I mean, the top paid safety is Adams at 17.5 a year? We are probably looking in that range for Minkah. We will still have a lot of cap.

If they're willing to throw away $30 to $40mil per year on an injury prone , washed up QB as in Ben, then what took them so long on a guy who hasn't even peaked yet?

The deal is 5 years. They tear up this years 5th year option contract.

So, If you include this years 10million it is actually 5 years for $122 million. OR 24.4 per year.

The Steelers way of dealing with contracts. Many people have an issue with it. I personally do not as the NFL PA needs to REMOVE their heads out of their jack seats in terms of negotiations.

Until they do, incidents like these will continue to occur.

At any rate, deal is done!!!

    I have been saying this for weeks now; a deal will get done. The length of time will be the deciding factor. More importantly though is one major takeaway from these negotiations as a whole;

The Rooney's are changing but they will do so when the opportunity is beneficial for them to ensure that their ability to compete and stay competitive are not compromised. Otherwise, they will place their values and traditions first and foremost. This lame duck narrative that the Rooney's are too old fashioned have not payed attention to what the Rooney's have been doing since 2019; the ultimate form of hypocrisy given today's Sports Media's obsession's of having a severe case of Recency Bias.

    Doubt it.

Steelers will have some money to use in 2022; Watt deal or otherwise. Minkah will likely get done next but more than likely much earlier this time around.

I was seriously starting to worry reading the last few days people on the board. Quite possibly the best OLB they have had since the days of Lloyd and Greene and people were saying not worth it. Pay the man he is worth it.

The only reason people are stating that he is not worth is due to the high volume of pressure and sacks Keith Butler has managed to obtain from 2015 to present. Much of this same ideology was present when people thought the Steelers would be fine post Rod Woodson due to how effective Dick LeBeau was coaching the secondary at the time. Well... all I can say is yikes!

1997 to 2002 were some of the worst seasons Steelers Defensive Backs have ever had; Dick LeBeau or not. However, Pittsburgh would end up righting this wrong in 2003; the man in my avatar to be Woodson's successor. More importantly though, the Rooney's learned a valuable lesson; NEVER let HOF Talents walk in their prime. Similar sentiments were echoed as many feared Troy's deal would not get done in 2007 ..... until it did at the 11th hour as the Rooney's were not going to make the same mistake twice as they had with Woodson earlier.

This brings us to T.J. Watt. No doubt I also believe that Alex Highsmith will become a very good, if not great pass rusher... in time. The Rooney's are not going to use the luxury of time to find another T.J. Watt as there is no T.J. Watt currently in the upcoming class to classes. Never mind the search as that is not even the biggest reason they were not going to let T.J. walk.

T.J. Watt was not going anywhere due to one of historical importance for the Steelers; assuming this is Big Ben's last season, setting up the next QB with the best possible situation possible is paramount. Not doing so is what often leads to QBs like Ryan Leaf, Vince Young, Andrew Luck, Josh Rosen and possibly Joe Burrow. Thankfully for that next heir apparent to Big Ben, the Rooney's have been doing this for over half a Century and have been the NFL's best at it. Once Big Ben moves on, that successor will enjoy the same level of support as Big Ben did when he came into the league; top flight defense with a rock solid ground attack.

Glad it's over with. They don't need this as an ongoing distraction. I hope his performance is commensurate with his compensation. There's no doubt in my mind the will and the effort will be there.

Everyone here loves TJ. Many just thought [assumed] that his agent was asking for too much. Sounds like TJ agreed.

I'm glad He got his deal done. Now I don't have 2 Burn my Watt jersey, but if it makes his cap hit(which I don't know yet) go 2 a 15, or more% of the cap then ....not just him, but nobody that can be schemed out of a game ,or that doesn't touch the ball every time on their side of the ball deserves 2 take that much Cap space. So...just glad it's done.

The thing about it is if they didn't extend him with a deal then no point trying to get Minkah locked in either since paying huge money for a ball hawking safety with no pass rush in front of him is a waste. So they'd be sitting there with like 120 million in cap space and average players that would be full blown tear down and rebuild.

If he stays remotely healthy he'll easily be the Steelers all time sack leader by the end of this deal. I was never really worried about this getting done. He's too good to let leave in his prime.

Minkah also said via social media that he was watching what happened with TJ. If the Steelers weren't willing to give Watt what he is worth then they there isn't anyone they'd be willing to do it with.

Steelers Depot is reporting that the deal includes a $35 million signing bonus, and fully guaranteed salaries of $1 million in ‘21, $24 million in ‘22 and $20 million in ‘23. Cap hit for ‘21 drops to $8 million. No idea if that’s all correct.

So a 2 million savings against this season's cap. That gives them a lot of wiggle room doesn't it?
