It stops as a tie or you keep playing is if it's a playoff game. It's very rare to get that far in the playoffs.

The only way this gets put to bed is each team gets the ball at least once no matter what. I promise the complaints will go away.

 

Why not just play an entire QTR? 15 minutes. No Sudden Death.

 

You can still stop them from scoring a TD, and then You get the ball.
Maybe people should put more importance on their D .

 

By the time OT rolls around, some teams look so deflated.

 

I'm old school. Win the coin flip and score. Lose it and have your defense stand up. Best side wins.

I would be ok with changing to one guaranteed possession for playoff games only. We suck at coin tosses. Good change for us just in case we find a way to compete.

 

Put it back the way it was, First team to score wins, im so sick of the we didnt get a chance crowd...... BS do your job on defense, and you will have your chance!!

 

Tomlin cant coach during the first 60 minutes much less any additional time, no wonder he’s opposed to extended overtime.

 

Yes, and then they play 60 full minutes with multiple possession changes and turnovers. And in the second half the opposite team starts with the ball. The game will never end immediately on the first possession like OT.

 

But, it doesn't. Not anymore. If you want to win in OT, your defense needs to STOP the other team! The coin toss doesn't win in OT, lack of defense/special teams lets the other guys win.

 

Decide it like the other football does. Penalty kicks! Or, in this case, field goals!

 

I'll go the other way.

I'm for the coin flip just being the winner. No OT... get the analytics people on what the best stragety is for the flip

Obviously I'm joking, but not completely.

Imagine the last 5 minutes of gamea.. you would see trans playing too win. No more take the 3.. no more kick the extra point to tie... no more trying to just drain the clock with a 3 point lead

Games like LIONS/CHIEFS. The lions could be perfectly content to let the coin decide. As it is their best chance to win. Where as the Chiefs would be doing everything in their power to make sure they win outright and keep just a coin from deciding their fate.

As silly as it sounds it would completely eliminate the TIE and could really result in interesting 4th quarter decisions

I'm not sure I'm on board with this, but I have 2 say ....It does sound interesting.

 

Playing a extra quarter means we just went from 4 hour game to a 4.5+ game.

 

but lets institute rules that help the defense against these high powered offenses.....when you can move the ball from your own 35 with less than 40 seconds to score a touchdown.....the defense needs help....

The new rule for Overtime in playoffs games is a good one. The NFL has neutered good defense by rules that you cant hit a WR hard or even breathe on a QB or get a 15 yard penalty that its like easy 7 on 7 for great QBs these days. Reason Brady can play till he is 70 with new rules. He would not be around if he took all the hits the previous generation of QBS took like Troy Aikman. Now the real question for coaches is whether to go for one or two if your the second team that score a td in overtime.

 

we made it to the playoffs in 21 and will do so again this year.
