The moments of brilliance followed by utter incompetence is what sinks this team, and makes them frustrating. Ben is the prime example. He has always been erratic - "Good Ben" and "Bad Ben" within seasons and within games. But aging makes the best of us more erratic and there will be fewer "Good Ben" games. He can sling it and throw ropes occasionally, making us think "Yea, he is back", but most are high or floaters. Without a running game, the offense is almost solely reliant on him, and his more bad than good is now the norm. Same for the O-line - old and more bad days than good days. The receiving core is young, contributing to inconsistent play (e.g., drops). And the offensive schemes are too vanilla - receivers are rarely wide open, requiring Ben to be highly accurate, which he no longer is. Being good at "combat catches" actually means you are not open, or the throw was poor.

The defense seems to be designed entirely on getting pressure up front, and when that doesn't happen, the secondary is poor. Too many wide open receivers. Up front it is dependent almost entirely on "Beat your man" one-on-one, which Watt can do, but if that doesn't happen, or the O-line is good or the QB quick, the secondary cannot hold up. So with pressure the D is stellar (#1 in many categories), but with no pressure they are terrible. That may be a combination of poor scheme, lack of talent due to injuries, or guessing wrong on the called defense.

The only consistent thing seems to be coaching, which is consistently poor. No creativity on either side of the ball - opponents can predict what is coming. Unless you call having your #1 pass rusher drop into coverage - I guess that could be called "creative". And what is coached is often head scratching. Game plans (if there are any) and in-game decisions are often bit weird. Not being able to figure out a run game is atrocious, especially for this franchise. If it is lack of talent, that is on the draft gurus.

Needed to do my end-of-season venting. Gonna be an interesting off-season.

There's a common denominator. But he always has an excuse.
