Barron is slow to react to the run plays. Bush has yet to have the light come on. If we can’t stop or at the very least slow down the opposing run game we’re in trouble.

Red is a proven Buck. He reads and reacts quickly in stopping the run. He also blitzes from the inside very well.

It time to make the change, Vince is hurt, and we need a run stopper. He can’t do any worse than Barron.

They just need to play him correctly, attacking the run or attack the QB!! Let Bush roam and cover!!!

Two rookies playing ILB at the same time..... No Way

Maybe someday in the next couple years they’ll be the starters but it would be foolish to do it now.

I will also decline on this. Matakevich is who he is at this point. He is not going to get any better than what he is. Why even have him on the field?!

Ulysees Gilbert III on the other hand is still an unknown. I would have rather used him later in the season to obtain some snaps but desperate times call for desperate measures. As stated in another thread, Mark Barron's effort stinks.

Give the young, hungry linebacker a chance. He is younger and more athletic. Besides, I doubt he will show any lackadaisical effort.

I am a big TM fan but I just don't see him as an upgrade over Barron. TM is very good at reading and reacting to plays but he is pretty slow. I am not against seeing more TM but I am just being honest. I am ready to see less Barron however so at this point it might be a move worth making.

Atleaset the run defense would improve. It was just not Barron, Devin Bush
Interior DL were getting blown back five yards also before a tackle was made.
You can't tell me the Steelers Should not have made in game adjustments at this point.
Folks we are overmatched in all phases of the coaching department/s

I’m for anything that will help improve the team, but starting dirty red isn’t going to help. Hard no for me.

Hard pass for me. Times are tough, but Dirty Red isn't the answer. It boggles my mind how he continues to make this roster.

Barron is terrible in coverage, so put in the one guy who is even worse? No. Definitely no.

No. He is special teams only. The scheme needs to be slimed down and players put in situations that enhance their strengths. I feel that this defense is to much think and not enough react. Look at what Fitzpatrick did. Two days of practice and he was a beast on the field the best D player this past Sunday. Teams look for the mismatches. Putting their best receiver in the slot all the while a linebacker covers them. Or the beast tight end who is being covered by again a linebacker. I don't know Barron's body of work previous but he has been playing below average. Part should be blamed on scheme from a dolt calling the defense.

No where did I say have him in coverage!!! Bush along with the Safeties can handle that. Red is a tackling machine and excellent run stuffer/Blitzer and THAT is how he should be played.....

Exactly!!! Gilbert is an Unknown! Does he know the playbook, schemes , read NFL offenses and not be fooled by smart QB making the audible.... Speed is Great when it comes with smarts But if you’re behind mentally speed is Nothing!!!

Red knows the defense inside and out and can make all the defensive calls. Communication is key and has been an issue with this team. Maybe that will also improve.

My point is we know with Barron and a struggling rookie out ILB game is hurting and teams are running on us..... with the current film out there on us you better expect teams to really start attacking us running the ball.

Like it or not Red gives us the best chance to defend the run/ blitz from the inside and maybe even settle down the communication problems......... it’s worth the try.... if it fails and we lose..... oh well, we’re already losing with what we’re doing now.

Does it really matter at this point? The team is going nowhere. Might as well find out what we have in these rookies. What can it hurt? They lose another game? Nothing can stop that at this point.

I'm sticking up for Barron and bush. They don't leave the field and yes they are tired. Red and UG3 should be getting a few snaps a game while Vince is out. Our d-line is built to rush the passer, it's been that way since our olb were not getting it done. Since we got watt now, they have never changed the approach to the way the d-line is used. Our ilb are used as dbs and to maximize their run stop ability these two just be kept clean. That doesn't happen with pass rushing d-line specialists. Alualu may be our best pure run stoppers on the dl. Butts needs to start playing some as well in certain situations. Way too many snaps for our starters. Ola needs used as well.

What needs changed is the coordinator. Dirty Red is a nice special teams player, he got play time last year and got overwhelmed.

They played him as a Mack ....... that’s like playing Big Dan at OLB!!!!

Fort was the only Mack we had last year and it took until the end of the season for our coaches to realize that and actually act upon it.

Inside linebackers have to be able to cover, too. The troubling aspect of Barron's game right now is coverage. Replacing him with Matakevich will make things even worse in that area.

Actually, you don't know if Matakevich knows the defense inside and out. You keep assuming things because you want him to be more than he is. He's not worth a try. We know what he is. Gilbert is worth a try, not just because he is an unknown, but because he showed the skills necessary in college and in the preseason.

Matakevich probably knows it better than Gilbert at this point, but Gilbert can learn the defense. Matakevich isn't going to get faster.

Totally agree on the use of the DL but I can’t stick up for Barren. He was jogging in the first quarter so unless he played a game before this one I’m not buying the tired excuse. At least VW plays downhill and with passion. Also someone might want to tell Heyward they’re supposed to be rushing the passer. He’s not flashing at all....

Matakevich called the defense during preseason when he was in.... he wore the green dot. He was also a much better and more accomplished college LB than Gilbert and in Preseason.

    I’ve already discussed speed......

Again..... Barron sucks, not just coverage but mainly run support. Tyler will help this area because , like already mentioned, if we don’t change something about our run defense our season will quickly be over as other NFL teams will watch the film and game plan against our run defense......

Correct and Gilbert isn't going to learn sitting on the bench. He needs to get some playing time to see what he can do.
