I am having trouble thinking of many winning touchdowns by Hines Ward. All that comes to mind is 2008 in Jacksonville, down 20-21, on the first play after the two-minute warning.

Only three players in league history have had game-winners like Santonio Holmes (Burress 2007, Taylor 1988), but was Ward's only winning play with 1:55 left in a game we trailed only by a point?

    How I define a game-winning TD:

    1. We must be winning after the PAT.
    2. We must win the game.
    3. We must lead for the remainder of the game.
    4. The score has to come with 2:00 or less remaining (or in overtime) at the conclusion of the play (not necessarily at the beginning).
    5. The game could have been tied when the score happened, but leading the game and merely sealing the victory does not count.
    6. The points that take the lead can come on the PAT (even if it is a two-point conversion, though I cannot remember us scoring a 2-point conversion in that situation).
    7. The play must result in a touchdown, not just a big play to set up a field goal.
    8. If we score additional points as the opponent tries to answer, so be it (so if we go pick-six as they drive for the tie, that's fine).

Those rules might make it sound complicated but, aside from the requirement about being within the last two minutes of regulation (or OT), I think most of us would define a game-winning play this way. I use these rules to exclude plays in games we lost, as clutch as they seemed at the time.

I will always consider the picture to the left of this post as being a game winning score even though there was still nearly 9 minutes left of game time to be played. It was the last points scored of SB XL.

#2 made me laugh. Obviously you can't have a game winning TD if you don't win the game.

Not sure I agree with your assessment of a game winning TD. To me if the Steelers win 7-0 and that TD was scored on the opening drive of the game then that is the game winning TD. Years ago the Steelers beat the Pats in a playoff game (true story:)) 7-6. I think we scored early and held on for dear life. I'm sure there are a ton of examples of the game winning TD's being scored early in the game. A great defense is needed for those games.

That was the week before the Steelers lost to Denver in the 1997 AFCC Game. Kordell ran in a long TD early, Vrabel saved it with a late sack, I believe.

In hockey, soccer, baseball and many other sports it could be a 1-0 final and the winning scores could come in the first minutes or even seconds of a game or first inning and they are considered as the winning points. I fail to see how anyone would believe any different when it comes to a particular player.
