Yet, we are the 2020 AFCN Division Champions. What good did those mobile QBs do for their teams when we still came in at the top and had all of those other issues with the offense, i.e. no run game?

thanks, this makes sense. But you didn’t mention the $22m hit this year from the past signing bonus, etc. Does that mean that this amount is ‘unrestructurable? That they’ll take that hit regardless of what happens and they can’t kick any portion of that into later years?

You’re correct. That $22m is from previous bonuses and a restructure in 2020, its a sunk cost now, and will be on the 2021 cap sheet no matter what move they make

Was just coming to post about this, just heard that the lowest they could get his cap hit is around 23 million, even if he takes a pay cut.

So my question is, whether he comes back or not, is the cap hit still 22-23 million no matter what?

You’re exactly right Blast, $22m is the baseline. That is money he has already been paid via the signing bonus in 2018 for his last contract and the restructure last year. It’s locked in, can’t be changed.

If he plays for the vet minimum in 2021 his hit would be around $23m - $24m, fine in theory but I don’t think it’s practical to ask him to do that.

Most likely outcome is the one Kaboly floated, two year extension with restructure and a ballpark $29m cap charge in 2021. Assuming he retires at the end of the season there would then be a dead cap overhang of around $12m in 2022 depending on how they rework the contract.

That changes everything, then. I wasn’t fully understanding the situation. Thanks.

No worries. I think we just have to forget about the $22m, it’s a sunk cost now. The only thing that matters is how they manage the $19m bonus / salary he is owed. I don’t think they will do anything until the final salary cap number is known. Maybe the league does them a favour.

That's correct. The $22 million hits our 2021 cap no matter what.

According to Sportrac, $29m will be a top 10 cap hit for players in the NFL. Even with significant restructure, Ben is still a huge cap hit.

Have no idea where this thread has gone but to reiterate I disagree with the current get rid of Ben talk and bashing him in the so called national media. Some people are “ last word” fools. I do understand some love him but feel the time has come. But I disagree.

I WOULD like to see him lose 20 LBS and add a great run game. The chance of drafting a 500 yard, 33 TD or more passer is almost nil. We have hm! I think he still has it and deserves at least a year, maybe two, with the addition of a great RB to prove it.

You’re really putting too much emphasis on 500 yards in a game they were trailing 28-0 and Cleveland D going into prevent.

In contrast, games from week 11-16:

    267 yards
    266 yards
    305 yards
    187 yards
    170 yards
    342 yards

    10 Int.

If Ben comes back and seems like he is, you are hoping it was an injury that made his play fall off a cliff. Otherwise, you can put just about anyone back there and give you those stats but at least they can still move, line up under center and throw deep.

Not necessarily injury alone, though reports of lingering knee, etc. issues late in the season could have some play depending on the severity.

The larger matter is with the workload balance. Ben can no longer carry the offense himself. It would have been an accomplishment for any QB to function in the role that our offense required in the second half of the season. The question is whether you believe he still has the ability to make the reads and throws guiding a more functional, balanced attack better than Rudolph, et al.

Opinions will vary there (and to whether Canada can get the scheme and players in place this offseason to set it up).

My friend. How come you don't put this same emphasis on D. Watson?? Lot of his yards & Tds came when way down, & the other teams D changed . Does it only count when it's our Qb ?

Bens agent said , Bens contract will not be a problem for the Steelers.

They will work it out. The sticking points will be who the Steelers going to cut or keep? Pouncy, let AV walk , let Ju Ju walk etc.

Ben will meet with Tomlin and FO .To discuss players for next season.

I really don`t like Ben having this control .
