I think this post sums it up really well. The other key aspect to consider is that no team has starting-caliber players waiting around in backup roles at every position. Every team in the NFL has depth problems at a majority of positions, and when a starter goes down those depth issues are exposed. The better teams find a way to compensate through other players stepping up. We have actually been pretty good at doing that over recent years (see Ben's 4 game suspension for an example). However, it's not going to happen every single time. Even so, as a coach, you have to send the message that you expect to win, and you expect the backups to do their jobs up to the standards set by that starters (whether or not they really have that ability). I have zero problem with "the standard is the standard," and I think that attitude is part of the reason that we always seem to be in the hunt when winter comes no matter what injuries we have suffered during the season.

Also, I agree with Snack's points on both the Timmons/Manning play and Mundy as a solid SS backup.

Where my concern lies is with the pass rush and the corners. To be a solid pass defense, you need either a good pass rush, good corners, or both. If you have a really good pass rush, you can get away with having less-then spectacular corners - and vice versa. However, if you are lacking both you are in big trouble. When either Harrison or Woodley are injured, our pass rush suffers. I haven't seen anything encouraging out of Worilds or Carter yet. That means that our corners need to be able to lock down better - and for an extra 1-2 seconds - on the guys who enter their zones. While Ike is very good against anyone not named Demaryius, the play of our 2nd & 3rd corners has been troubling so far - and we're not talking about "standard is the standard" backups here. We're talking starters.

Regardless of the effect on the Steelers...

I've found myself using "the standard is the standard" at work far too much recently, but I've found that when I'm in meetings with higher up management-types it seems to work like an absolute charm whatever the subject or context of meeting. I was going to write to Tomlin to thank him for getting me out of **** at work several times.

Curious...others have said it was an angle. Why don't you speak with them for a while. You gotta "win" this one or something?

I am not disagreeing with you that there was other breakdowns on the play. Geez...every play has breakdowns somewhere. You can't factor in IF this or IF that happens, then this will happen.

    Carry on..

I believe his point was that others have taken his position, but you seem to be picking on him and no one else.

    What he said.

Now, I gotta figure out how to block him - I don't have time for childish banter. Oh, and I won't slip and fall down or take any bad angles doing it either.

I see the following message where "myron's" posts were: This post was made by Myronwemissyinz who is currently on your ignore list.

TTF, if a "user" is in your foe list, can they still message you or does this just block posts?

Worth a few minutes of time to set it up. Great feature, ty!

I am picking on him because he is WRONG!! As far as me picking on ONLY him...he was the most vocal......We are talking about one play...#94 shoots the gap and has a a straight shot at #18....in the mean....#93 gets knocked on his ass and loses contain...#18 rolls out for a first down and EVEREYONE blames #94....WHY??????

Timmons took a gamble on that play and it didn't work....#93 took a wide step to the outside and it created a inside lane at which time #93 went to spin inside and fell down....So even if #93 would have stayed on his feet the spin move inside, coupled with Timmons shooting inside Manning would have still got the edge....

Neither guy made a bad play they both wanted to get in that Gap,,,,I will say 1 of the 2 must set the edge and neither one did,,, hard to fault either player on that play IMO....

I admit that this is one of those things that we will never know 100% because we aren't in the defensive huddle, but it seems like a pretty safe assumption to me that Timmons was not responsible for the edge on that play. I know that anything's possible and Timmons could have been assigned the outside on that play, but that seems really unlikely to me. He's the inside linebacker, and Worilds is the edge rusher. Timmons is blitzing from the beginning, either because that was the plan or because he read that the RB was pass blocking and went for it. From Worilds' perspective, it makes sense to me that he wouldn't expect Manning to make a run for the outside, so I understand his attempt at a spin inside. But that's still his responsibility, and his ass on the line if he blows it. Either way, I don't see how Worilds can assume anyone else will be out there in case he fails. And if it was a planned blitz by Timmons, then he really shouldn't have gone inside. If he'd stayed on the edge, they either would have had a very fast sack or he would have had to throw it someplace he clearly didn't want to.

I don't mind "The standard is the standard" line from Tomlin much. Though, I do grow weary of all the injuries.

The quotes that bother me are the ones after a loss such as, "we didn't make enough plays" or "we didn't come up with the game defining plays" or "we didn't make enough plays down the stretch but they did." Those are the ones that bother me. Instead, what I would like to hear is what exactly the problem is/was, and why it was a problem. Many of us fans can identify glaring issues, but it would be nice to hear the coaching staff admit to them--it would give me some comfort knowing that they have at least identified problematic issues. I often find I prefer hearing from the players over the coaching staff because they are often more detailed and critical of the problems/issues that occurred during a loss. I wish the coaching staff was more that way.

Yep - or use some Pittsburghese - like calling the refs a bunch of jagoffs or something. He definitely needs to get a little Western PA twang into his press conferences.
