    Pats trade for Talib

I'm surprise there hasn't been a topic about this yet. They traded a fourth round pick for him and a seventh round pick.

When I hear people refer to Bill Bellicik as a "genius" I roll my eyes. I think it's easy to look like Lombardi when you have (who I consider) the best QB of all time. I also think some of the moves he makes are stupid moves that he does out of arrogance... Like trading away picks for future picks every year when your defense has huge holes.

I believe if BB didn't trade away all those picks and used them on some pass rushers/CB's the Pats would have at least 1 more ring.

HOWEVER, what this thread is really about is what I love about BB. The dude is not afraid to make a move that's against the conventional "NFL way." Five years ago we had the best run defense year after year and would kill teams and put them in 3rd and long situations because there was some stupid unwritten rule that you couldn't abandon the running game. BB played us and said we can't run on them so we're going to throw it 50 times (which everyone does now), and dominated us every time we played.

He's also not afraid to make moves that will improve his team, even if it may "tarnish their image." If I see someone say a player "isn't steelers material" one more time in a post I'm going to snap. BB traded for Talib who by all accounts is an off the field nightmare... but BB knows that he has a strong veteran presence in his locker room. Talib doesn't have much of a contract left, so if he screws up he's gone at no real loss (other than the 4th rounder they gave up). He filled a HUGE hole on their roster with a guy that's capable of playing at a pro bowl level.

Living in Cincinnati I saw plenty of Corey Dillon, who was seen as a locker room cancer here. Never heard a peep out of him in New England.

I'm not saying it always works. He's had Ochocinco and Kellen Winslow who were failures... But they still never blew up the way they had on previous teams. They quietly released them with no consequence.

All of this is partly b/c I'm still salty we didn't grab Vontaze Burfict, and was mocked *over-dramatic* on these boards for wanting him...

I'm SteelByDesign and I support this message.

It looks like one of BB's patented low risk move. He acts up and they can his ass for the cost of a bottom 4'th minus a top 7'th. If he and/or his agent decide that this is his opportunity to refurbish his image to see if someone is foolish enough to give him a long term contract next year then his upside is enormous. BB isn't afraid to do something that might not work out if the upside/downside is right.

The best QB of all time? Not sure I'm on that page SBD. How do you come to that conclusion?

Conversation for a different post. I intentionally put "who I consider" in there.

Haynesworth was also one of his picks that didn't pan out. But as far as is he a genius. Oh yes he is. (SBD ROLLS EYES! LOL) But I would have to say that I also consider Brady the best ever as well but my love for him is well known on this board. The reason I would say it is because he's made pro bowlers out of dudes noone else wanted. Branch was Super Bowl MVP and then BB let him go and he didn't do diddley in Seattle. Wes Welker was cut by two teams and ONE of them traded WITHIN their division to get rid of him and Brady makes him look like a Hall of Famer. Randy Moss was written off and Brady throws him the most TD's in a single season EVER. Brady was taken like 199th in the draft or something crazy and the dude goes to 5 Super Bowls and wins 3 out of 4. His playoff record at one point was 14-2! Good grief that's like a video game or something! Only Bart Starr was better as far as his percentage but he didn't have the same amount of wins. As a child of the 80s though it's really hard for me to put anyone above Joe Montana who is also Brady's hero incidentally. But who would you say is the greatest Vegas? I mean Brady missed an entire season and it's still conceivable that might STILL get the record for most td passes ever. Also Drew Brees had better hope that he keeps throwing his td streak because Brady is only like 9 games behind him. I don't think I've made a good case for Brady. I think he has made it for himself. But I would like to hear what you have to say about that though. I don't mind people disagreeing with me. I'm 5 feet 4 inches so I suppose that makes me a big boy??? So I should be able to take it. LOL.

I can see a lot of people feeling that way. The reason I don't hold it against what Brady has done since is because they confiscated the video stuff in week one of the 07 season. Then Brady went on to have probably the greatest season of all time and you KNOW they weren't doing that then. I don't even understand what BB thought he would gain from that. I mean a qb walks up to the line and reads the d before the snap. I just don't understand what they would stand to gain from it. I also wonder what Brady knew as far as that stuff too. I mean was it just a coaching thing or did even the players know about it? I think it must go on quite a bit throughout the league because you always see coaches and coordinators covering their mouths to call plays. Also if they were calling in signals from the sidelines wouldn't that mean Brady would've had to watch the sidelines instead of just reading the d? Them doing that is one of the dumbest things anyone has ever done.

Again, I didn't make this post to debate Brady. I made it to make a point that I wish we would take a risk once in a while.

You mentioned Haynesworth, and you're right he was another failed BB experiment, but once again it really didn't cost them much.

Also as much as he picks up guys nobody wants he also let's go people you would think a lot of people would want but they hardly ever pan out to be anything great after he lets them go though ya know? Randy Moss is the best example of that. Randy Moss is another. Green-Ellis is to be determined at this point. Richard Seymour is another one. Regardless of what people say about him he has an eye for talent or the lack thereof. Someday though I would like to hear your evaluation of Brady.
