i remember last season a depleted steeler team go to baltimore and a certain rg3 laughing it up, taunting, acting bad..... isnt ironic that the shoe is on the other foot now. the whole irony of this is that he gets to start just like last season but now the depleted team is his own. HOPE WE SMASH HIM AND THE RATBIRDS!!!. but then again we all know how tomlin plays to the level of the oposition. thank you.

    A majority of the statements you made within your explanation I agree with. However, the last statement is incorrect. Why this whole "playing down to competition" narrative is constantly brought up is beyond me. For that matter, think about it this way in 2020;

If the Steelers truly did play down to the level of their competition, the Jaguars, Cowboys, Eagles and Texans games all should have been losses. For that matter, tack on Cincinnati as well as Joe Burrow has shown he is capable of winning games. In total, Pittsburgh should be 5-5 considering the narrative...

    .... oh wait....

They’ve definitely bucked that trend this year while keeping up their traditional upward trajectory going into December. Very exciting..

Cognitive bias imo. The Steelers don't play down to lesser teams anymore than the rest of the teams in the NFL. It's more about teams bringing it because of the 5 star matchup when the Steelers are in town.

Here is some data on "Tomlin plays down to the competition" bs.

I've read many more articles debunking the blind assumptions that closed-minded Steeler fans have about Tomlin's ability to lose to an inferior team. It happens to every franchise, year in year out.

Sometimes teams have it together and go on long runs. They beat everyone bad & good. More often then not they lose to a worse record team along the way.

I'm trying to find the article i read (years ago) that layed out the facts for the simple minded but am not having success.

Even when an NFL team is vastly superior to the opposition, they don't have that much larger of a chance to win against them. Even if you give them a ridiculous chance, say 80% chance the better team wins (which is way more extreme than in reality), if they play 10 times there is less than an 11% chance the superior team wins all the games. If they play 5 times there is less than a 33% chance they win all the matchups. People just have unrealistic expectations and seem to think the superior team should never lose to the inferior one. That is not reality.

I'll look some more groutbrook. It basically showed that Tomlin isn't any better or worse at losing to inept teams than any other coach in the nfl.

There are factors that aren't spelled out here. Weather, injuries to both teams before and during a game. What was the point spread which is a better indicator of how a team is actually playing than win/loss. Throw all of that data in a blender and it spells out that most of us have held on to the inference that Tomlin loses an inordinate number of games against losing teams, which the figures simply don't support.

I don't need to see the numbers, I saw the actual games as they unfolded.

    Interesting find groutbrook.

My conclusion is that this p-value is skewed by the Steelers success against winning teams.

Thanks, I'll read it later. I never felt Tomlin always played down to the competition. I can recall certain games where, without a doubt he did though. or The Steelers did anyway.

Comparing them to the Falcons, Ben could be the culprit.

did i say or did i say we play down to opponents. what i mean is that your not gonna tell me we shouldnt have blown them out. and not because they played good. it was the offense that played poorly. with all the backup players playing. we had ab advantage in my opinion.

let's not forget rg3 last year tho... he was all mr. bad ass when we clearly were'nt fully healthy. so ironic he starts this game at pitt with his team not at full strength. and yes..... didnt see much gloating from him this time. hate the ratbirds

I think Tomlin has done a tremendous job keeping the team focused this year. Hopefully, today’s performance is just an abnormally resulting from the multiple postponements and distractions.

Oh boy... this will make some heads explode. Do you mean to tell us that "Tomlin clunkers" happen to someone other than the Steelers?
