Conspiracy time... Were teams reading our coaches lips pre mask?

It's common knowledge Patriots would hire lip readers. Belichick is even on record saying he fears other teams are doing it to him.

Now I know Tomlin doesn't call the plays. But I just remember him walking up and down the sidelines blabbing out in the open. I feel like you could get really good intel from him pre mask. Our coordinators aren't the best at hiding their lips either. Occasionally Fichtner would put his halftime snack menu in front of his face.

I think we have learned something valuable during all of this. Mask or some sort of lip hiding should be used forever. Discuss.

I guess my thought on that would be that I dont see a huge improvement or even a huge change in the way teams are defending us, so I am not sure the mask is making that big of a difference.

 

The sooner all masks are gone the better.

I don't think lip-reading "LET'S GO MEN" or "THE HATERS ARE GOING TO BE ALL OVER THIS DEBAUCLE" were really helping other teams against us.

If this is what you're refering to- "And coaches like Seattle's Mike Holmgren and Philadelphia's Andy Reid, among others, always cover their mouths when calling plays from the sideline because they fear other teams have lip readers trying to determine their calls."- it doesn't say that Bellichik was doing it. the article refers to the illegal taping incident that cost them a first rounder. Taping is not lip reading.

Holy cow you’re obtuse. Holmgen and Reid “fear” other teams. That doesn’t say it happens. Also the link you shared is about videotaping not lip reading, but you go right ahead and do your best Q impersonation.

Even if teams did employ lip readers I’m betting it would backfire as often as it helped. The person doing the lip reading would have to get every single thing right. Every word, letter, number etc. the. They have to either decipher that information themselves or relay it verbatim to someone else. That person would then decipher the call and relay it to the proper coordinator who would then make the proper call. All of that would have to be done in under 45 seconds. If anyone along the way made a mistake you have a blown play and boom there goes little boy blue for the score
