maybe Landry will be a complete bust. In fact, if I had to guess, that's what I'd go with. The fact that his rookie contract will likely be up before he sees the field is a huge blow, but we knew that when we drafted him. They took him because they saw great value in him, and they said so. They were among the experts that ranked him much higher than the 4th. Maybe he'll somehow magically work out and we'll get some kind of trade. Maybe he'll improve and be the top backup next year and play well and help us win a few games while Ben's on the bench. Or maybe he'll float around as #2/#3 and then sign elsewhere and we won't even get a comp pick. But in any of those scenarios, it's too early to call him a bust right now. He hasn't even had a chance.

Here's my thing on Landry. He was in a shot gun offense in college. His own words the passing windows in college are a lot bigger in college than the pros. He's a high character guy and had success in college. I can deal with the interceptions if caused by misreads or miscommunication with the receiver because that can be fixed with coaching & reps. I'm not convinced he has an NFL arm, but that can be overcame by play calling--- Joe Montana had a less than desired arm but he had the right system AND was extremely accurate. Landry is, in my opinion, an inaccurate passer. Not being accurate is the hardest thing to improve on and one of the most important skills of a QB.

I'm probably too harsh on him right now and honestly I hope he proves me wrong. As far as
having only 2 QB's on the 53 roster that isn't going to happen, but for me I'm liking it for now. If we cut him or Kay on final cut down day whoever grabs him must put him on their 53 which I don't see happening. We can keep him on the PS, developing and getting better and if an injury occurs move him to the 53 then.

Way too early to guess but if it were me...... I'd get Dri 10 snaps a game. Two snaps @ WR in the slot mismatched against their 3rd corner. The other 8 in the backfield a couple play action passes, a few handoffs to see if he can hit the hole and a couple in say the 21 personnel then split him out into the slot forcing the defense to cover him with a safety or LB. I do want him with all PR and KR.

In the college tape I watched, I thought he was extremely accurate in the short-mid range. He did a lot of very quick throws on bubble screens and outs, and for a lot of those, the goal wasn't just to get the guy the ball (which even I could do), but to hit him in perfect stride to make it like an extended running play. I thought he was very good at that. I think once we're talking about the ball going 10+ yards downfield, his accuracy drops big time. That's a big problem and it's why I'm not trying to make any kind of prediction about him. But he was drafted where he was for a reason. If we didn't take him, he probably would have gone within a few picks anyway. He has a lot of things going for him. And since we're likely to keep 3 QBs, and since it's not like that spot is going to anyone else (I seriously doubt Kay outperforms him), we might as well give him every possible chance.

I'm predicting he'll have another mixed bag preseason, probably a little better than last year's. We'll keep him, and next year will be the big test. By then, he should be flat out dominating back-ups in preseason games, and if he's not, that's trouble.

I wasn't as against at drafting him as others. His college tape looked good so if we could develop him & by the end of his 5 yr rookie contract he should be our solid #2 pushing Ben and into his 2nd contract replace Ben......

Accuracy in the NFL is Key and his struggles is a concern. In the reports I've read his accuracy issues are continuing in camp this year----- This scares me, if he has another preseason like last yr then no way he makes the 53 and we go Kay on the PS.

Again, I hope he proves me wrong.

What makes you think Kay is anything more than a camp arm? And if Landry's so bad that he has no chance of making our 53 (a team with an oft-injured starter and a lousy-mediocre #2), do you think he wouldn't make it to our PS? And his rookie contract is 4 years.

I don't think the issue of accuracy is unwarranted, but I do caution, there may be other factors here.

How many snaps has he had with ANY of the guys he is throwing the ball to? None of the top 7....A. Brown, Wheaton, Bryant, J. Brown, Moye, DHB, or Moore were focused on getting on the same page with him, they want to be on the same page with Ben.

That leaves Danny Coale, CJ Goodwin, Kashif Moore, and Lanear Simpson. Not to say that their is no talent there only that accuracy is often about timing. Let's be careful not to read too much into things. I want to know he throws the ball to the right place, reads the D accurately, and throws the ball with some zip when needed and touch when needed. Accuracy and Arm strength are 2 factors that overlap, but they both impact timing. Sometimes it just takes some time. I am willing to be patient.

I will say this, I saw him talk to Gruden, and I think mentally once he knows the offense he will be fine that way. The timing things are what we don't know, but are hard to look at with guys he has hardly thrown to.

I don't think grad has been lighting up camp either. we need ben connecting with these guys right now, not grad or landry. they will be fine as they move along. I don't want to see them on the field in their contracts anyway.

I have faith in randy fitchner to bring the kid along. they liked that short and intermediate game he was so good at. it's what we want to do here with the talent we have. his completion percentage showed it and so did yardage and TD's. the only bad part of his game is the interceptions.

as gruden says, they are not always a bad thing. they mean he's not holding back on plays. I think he'll be well worth a 4th rounder by the time he leaves.

While I agree with your use of him in ST,
I am not so sure he will ever see 10 touches
a game, just too many other weapons that
need to see the ball. Of course just my opinion.

10 snaps is not necessarily 10 touches.

But if he's KR and PR, that could be half a dozen touches right there, not even counting offense.

I say probably around 6 plays go his way, 4 running and 2 pass plays. According to his college coach, he did all his damage as a RB.

True, but I wouldn't be surprised to see us flip the script, or at least try to. You know what our RBs usually have to go through. It's not exactly as roomy as Kent St. Getting him the ball in space is what will make him successful and durable.

That's not to say I wouldn't give him any traditional running plays. But I'd try to be REALLY careful about it.

Half will come on Haley's patented 3rd and long draw play.

With the ZBS I think our oline will be dominant in the run game and all this kid needs is a.crease amd he is gone.

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm not trying to sound smug; I mean that in the nicest way possible. It's just that, our OL is always supposed to become dominant, and it always disappoints. This year could certainly be different, but even so, things could go wrong. One or two injuries and Munchak's job will be not so much to forge a dominant line as it will be to save the season from complete disaster.

As for Archer, let's wait for that OL to be dominant before making him a regular in the backfield.
