I understand why Brown is not returning kicks this year but we need someone who can be a big play guy like Brown was last year.

Don't we have Rainey for that? The only thing I don't understand is, why Brown is still sometimes returning punts.

They're probably just easing the rookie into the job.

I think the reason they might be holding Rainey back from returning kicks is because they're not sure if he can take a hit and hold on to the ball. For some reason to me he just looks like a fumble prone guy. I mean he took that one hit in the preseason Colts game and coughed it up. I've talked to others on here that agree with me that he might have a problem with ball security. But who knows? Also under the Emperor goodell special teams rules they have basically killed that whole phase of the game. If you really think about it if Devin Hester were just starting his season now we would probably never have seen the electrifying plays that he has given us because all the kickers just boom it in to the stands.

What we need is for kickoffs to not be on the 35 yard line. Are you saying you don't like Chris Rainey, or have you not heard of him?

i don't know ... i sort of like the kickoffs being there, decreases the chance of the (historically often) bad special teams screwing stuff up ...

Sometimes I just want to bang my head against the wall with Steeler fans.

Against Denver we had 1...yep 1 returnable KO. That 1 return was for 27 yards. Yep, he didn't break it to the house, but it was a good return. That was the only return opportunity they were given as every other return was a Touchback.

Against the Jets, Rainey had 2 opportunities with an average of 22.5 yards. The Jets kicked off 3 times TOTAL for the game. To start the game was a touchback, the other 2 came after the Jets first 2 possessions. After that, the Jets NEVER kicked off again.

I would use another 3 letter abbreviation ( or whatever it's called on the internet).

First game all the kicks went through the endzone(even Swisshams).

    Second game, limited attempts.

Seems Brown has been taking punts near our goalline, probably taking pressure off the rook.

I suppose that next we complain about the quality of commercials during replay reviews

i think that brown is retunring the punts if he stands like inside teh 20 .. i thin tomlin has more confidence in him just to simply catch a ball. fair catch a ball or make a good decision to let it go into the end zone for a touchback... i think rainey is gettig the nod ot return the punts when we are in beter field position in case he drops it...? jsut my observation but i coud be totally wrong.. i think brown catches it in more non return (less chance for injury) situations

It might benefit teams with crappy ST coverage (often times that's us), but it doesn't benefit the game. It's bad for the sport. I used to look forward to kickoffs. Now I'm impressed anytime somebody is actually running with the ball.

    :roflmao:

The way it is now, why even kick it off. Just put it on the 20 and save the time.

This is how I feel too. I'm so sick of this "protect the players" crap. Special teams is supposed to be at the players discretion anyway. If you don't feel "safe" call a fair catch. It's pretty simple really.

There has been nothing to return so the jury is still out.

What evidence is there that Rainy is a fumbler? A feeling???

yea he's been known to at fla..

i think we ought to get 1 point if the kicker kicks it through the uprights on the KO. if it misses and goes out of the EZ teams start at the 25 like college is doing. if he makes it they get a point plus the team only gets it at the 20. at least put a little excitement back in it.

 i dunno. the league wants more scoring, so why not put some worth to it. if he misses the other team gets a 5 yd. gift. heck we may even see teams draft guys to jump up and block the one's that are just going to clear the crossbar. 7 footers. if they block it they get to start at the 30. :hmmm: LOL

Yeah, there's way too small a sample size at this point to render any sort of opinion of our kick return game. For what it's worth, we're 12th in the league in this department but we've only returned 3 kickoffs in 3 games (thanks, Goodell #NoFunLeague). Only two teams in the league have less kick returns than us (Denver and St Louis with 2 each).

Still, and I know the time is limited, but Rainey is simply reminding me of Stefan Logan at this point. He's gonna have to do something spectacular to start winning over fans and eliminate silly threads like this one.

Has he returned it two times in reg season yet? I would wait for an entire season of work before drawing conclusions.

@ Fla. he touched the ball 465 times/11 fumbles.

It does appear that Rainey was a lot better when he was running against 2nd and 3rd stringers in pre-season.
