Keep in mind that, if Joe Montana would have wanted to play here after being let go by San Fran, there is no gurantee that Big Ben would be here in the subsequent years to follow shortly after. Too many variables for certain. One aspect is for certain though, Joe Montana > That QB who shall not be named; twilight years or otherwise.

Joe being from Western Pa, about 45 min south of
Heinz field would have been great to have back the Hometown hero.
They just don't make them anymore like him in Western Pa.

I remember how bad I wanted Montana here. We didn’t do much outside the box thinking back then, very conservative in our decision making.

Dude... Joe Montana retired after the 1994 season. Even if he had played for the Steelers 93-94, Roethlisberger wasn't even out of college until 2004. That's 10 freakin' years.

We still would have went through QBs like Tomczak, Stewart, Maddox, etc....

    Does not matter.

Keep in mind that Cowher wanted a Guard from Arkansas the same year Ben was drafted. For all we know, that Guard may have been drafted. Who is to say that Cowher would not override Dan Rooney's suggestion at the time?!

Would have been great if Montana was a Steeler. Still had quality play left in the tank. If the choker Bills didn't knock him out I feel that he would have been hoisting the Lombardi for KC. I view him as the best ever followed by Bradshaw, not that robot system QB in cheatland.

I am rooting for the Chiefs to defeat the Niners. Can't have another team with 6.

Goes to show that even HOF coach Cowher makes mistakes. After the passing of time, we tend to forget them

Cowher liked Rivers because he played at NC State just like Rivers did. But Cowher really liked Andrews the guard.

I can remember a lot of mock drafts with us taking Rivers at the time.

Ernie Accorsi who was the GM of the giants said if he wouldn't of been able to work out a trade with the Chargers to get Manning, that he was prepared to draft Roethlisberger.

Crazy part Accorsi was also the GM of the Baltimore Colts in the 1983 draft and he had to deal with John Elway not wanting to play for them and had to work out a trade of Elway to Denver.

Ernie Accorsi was front and center of the two times that this really happened with a guy not wanting to play for a certain franchise.

1983 with Elway with the Colts.
and 2004 with Eli Manning with the Chargers.

That's a LOT of speculation. Like guessing what would have happened if the Cuban missile crisis had come to fruition.

The Steelers didn’t go for Montana because they had NOD, who had been to the Pro Bowl the year before.

He had been an upgrade on the Bristers and Malones, and Montana was coming off some injury issues.

So I can understand the Steelers thinking. But I would have loved to have seen what Montana could do here.

    Not really.

Dan Rooney ended up overruling Cowher's decision to draft that Guard. Ben was chosen instead. Like CK stated, Bill wanted Phillip and not Ben.

We could have had Rivers with Bell for MOST of career, Like he did with Tomlinson...4 out of 15 years, or MOST...

    Right Roberto :dancing:

    We cut Johnny Unitas,

    passed on hometown Dan Marino,

now come to find out we didn't sign Joe freaking Montana (another hometown guy) after he left San Fran?

What's worse is we stuck with Neil O'Donnell over signing Joe Montana?? I truly believe and defend that the Steelers are quite simply one of the most well-run organizations in all of sports but damn hell this team has made some seriously questionable decisions over the year's.

I was at a funeral service for my cousin that day. The service was in a hall attached to a bar. I got tired of people mourning so I went to the bar to get a beer and watch the game with my wife. Then his sister showed up. Then a few more people. Then his mom and dad. The only one still in at the service was my cousin. I had a can. He was in a can. And to believe, some people think their families have issues.

You still have no idea how percentages work do you? Tomlinson played 11 years, 6 of them were with Rivers.....6 of 11 is indeed most. Dont go spouting that Rivers didnt start, thats not the issue at hand. the issue is how many years of Tomlinson's career was Rivers a team mate!!! Blame the SD coaching staff for not playing Rivers if you want, but the percentage doesnt change for starting versus watching. Nice try though, good luck.
