Lateral?

I don't know, I've looked at that play many times now and it looks perfectly sideways to me. At the very least it's not without question. It's definitely very, very close.

 

Look at Ben's release point, the moment the ball separates from his hand. That's what counts, not the rest of him. It's clearly outside the 21. Mendenhall catches it at or inside the 21.

 

I'm still not convinced. It appears to be a forward pass only because Mendenhall is already moving forward before he catches it, but it still appears to be perfectly sideways. You might be right, but I just don't see it.

 

It's worth noting that the camera angle isn't perfect, but it's still very good. To me it does look sideways when I watch the ball travel, and when I play it at regular speed. But when I freeze it or do slow motion at Ben's release point and at Rashard's catching point, I can see that the ball has advanced itself up the field. It was released on one side of the hash mark, and caught on the other.

 

Knew it. I've been saying all along it was a pass. :-D

 

i wonder if the Steelers asked for it to be looked at again. i cant imagine that the league looks at every play just to make adjustments to any thing that wasnt correct.

although maybe thats someones job.
