Mason just hasn't passed the eye test. He doesn't appear to be confident in what he is doing.jmo
His decision making has been questionable, his accuracy has been off ,and his pocket awareness sucks.
Yes we had won 4 in a row before Cleveland but in my opinion there wasn't much progress at the QB position.
I don't wanna yo-yo quarterbacks but watching this offense has been painful, and it starts with him.
To be fair to play calling has sucked and the so called skill position players aren't doin him any favors either.
If his QB play is more of the same you have to see what you got in Hodges. Really was happy Mason beat out Dobbs
and I thought we had a really good prospect in him. Hope I'm over reacting.Guess time will tell.

It will be Rudolph but shouldn't be. I hope he can get it together but he looks like he is spiraling to me.

I'd actually try Paxton, former 1st rd pick, see what he can do with a second chance.

    Excellent point steel machine.

I have referred to it as playing Musical QBs ("flip-flop"). The Steelers supposedly had a 1st Round Grade on this man. They obviously think highly of his talent. With any job, several months of service is just not long enough of a work sample to make a true evaluation on an employee. Prior to this last game, he has done a decent job. IMO, he did not cost us any games except in big part, the last one. Management has to let this ride for the rest of the season to fully evaluate his abilities and see what they have in him.

I would like to see Duck again but baring injury I think Mason starts for the rest of the year.
Duck seemed to have something, a presence a confidence I liked his quick decision making.
He doesn't fit the NFL mold he isn't 6 ft 4 and maybe doesn't have a strong enough arm but when he played he got the ball out quickly and had some rhythm even with this weak offense.
He seems to think faster on the field then Rudolf does.
If the Duck doesn't make it in the NFL I could see him lighting it up in the CFL some day.

    Hey Kreighoff.

I really have not seen Duck in action. I am not sure where I was with what little PT he has gotten. I just feel that we have to let this ride with Mason so we have a longer body of work to evaluate him come after we hopefully win the Super Bowl (smile). From what I gather, Duck had a good collegiate career, like Mason. Obviously, that is not enough to go off of but that is the general starting point for most NFL QBs unless they played in the CFL or another "Pro League".

Once the season ends, the job will Ben's again barring any complications. If Mason lights it up between now and then he will be the #2. As for Duck, then there is Paxon. Once again, a 1st Rounder fallen by the wayside? Not sure. The "Science" of picking a franchise QB is definitely not exact. Just look at our drought between Terry and Ben. Now that sucked.

Switching gears for a second but along the same lines, man I really wish we had taken Marino. Imagine Dan with Cowher's defenses. If I was betting man, that combination would have produced several more rings.

Funny, all the years Jones was sitting around here behind Ben, I never once felt he was the "messiah". Come to think of it, I never felt that way with Batch or Lefty either. :hmm:

I've always wondered what a Steelers message board would have been like during the 80's and 90's.....and now I'm starting to live the dream.

This has been a lot closer than I thought it would be. Factoring in a couple of votes for Paxton Lynch too. I would say that if we think Mason is the future we have to start him, however given what I've seen of him I'm not sure I see him as the future.

I appreciate he has been dealt a rough hand and probably the lack of a running game is the biggest hurdle he's had to try and overcome. Minshew and Allen (panthers) have shown that you don't necessarily need superstar receiving targets to look comfortable as a rookie/untested QB but in Fournette and Run CMC they have extremely competent backs to fall back on.

Both Jaguars and Panthers have some pretty good receivers including Mcaffrey as a receiving threat.

They should make a decision and go with it. I don’t think it’s a good idea to go in thinking that he is on a short leash. The starter has to be prepped and practice with the 1st unit.

Well of course nobody felt like any 2nd stringer behind Roethlisberger was the messiah. He added 2 more trophies to the case.

I was talking more about the backups behind Maddox, Stewart, Tomczak, O'Donnell, Brister and Malone. I've been a fan for a long time and notice tendencies of my fellow Steelers fans.

I truly wish I thought that the issues on offense were all or even mainly on the QB but I don't. This offense is a complete mess, from the under performing line to the complete lack of playmakers at the skill positions to the coordinator. I didn't see anything from Duck in his start to make me think he can be any better than Rudolph in this offense. I guess if I wanted to find something he can do that might help it would be that he's a bit more mobile than Rudolph. Otherwise I just don't see what Duck is going to do to help the offense. Might as well roll with Rudolph and learn as much about him as we can.

From Duck's first pass, I was more comfortable with him under center. He was more effective and in command of the offense.

I get that Chark has had a decent year for the jags but I don't look at either teams receiving options and put them anywhere near the top half of the league. Panthers don't offer much at all beyond McCaffrey.

My point is that their rookie QBs seemed to do a lot better than Rudolph. I'm not saying this makes them better than Rudolph as obviously OC plays a huge role in this. What I would say is that I'm struggling to remember Rudolph looking composed, comfortable and competent for one full effective drive.

    It's a worry for sure

IMO you’re underestimating both teams receiving options. I totally agree on the OC and I don’t watch either of them enough to determine how well their OL is playing. I’m betting better than what we saw from ours Thursday night though...I’m not absolving MR from his errors either but I feel it’s a complete breakdown from the offensive side.

The fact the panthers jumped straight on moncrief tells me that their receiving corps can't be too strong!

You're certainly right about the OL, well from our stand point at least. The only game I saw fully of the Jags was at Wembley against the Texans and both OLs were horrible tbf.

Here's to hoping that Thursday night was the worst it gets for all aspects of our offensive efforts

    Another vote for Paxton.

To be successful this year with the limited talent pool it is time to go back to old school football.

I don't think you take Mason out. Steelers are not that kind of organization to flipping about starters. Sure Rudolph is showing signs of sucking but so is the offense as a whole. Let's not blame it all on Mason. He had a terrible last game and some crap went down but it's not the end for Mason.

How will JuJu Smith-Schuster's injury affect the Steelers' wide receivers? Although Smith-Schuster hasn't had the most productive season, he has at least attracted a good amount of attention from defenses, freeing up other receivers. But Smith-Schuster's availability is in doubt for Sunday's game against the Bengals as he deals with a concussion and a left knee injury that requires a bulky brace. Although the Steelers will have to absorb his likely absence with a cast of lesser-known receivers, there is at least some good news on the injured receiver front: Diontae Johnson (concussion) fully practiced Wednesday, and fellow receiver James Washington expects him to be able to go Sunday. -- Brooke Pryor
