They're not trading Nelson for Ertz...The reason they're getting rid of Nelson is because" THEY HAVE NO MONEY !!!!!!" ...If they get any kind of draft compensation, That's a plus .... THEY'RE NOT gonna rid themselves of Nelson's salary, then ADD ERTZ salary...Then they would just keep Nelson!!!!!! Some of y'all fantasyland Dudes, crack me up!

That also isn't accurate. Hilton was not a starter in the base defense. If you want to count him as a starter, you really need to do your calculations with 12 defensive starters. In that case, it would be five of 12 guys.

They still lost a lot, but let's be accurate here.

I think he has more input than he should, but no, I don't buy that he is overruling Colbert and Tomlin on personnel decisions.

I do believe it is at least possible that they promised to make every effort to keep Smith-Schuster as part of the negotiation that led to Roethlisberger taking a pay cut.

That said, the theory that signing Smith-Schuster led directly to losing Nelson has been pretty much debunked. Dupree, Hilton, and Alualu were going to be gone anyway. Williams was going to have to take a pay cut or go.

Agreed. Ertz's base salary is $8.5 million for 2021. The Eagles would also take a dead money salary cap hit. The deal makes no sense for either team.

When Rudolph was drafted it was proof that Big Dumb has no input on personnel and he pretty well said that at the time.

Love it if they could, but they don't have the cap room. Don't forget, they have to have cap room for the draft. Or, did I read that their cap room is calculated post draft? Any of you cap guru's know?

IDK if it is pre or post, but I believe each signed contract has to fit under the cap.

Hilton played most defensive snaps he’s not a starter when they play 3-4 but they play nickel a ton.

I hate to admit I’m confused by a menu, but when I went to their site I was.

Do you order Hot Geno’s and one of the 4 below it, or is Hot Geno’s a combination of all 4?

Exactly. Also Alualu is the only one I didn't really expect 2 lose.
People have been talking about who we lose Nelson, or Haden for months.

Again, it is fine to consider him a starter, but in that case, he would be one of 12, not one of 11.

Vince Williams and Mike Hilton cannot both be starters.

If you are using the 3-4 as the base, then Hilton is not on the field.

If you are using the 3-3-5 as the base then. Williams is not on the field.

edit: To add, the Steelers also like to run a 2-4-5 a lot, at which case Williams and Hilton were both on the field but Alulu was not.

You and Scribe are right it would be 5/12. Still a lot to replace in one year with no money to spend. Better crush the draft and have 3/4 guys contribute year 1. Oh and we still don’t have a RB yet and the OL is Dog ****.

Space under the cap can be calculated as soon as the league announces the limit, typically a couple of weeks before the start of the league year. Teams then have to be compliant by that date, which is when free agency officially begins. It's then monitored throughout the rest of the team offseason as new contracts are signed/restructured/extended.

As far as the draft is concerned, the Steelers rookie pool for this year is about $8.5m. Only the top 51 contracts count against the cap during the offseason though, so they don't necessarily have to be $8.5m under it to sign all of their draftees. E.g., the contract value of their first round pick will bump #51 off the ledger - the difference in value between the two is what is needed to remain compliant. If that makes sense.
