I think we better start preparing for the realization that Harrison is probably done as a Steeler after this year. At least this will give us plenty of time to determine if we have his replacement on the roster or we need to address that spot in the upcoming draft.

Not good. It's time for Worilds or Carter to step it up and win the job.

Definitely not good news BUT it's pretty sad when the TEAM has to rely on a couple of players on both sides of the ball to hold the TEAM together! JMO

If we accept this premise, we need to start planning, because his replacement is not on our roster. Carter and Worilds are little better than backups. Maybe they'd be better suited to a different scheme, but (much to my dismay) it doesn't appear so. Is there a FA we can target in the short term?

I'm not ready to give up on Carter or Worilds. Carter is only a 2nd year guy and Worilds I believe is a 3rd year guy. I think Worilds is the better pass rusher but I think he is very injury prone. I think with Carter you have a more of all around backer, he does have to get better at rushing the Quarterback.

Don't give up on these guys, lets face it Harrison didn't become a starter till he was 28 years old.

It may be time to give A. Robinson some snaps in the D in just passing situations. Look, the kid may be a "1 trick pony", but when you are going to be rushing that guy every down anyway, why not take advantage of that pony. Harrison was not expected to be what he is, neither is Robinson. Let's at least take a peak in those situations when we can.

On another note, I hope Sylvester is back this week, cause we really need him to replace Foote in the D as well.

At this point, they should stop wasting time and look to make a trade. The trade deadine is week eight, time to go outside the box and do it. It is painfully obvious that Worlids and Carter are not it. The pass rush is suffering and hurting the defense so its time to look for the best possible candidate.

Does anyone know who is a good candidate or who is available. I'm talking abot a difference maker who will help the defense right now. I know I would be willing to trade Sylvester, Worlids, and Carter for one great player. Are their any other current Steelers players who could be used in a trade to get what they need?

This might be the year to take advantage of the later trade deadline and possibly give up a pick to get someone to fill that spot long term. I have no idea who is up for free agency when the season is over but maybe we can find someone who is playing the last year of a contract on a bad team.

Either way this is not what I had hoped for news in the off week.

James Harrison is in my opinion pretty much done with the Steelers. Troy will give us maybe 2 more years.

I have changed my mind for next year's draft. I now think we need to draft the best pass rusher in college football available when we pick as opposed to the best safety.

I am willing to take a safety in the second round now...we are not getting any pressure on the QB like we used to...Woodley is great, but we need more...

better pass rush makes our DB look better

I've very disappointed that Worilds hasn't performed better, I know he has been hampered by some injuries but still, he's not where he needs to be yet. I remember reading an article on the post and how the coaches were so impressed with him, talking him up as JH heir apparent. He's not even fit to carry James jockstrap let alone take over for him. We have a big problem with no JH this year.

mrh, you are 100% right, I agree. I also feel like Harrison is pretty much done as a Steelers. If he can't get on the field this year, how could he possibly be good for the team next year. He wouldn't be worth what they would have to pay him. They need a pass rush now and Worlids and Carter are not it.

IMHO, they need to put a package together and make a trade by week eight for the best possible candidate at OLB who can help the time right now. Wwo is out their and available that would fit that bill?

I have a better question, who are we going to package that would bring back a JH caliber player.

    Edit:

Scratch that, it would just be draft picks, so what would you give up?

We all know trades rarely happen...I think we need to start building our defense through the draft.

In addition, start these drafted players right away..see New England Patriots..

Given that this has happened now do you think if the team could have a do over they would have taken Hightower instead?

I still believe we would have taken DeCastro given the state of our abysmal offensive line, but we'd have to think a little longer about it.

Can't answer that with DD on the sideline, have to see what he can do. I'm not going to use pre season as a barometer. If DD is what we think he is, it's still an easy choice for me, I'm sick of a crappy oline.

You are right Tomlin_Era, it would have to be some draft picks involved, but thats why I asked the question. I don't think we could get a JH caliber player in return, but someone who is good enough to get the job done, say someone who could get 9 or 10 sacks and put some decent pressure on the QB. Also, I say again, what players besides Carter, Sylvester, and Worlids do you think they can package together with picks to get what they need?

You'd never see a package of players, you only see that in baseball. You'd have to target a pending FA and hope you could lure them away for a 3rd rounder, given the fact that he may just end up a rental, you may get him for that. I wouldn't give up more then a 3 because we would most likely lose him after the year. Heck, may get one for a lower round, we only got a 5 for Holmes. Look for a situation like that maybe.

I've looked over the 2012 Free Agent linbackers and it's pretty sparse. I suppose if there is a silver lining to the fact that our D is probably gonna cost us a LOT of games this year it will be that we will maybe have a high draft pick to get a good lb. Curtis Lofton is a free agent along with Stephen Tulloch. But these are the only "big name" guys out there. I think it's gonna just come down to the draft. Maybe we can get some corners through free agency though. Another problem we have is that we don't have much money to spend and do we even have anyone to let go? Do you think maybe this is gonna affect the Wallace negotiations? He's basically the one guy we have that if we let him go would save us a lot of money to spread around right?
