The o-line can't open running lanes can't protect Big Ben, maybe Dwyer needs to start at rb. The secondary still can't cover pass rush almost nonexistent.

    About sums it up.

Having our line decimated before the season even began doesn't help.

No excuse for that pathetic performance on D. I want more aggression, and I want it NOW. ATTACK! We're going to lose a few games. I understand that. But at least go down fighting.

How come no other teams get their Offensive lines decimated before the season begins except the Steelers? Ever wonder? This is and has been getting really old. Again, two busts in the draft. Not saying DD is a bust, but he is of no value on IR and is thus a bust at this point. As for that other tub of lard from THE Ohio State, they can have him. He is a total bust at this point. Actually, the entire O line is a bust. Same problem every year, can't protect Jethro for more that a second, musical chairs at every position etc. Same song, just different singers.

    We don't attack anymore.
Apparently. The attacking that we do isn't "RAHHHHLIKASHDFLKSAJDLFLKSDAJ" its "Rah....Mrph!"

I agree with the thread title but I think it's because we're a changing team or we're about to become a changing team.

When I played, we were told that when our technique was wrong, injuries would happen.

I sure hope I'm wrong, but something's amiss in how this line is training and being taught.

I would like to see the same 5 olineman play an entire game.
Every game at least one gets hurt.

We only dressed 7 lineman in the game. What was they thinking? The past has shown that at least one of them gets hurt every game. We need eight lineman at least every game. Legursky is nothing more than a backup center. I guess we will be calling Essex and Kemo back. Even Jonathan Scott. Geez.

Totally agree. New season, same old issues (though I'll give some credit to Haley for being able to convince Ben he could benefit by quick, short screens and not always having to go for the long bombs).

The same PROBLEMS as last year.....the offense looked exactly the same as last year and so did our DEFENSE....we barely got a hand on a QB who has had four neck surgeries and is fairly OLD...I never heard Woodley's name or Carter's name called the entire night. :frustrated:

I don't know...the Offense does look different and better to me. The running game was not there, which seemed to be on the O-line. But the quick passing and the way they set up some of the plays was definitely new and effective a lot of the time. Penalties were a killer and a lot of the reason they got put into 3rd and long, which they did a pretty good job with.
Ben took what 5 sacks? 3 of those were in that frantic time at the end. If the O-Line is not improved at least it would appear they are trying to effectively game plan around that, which is more than can be said in the past.
It did seem like Ben started to get impatient at some point in the 3rd quarter and went back to ignoring the check downs a bit in favor of wanting to get the ball down the field. I think it was after the 71yard strike, but they were only down a point then...no need to change what they were doing then.

Watching Wallace getting wide open downfield last night makes me wonder where is the long bomb, we never threw one in this game, why have the fastest receivers in the game if your not going to use them: We won at least 3 games last year taking deep shots, fast short passes are nice but they dont score points, better take some deep shots downfield this week, or we are going to be 0-2.

I thought we did take at least 1 shot down field to Wallace and Porter defended it perfectly. But my head is spinning right now with all of the ridiculous threads so i'm not positive tbh.

To be fair, most teams don't sack Manning. He recognizes defenses to quicky and delivers the ball before any pressure can get there. You need a great pass rush against Manning to have a chance and sadly, ours has evaporated.

No. You're right. I'm not even sure Ben could have thrown that ball better. And I don't believe Wallace had a reasonable chance to fight for it as he was going full sprint. We also had Wallace WIDE open deep late in the game, but even if Ben had seen him, he wouldn't have had the time to throw.

Antonio Brown is my boy, but he dropped a TD pass that his contract says he should never, ever drop.

All Ben had to do was loft his short pass to Miller early in the game. He throws it at head level instead.

But ALL of these things happen - to every team. And all of these things WILL improve. What worries me are the problems that they either are blind to, or can't improve:

No push in the running game at all.

No real pass rush. Not even the appearance of trying to rush the QB once the offense goes 3-4 wide.

VERY generous zone defense. I'm not even going to harp on corners being 10-15 yards off the ball. But do we have to have so many HUGE holes in our zones? It's like a nightmare that keeps repeating. Receivers catching the ball and not a soul is within even 10 yards of him. And you KNOW they're already running to that spot, so how out of place were they to begin with?!?!?! This isn't a new problem. This problem is years old. Against certain QBs, offense, or situations, we go into a shell and start playing the "catch and chase" defense. We wait and hope the offense makes a mistake or fails to execute. Truly great Ds FORCE those mistakes.

I'm so tired of seeing us play to prevent the risk of a big play, only to allow them to march up and down all day on us... and give up the big plays ANYWAY to boot.

We were ranked #1 in scoring D last year. I said it then, and I'll stand by it: it's an illusion. When push comes to shove, we can't stop anyone. We won't even try.

What I didn't like was the same hesitancy to at least attempt a running play with a lead blocker in the 2 goal line situations. We have W Johnson on the roster who is a pretty good lead blocker & Dwyer who had some consistent success the few touches that he had. 1st & goal at the 2, why not try an I-formation running play?

How many of you think that Haley might have over thought things and over adjusted? He saw that they were shutting down the run so he tried to adjust his play calling to catch them off guard but instead ended up having plays get blown up.

Possibly. I did notice a shift in our play calling. It also seemed like Ben was calling a lot of audibles in the second half too though.
