Ranked 32nd in Average and 28th in Net Average among Punters with at least 50 punts last season.

    WTF?

Another mediocre punter keeping the tradition alive. Was Josh Miller really our last "good" punter?

Another body for the all out war that is our starting punter competition haha I hope Brad Wing has his head on straight, because I think he has the best upside of the (very mediocre) bunch

no spodoloinewskiesan was I know it is not spelled or even sounds right, the guy from Baylor. He was only good for 1 year. Is Roy Gerella really too old to punt?

Was Drew Butler really that bad?

He never lost a game for us... Isn't that all you really could want?

Coincidentally, Butler was signed by the Bears back in January.

Just let Ben punt. Fake it 50 percent of the time. Gooddell would have to change the roughing the punter rule though.

They maybe should use one of their compensatory picks and draft a competent punter.

In all seriousness the punter and field goal kicker have become a safety net for under performing offenses. IF they don't have a punter it will force the offense to be better since there will be no fourth and long punt. No field goal kicker means no stalled drives where they settle for a 30 yard field goals. They are a crutch that are eating up Ben's productive franchise QB years, no money should be wasted on them and in no way should they waste three whole spots on the 53 on situational players who play less than 2% of all snaps

While I have no interest in defending the move - a punter is a punter, really, and when we did have a guy with a strong leg (Sepulveda) he routinely outkicked the coverage - I am generally suspicious of relying too heavily on stats for what is a fundamentally situational position. The optimal distance for the ball to travel is heavily dependent on what the ST unit is trying to achieve.

I have no idea what this guys situational effectiveness is, mind. Just saying that stats are wholly unreliable for this position.

I actually really like this signing.

He had an off year last year, but was actually a very good punter for quite a while. He's also the reason why the Steelers were forced to trade up to grab Daniel Sepulveda. Pittsburgh desperately wanted a punter, and because the Jags took Podlesh earlier than expected, the Steelers were desperate to move up and grab the other top Punter.

Other than Sepulveda (when healthy), Podlesh is the most talented punter we have seen in a Steelers uniform going back a long way.

I think Wing from LSU is a good signing also. He has a tremendous leg and not sure what happened once he graduated from LSU but he was a difference maker in terms of changing field position the times that LSU had to punt.

    Competition is always good!

can he kick it high when we want it and long when we want it has been the problem. consistency.

we all laughed when we won a superbowl with a guy we are no longer allowed to mention around here, but one thing was for sure we had better coverage that year than most. we knew he would kick it short and we could cover. butler would kick it long or short and we never knew where to cover to. the other two couldn't kick it long when needed or short when needed. the short consistant guy helped coverage. I like these two we have in here now. who's the most consistant will be the question.
