Will the next Steelers offense be built on the run?

Will the Steelers draft a good running back in the 2020 draft? It could make sense to do so.

    1) Running backs seem to be undervalued at this time, so a good one could realistically be drafted in 2020.
    2) Defenses are presently built to stop the pass, so a running approach could be successful.
    3) A mostly running offense controls the clock and goes along with the predatory defense that the Steelers already have. Forget coming back from a large deficit with that kind of offense, though.
    4) The o line needs to be refreshed, also doable with lower round picks and udfa.
    5) I really like James Conner but he is just not durable.

It’s a passing league. Rules are built for it.

Plus Ben will probably be back next year. There is no way he would sign on to a run first offense.

He’s not even very good at checking down to the RB.

Sandlot mentality hurts & helps him. Bradshaw understood how to win much better, thanks to the emperor.

Ben will want a passing game & I think he has enough pull to get it, right or wrong.

If Ben comes back in shape (literally and figuratively) to put this team on his shoulder, it's going to be his show. And his show isn't run first. Also, if he comes back, Fuchtnuts and Tomlin will be back as well.

If it is determined relatively early that he won't recover properly, I could see a shakeup at the top. Tomlin isn't going to want to be exposed for the fraud he is and have to answer for another lost season, and this time not due to injury. Pouncey will be gone as well (he will retire if Ben does). That means an overhaul on the line (it needs it anyway) and a new, designated #1 qb for Tomlin to deal with. I just don't see him putting himself out there where he has no scapegoats or excuses for another bad season.

I could see us going run heavy without Ben and Pouncey. A new qb is going to need that to survive the season. But we'll be lucky to pull out 8 wins if that's the case. Ben's really our only hope for a legit shot at the playoffs next season.

    This is the correct answer.

Until the rules change this is going to be a passing league.

For me I can't wait to see our WRs next year. Johnson taking over the #1 spot, letting JuJu go back to being the best #2 WR in the league, and Washington has totally rebuilt his game this season being away from Ben's shadow. This 3 headed monster is going to be tough to stop.

I still do not believe that Randy will be back next year; He was completely exposed as a fraud this year.

Could be, or Dionte just might surprise and make that leap in his 2nd year. the last few games he has really come on as well. I think the interesting thing is where they decide to put the money. Love JuJu, and this year was supposed to show his ability to carry a team without AB. Ben's injuries and his own not withstanding, he really had no real shining moments. Washington showed a lot more (even with limited offensive talent), and DJ seemed to grasp more as the season went on. Now if they hire a decent coach, let's see where these guys go from here.

Dallas has Ezekial Elliot and they aren't even built for the run offense. This isn't the 1970's. The next generation of QB's coming into the league is all about passing stats and the run game simply can't keep up.

People need to get the idea that Pouncey is a great center out of their heads. He has lost it. 16 missed snaps this year alone. The next closest has 6... He hasnt been good in 4 years and the argument that they ask him to do more is BS. 2015 was his last good year. Was it 2017 when he blew out the knee? Either way whatever year it was when he blew out the knee...the year before that was the last good year he had

    Hey Hanratty#5.

I agree with you here if Ben does come back. There has been some mumbling around here about bringing Bell back. If that did happen, along with Ben, that would be great! Opposing team's had to special game plan for Bell. Something that none of our current RBs require. This has a trickle down effect throughout the entire Offense. AB's departure as critical as it is, would have some of its voids filled with Bell coming back as well as my Formidable #2 WRs stepping up. I think both individually but more so collectively they could fill much of the Brown void. If they could all be, and stay, healthy on the field at the same time.

The offence was at its best in recent years when it ran through Bell but I cannot see it working to the same degree again. Bell does not look like the same player this season and there is no AB for the opposition to account for either, AB gave Bell room to operate, never mind how would they pay him or what they would need to give up in draft capital. The Jets would probably want a second round pick at least. No way the Steelers can afford that with all the other needs they have.

I do agree that with the defence they now have it is going to be hugely important to establish the run and control the time in possession battle. I like Snell and Whyte, add another veteran FA or trade a mid to late 2021 pick for a good back and put them in a position to succeed with a better coordinated game plan and an improved line.

If Ben can still throw and the main WR trio take a step forward together there is a chance it may all come together. Injuries will be a huge factor as always.

The jobs of the offense should be to take care of the football and to score points. Most points come from the ability to pass the ball. Difficult to win games consistently without the ability to score points. The Steelers need to get better at the QB position. They need to bring in a better back up QB. Determine a plan for the future of the QB position. The future at QB is difficult to determine or realize at this point.

Built on the run with the progression being the PA pass ... Stop trying to out smart Coaches with multiple packages and groupings ...Pick a damn package that we can run and throw from and develop the game plan from there ..Always have a threat of the run even if you split him out ...Always have a threat of multiple WR'S even if that is TE'S and RB'S who can be split out ...

Basically get 5 skill guys who can run, catch, and block use them anywhere from a power house backfield all the way to a 5 WR set and everything in between.. And please peeps don't give me this aint HS BS .. GB runs a lot of power house and they flex out of it a lot ..They also have multiple run and pass plays from each and every set they use ...

Use the damn off season to practice and create a balanced attack that the packages don't predict the play before the game even starts ...

Balance is the key to a consistent, winning NFL offense. A franchise QB is also a key ingredient, but that franchise QB must see the benefit to a balanced attack and not need to ring up video game stats.

    The Wildcat ;)

Right now we don't have an every down type back. If Conner could stay healthy maybe, but that ship has sailed.

This offense needs balance. Anyone that expects Ben to come back and be what he was is premature.

    Fitchner is not the answer.

I'd love Kevin Stefanski as the next head coach. His offenses in Minnesota have been very efficient based around the run.

We'd probably need to draft a runningback.
