    1. George Izo = played only 2 games thank goodness!
    2. Dick Shiner = truly horrible
    3. Kent Nix = No explanation needed
    4. Ed Brown - Yeah I remember Ed LOL
    5. Jefferson Street Joe Gilliam - in one game he had like 8 completions in 30 attempts
    6. Mike Tomczak - No redeeming value as a QB at all

    You got any you remember?

History is funny. Look back at the 1974 Steelers stats, Joe and Terry had almost identical stats. TB through 3 more TD's (7 to 4), same int's, same completion %, J0e was 4-1-1 starter, TB 5-2. Joe had nearly 500 more passing yards. Both had cannon arms, as I recall Joe was benched (with a winning record) because he was passing to much and did not receive coaching well (more to it of course), later he also had drug problems (maybe at that time as well) and Noll reportedly told his he was going to 'fun himself out of the league', which he did. Joe was perhaps one of the most gifted passers of that time, just could not put it all together.

Tomczak was a career back up, nothing special, but the redeeming value in him was at least giving a semblance that at least he could come in and guide the O with some decency (like a good b/u should). His career starting record is 42-31, no doubt most of the wins due to great D's on teams he played for, but hardly what I would call the worst of the Steeler QB's. He was what he was, and the only year he was listed as starting Steelers QB lead the team to a 10-5 record, we have had much worse.

    WrongWay Tommy Maddox

He had a knack for scoring points for the opposite team that I will never forget. Be it a fumble or an Int; his turnovers just always seemed to wind up being returned for TDs.

BTW while I may not agree they were the worst ever, I do agree with the assessment there was great disappointment. Joe had all the potential, whatever happened was likely a combination of things. Not everyone with great talent develops, not everyone can handle the pressure (I think he was the 2nd starting black QB in the NFL after James Harris). Who knows what all the complications were, he replaced a healthy TB at the start of the season, the team had a winning record, but like you said he accuracy (and attitude) were factors in Noll making the change. In the % TB was no better, but he threw less passes in about the same number of games, and the running game and D did the rest. While you remember that lousy game, I remember him coming in his rookie year and nearly leading a comeback against the Dolphins on MNF. The receivers complained after that he was throwing the ball so hard they could hardly catch it.

I recall Ditka mentioning Tomczak in an interview. He said at times in practice he would look an all pro, then do some of the stupidest things, lol. That's the reason he was a lifelong B/U.

My memory of the Steelers goes back to around ‘75, so for me it’s definitely Mark Malone. In today’s NFL Malone would get about 50 snaps and then get cut, yet he held on for years here.

He was pretty bad. I remember he had one of the longest TD receptions November 8th 1981 against the Seahawks. 90 yard TD reception from Terry Bradshaw. He was very fast for a QB of that era.

Tommy Maddox one game against the Texans they had like 50 yards of offense, but won the game because of Maddox turnovers

There was a fan saying: "There will be none for the thumb until Malone is done."

I think it was because Malone hung around for so long and caused fans a great sense of futility for years.

When I think of who was the "worst" I immediately think Jim Miller, but he did not last long so less suffering with him. Without looking I would guess his QB stats had to be real bad. So worst based on ability I say Miller and worst based on causing long term suffering Malone is probably the one.

    Rudolph when you factor everything.

    1. He had to 2 camps and a full NFL season to get accumulated to the NFL. Most QBs do not have this luxury.

    2. He had an above average o-line and weapons. Most QBs do not have this luxury.

    3. Draft pick wasted on him and going to get somebody he trains with in off-season. Most QBs do not have this luxury.

    4. He had an elite defense. He just had to be average. Most QBs do not have this luxury.

A lot of these guys being named were thrown to the fire. Average teams. No weapons. All he had to do was be average and he couldn't do it. Worst QB in Steelers history and one of the worst things to happen to this franchise.

He hasn’t played nearly long enough and most of that is just spouting off bs. When he was on the money his receivers dropped more passes then I want to remember. You don’t like that they drafted him, we get it.

Maddox was very talented, he just couldn’t put it all together. I remember when I was a kid watching that falcons game, one of the best games ever he put up monster numbers, close to 500 yards, plax had over 250 yards receiving in that nail biter.
