Troy Polamalu questions his own training

Saw this exchange on Ed Bouchette's chat today and thought it was interesting:

Scott: With the amount of injuries on the offensive line there has been much talk about conditioning and technique being a factor in those injuries which would theoretically come down to the coaching and training staff. Do you think conditioning/training is a valid theory for the cause of this?

Ed Bouchette: Not one bit when it comes to the line. Someone told me, however, that Troy Polamalu is questioning his own training, which as you probably know has been quite different from the other Steelers with his own trainer on the West Coast.

I have brought up Polamalu's off-season training regime on this board and theorized that it could be the reason that he seems to be bothered by these nagging injuries year after year. I realize the achilles injury was a tough one to get over but it seems like some of his injuries could simply be related to an insufficient training regimen, particularly as he gets older. There were many that disagreed and said that his style of play is what causes him to be oft injured, but now it appears that Troy himself has questions/concerns about his off-season training program. I wish Bouchette had provided a source for his remark but he is pretty close to the situation and is a credible resource.

I'm pretty sure Troy skipped his usual west coast training this year and joined the team at Tomlin's request.

Somebody else brought that up on this board but I don't recall that. It seems that he allows Troy to play by a different set of rules with regard to off-season training. Do you have a reference or a link which talks about Tomlin requesting that he participate in OTAs in Pittsburgh rather than on the west coast as in years past?

We'd all love to see him train with Ike and Tom Shaw and then go a season without injury. Maybe next year (sigh). However, hearing something 3rd or 4th hand from Ed Bouchette isn't all that convincing to start with.

I haven't found the link that it was at Tomlin's request yet; however, OTA"s are not mandatory so there's no different set of rules for TP.

Yeah, I remember reading about Troy being in camp this year, for the first time in a long time.
Mostly, because we had lost a couple veteran leaders on Defense, and it would help on that aspect.
Certainly didn`t seem to help his "conditioning".
    :(
I love Troy, but, I think I have to admit, he has finally pushed his body farther than it will go... :(

This season he's been hurt, which we know about. Last year he was still arguably the best safety in the game and played well all year. The year before that he was the best defensive player in the league, and even won an award that said so. Is that not enough production for you? Oh, I'm sorry, please give me a list of interception leaders. That determines how good a player is and how much they help your defense.

I seem to recall one year Troy stayed at Steelers facility for a "normal" training regimen and that is the year he missed the most time?

I think it is his style of play really and maybe his body is starting to fail him a bit.... I'd hate to see if he ever played LB, he might have only last 3 or 4 years in the league.

He just looks thicker and heavy to me. Everyone slows down with age , and I dont want to be racial, but pacific islanders do seem to be pretty heavy framed people.

Ike runs fine. It's both his awareness and his hands that concern me.
