The replacemtn refs do stink but that was a legit call with the hit on Sanchez. The defenders need to be smarter than that.

There have been no extra flags so far in the Steelers game today. All flags were well deserved.

The phantom PI and the review that didn't at least lead to Dwyer being down in the back field were the only 2 that I saw that were sketchy.

Guys, the regular refs sucked too. The phantom PI call is the first call that I thought was really bad of the replacements. Face it, if they were botching games left and right, the old refs would be getting a new contract by now.

I think the problem with the Dwyer call was the challenge itself.

Rex said he was challenging that it was a fumble.......and the ref went back and decided it was not a fumble.

If Rex would have challenged spot of the ball.....then it would have went back to where the knee was down.

When they review a play, they are supposed to review the entire play. Everything about the play is reviewable, including things the coach may or may not have mentioned. It was a terrible call, likely because the refs had no idea they were supposed to review the entire play.

    No...thats not true Shaner......they ask the coaches...what are you challenging......You can't challenge a fumble or a catch...and then go...well I saw holding so that other stuff don't matter....loss of 10 yards.

It is 100% true. Holding isn't reviewable, but Redman's knee being down is and the refs should have reviewed the entire play and ruled that Redman was down at that initial spot. Even if that's not what Rex challenged, the entire play is reviewable. Of course not everything is reviewable such as possible penalties that occurred on the play, but something like Redman's knee being down is reviewable. The commentators very clearly stated what the rule was, plus I've seen it many times in the past.

Then the commentators got it wrong as well....If you challenge a catch...and the DB is clearly yanking on the facemask....you don't get to say...it is a catch...as well as a 15 yard facemask.....they ask the coaches specifically what are you challenging coach...and he then says....possession....or spot of the ball, etc...

Had Rex said he was challenging that the runner was down...thats what they would go look at....he was challenging that it was a fumble....the refs should not even be watching one second of film that is not the runner being either down or not down before the ball comes out...because everything else is moot to the challenge.

I already said penalties are not reviewable. I stand by what I said, the refs can and do review the play in its entirety, and the entire play is reviewable. It doesn't mean everything is reviewable, as penalties are not, but Redman's knee being down is not irrelevant.

I will look up the official rules tomorrow and post them here, as I'm confident I'm right. I don't feel like doing it during the game right now.

Given that Jim Nance said that Roethlisberger threw a pass when the Jets offense was on the field they might not be the best go to guys in the world.

I cant remember.. was this review done by the booth? The booth refs that do the replays in the final 2mins of the half/game are not replacements.

BTW, what is the beef that the regular refs have? Is it about money? Regardless, we will always biatch about the refs whether they are regulars or scabs. We love to hate them and they will always call crap calls... Even when they make the right calls, someone somewhere is gonna call it garbage.

If you say so, but I've seen this 100 times with my own eyes, where something is challenged, but something else is noticed on the review. Like Simms very clearly said, the entire play is reviewable. I've looked in the NFL rule book and the NFL refs handbook and read everything there is to read about instant replay but it doesn't say one way or another. So I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I stand by what I said.
