All the talk of how bad Rudolph is ridiculous at this point. He has a few strikes against him.
    1. Big Ben is not your typical QB. Not many QBs can extend the play like he does. You cannot run this offense and expect the the next man up step in and run the offense as he did.
    2. Lack of mature receivers is not helping a first year QB. Receivers are so bad not only would Ben be having no more success, but even Tom Brady would be failing with this offense and receivers.
    3. Fichtner is not the quarterback whisperer. The only reason he is the OC is because of his relationship with Ben and allowing Ben to call the plays he wants.
    4. Tomlin and Fichtner are handicapping Rudolph not because of his lack of ability, but due to lack of receiver support.
I can almost guarantee if Mason Rudolph gets away from the Steelers, he will be a successful QB somewhere else in the league. I just hope he does not go to the Patriots. He was on their draft board when the Steelers stepped up and took him.

Haha! Of course just as I post this, Duck comes in at QB. Sorry for the jinx Rudolph!

(...and just before I click “Post Reply” Duck throws a TD! Great job Hodges!)

It actually is. Plug in a real offensive coordinator and watch our offense play better.

Actually, plug in a capable qb and things immediately look better. Duck didn't have great numbers, but he commanded the offense. He also took care of the ball. Should have given himself up on that late play instead of throwing it away, but I'll give him that one. Different offense with him under center.

And hopefully that puts to rest all the nonsense about giving Rudolph an entire season to relearn how to throw an accurate pass. Duck had less to work with than Mason has had lately and looked far better. Sorry Mason and all the apologists and fanboys, but we're a better offense with Duck under center. I love being right.

    1. Of course it's plug and play. Ben is mostly a pocket QB these days. Besides, playbooks are designed with set plays with specific timing, they don't have "QB arbitrarily extend play" built into them

    2. Don't completely disagree, but good QB's can make WR's look better than they are

Duck appears to be a better option than rudolph at this point but that doesn't mean Duck is great. Rudolph is pathetic just like the rudolph apologists.

That's pretty much what I've been saying all along. Duck was better from his first professional pass. He makes better decisions, can scramble out of trouble (a huge necessity considering our pathetic OL), and can put the ball on the receiver. He has looked more confident and capable than Mason has. And all the apologists want to keep saying Mason is young and Mason needs time and Mason Mason Mason. Well guess what? Duck has looked better and had LESS time. He's had LESS first team reps. He's had to come in cold.

Is he a prototypical qb? Nope. Is he going to be our franchise qb? Nope. But is he the best active qb on our roster right now? Definitely. He gives us a chance. Mason didn't. End of story.

Agreed with Duck being an upgrade, Rudolph is just not good. Duck shoes poise and pocket awareness. He can hit receivers.

I just feel that the offense as a whole had been stagnant beyond the injures. This is a 0-10 team that our offense eas struggling to move against. Wr still have a great oline, play calling doesn't put players in a role to succeed. We would be better with Ben but the offense was still horrible before he went on IR.

I agree with OP. Honestly, I'm surprised how open we are playing... prior years we would have gone max protect and call plays that would limit mistakes.

    My lord.

You gotta be some kind of stubborn to still be making excuses for Rudolph.

The Steelers nearly lost to easily the worst team in the league. He did absolutely nothing to change that arc. He's just not good and it wouldn't matter what team he was on. All that would mean is that his deficiencies were covered up some, not that he would get better.

Duck is much quicker in his decision making than Rudolph. Also as far as the running game goes, we saw for the first time this year what Bennie Snell football is all about. Steeler fans shouldn't give up and complain when in the first quarter Snell only gets 1 or 2 yard gains. As you see by the time the 4th quarter rolls around those 1 and 2 yard gains are now going for 5 and 6 yards and today he ran the clock out of the game. I know it was the Bengals but 21 carries for 98 yards is getting it done.

    1. The Steelers suck and are going nowhere.

    2, 3 & 4.... irrelevant.

    I'm
    I am
hoping Mason will be the next franchise QB, but a professional QB simply gotta make a play or he'll play himself out of the league soon. When you consistently show no pocket awareness & bouncing balls to open WRs, no excuse bro. I don't care if he used a slur or not ...as a fan I wanna see my QB make a play or two...

With Mason running the show right now, our offense is beyond pathetic. Extremely inept & it don't have to be that way. Mason has consistently been inaccurate with his passes. To open the passing lanes all you have to do is convert deep on a couple of double moves. Mason seem to rarely step into his throws ...almost as if he's throwing on tippy toes...
