Good read on the option and thanks.
I think they'll exercise the option and that will give them a little breathing room to work on a favorable extension. Bypassing the option could save them a few mil but that would entail bypassing the agent, no small feat.

They'll want to wrap him up for years

I don't care what it takes we must keep him in Pittsburgh. This dude embodies everything we used to be on defense. He's big and nasty and plays the general that way.

Thanks to our coaching staff, we're once again left with having to make a big money decision on a player before we see if he can deliver sustained production. I don't see how we have any choice. $7m is a lot of money, but it's $4m cheaper than the franchise tag number. Bite the bullet and pick up the option.

Khan's the money/contract guy and reputably fairly decent is he not?

It's not just our coaching staff. Lots of teams have these situations come up. Particularly teams that are paying QB's big money....

Agreed. Heyward has been producing since day one, when he's been on the field. What we needed to see last season was that he could perform consistently as a starter. He could.

We don't pay our QB big money. That is a nonsense excuse anyway. The problem isn't paying for production, the problem is overpaying for production, and in some cases paying for little or no production at all.

Yes we do, we also had a SB roster not too long ago with quite a few star players. You want a ton of cap space, you get the Browns.

Yeah just read that too. Still don't get why it would it not be in the org's best interest to try to get a long-term deal done now? Did they even try? Seems like we would be in a better bargaining position this year than if we were to wait until next year. Now that the option has been signed, hayward and his agent are in control of the conversation now...

Apparently this report was incorrect. A NFL reporter misspoke.

I think it was a good move. The money does not become guaranteed for anything other than injury until the start of the 2015 league year. If he's cut anytime before then, we owe him nothing for 2015. To me, this puts the leverage a bit more in favor of the team than the player, and in this case I think it helps, rather than harms, the negotiation. I think both sides have the incentive to work a long-term deal in 2015, but the player has more incentive to cut a deal now. Hopefully we see something happen when Woodley's salary rolls off the books on June 1.
