Sad news. I remember him as the Steelers defensive coordinator in the early 80's.

Woody was a native of Butler, PA. Also the DC before him George Perles died a couple of months ago in January.

Woody's most infamous game had to be when he was head coach at Missouri. Missouri had Colorado beat and future Steelers wide receiver Charles Johnson was the Buffalo's QB. In a frantic series of plays, Johnson spiked the snap, but the officials failed to change the down marker. Colorado would end up getting an extra play and scored on 5th down. Widenhofer had started to turn Missouri's program around, but after that game, all the momentum of the program was sucked out of the air.

He knew how to coach defense though.

I was recruited by Woody's Wagon in 1987 as a walk on, but I took the D2 money. I will try to find the letters. Anyway, he was a good recruiter. He had some bad luck when nations top RB, TVZ, out of STL who was going to Mizzou blew out ACL in summer all star game. Plus, the guy had to work for 3 athletic directors and 2 chancellors in his 4 years. 5th down game was another typical things that happens in COMO. He was a Mizzou alum and so wanted to turn it around. RIP Coach
