Man I really had high hopes for this guy?

But maybe it is a good sign for Sutton and Ola that they impressed the coaches?

More than likely. Keep in mind though that Ola impressed last Training Camp. Keion likely did not do enough to make a good impression in comparison to Sutton.

Regarding Sutton and Ola, wishing for the best for both. Both seem to be more adept at pass rushing than others gave them credit for.

I think we are seeing a shift, they are looking at these guys and saying here is what we have invested. Here is where they should be and aren't . Here is what we can get on a younger cheaper player with a higher ceiling. I think Artie, Cam Sutton, Brian Allen, Dirty Red, and a few other guys are going to have show some big leaps to make the squad.

Yeah what happened to Cam Sutton? He sort of regressed as the year went on?

It’s definitely Brian Allen’s last chance. I actually don’t see him making the team unless he converts to safety and some how excels at it.

I agree that he needs to convert to safety but disagree that he has to excel at it. Our depth at safety (or lack thereof) is such that mediocre play will get him on the team.

Like another poster has said in a different thread: not good enough to re-sign, not bad enough to cut.

We eat 9m this year and he tries to play for a contract next year - whether it's with us or someone else.

Yep, he essentially has to be better than Jordan Dangerfield.

Are those throw aways? Bud and Jarvis are and were 1st rounders. Smith is a 6th and so is chickillo, is that the cutoff?

I never thought Adams did enough to impress and he quickly fell behind Ola on the depth chart.

Apparently not and I guess his lack of STs prowess probably made the decision easier. It looks like Smiths path starts with STs first...

The later the pick, the less likely it is the player will make it. It's not that there is a cut off point. It's just not a tragedy when a seventh-round pick doesn't work out.

how does that explain all the UDFAs we have starting and on the team? I get later round picks have a harder time but we have a ton of failures the last 10 years at LB.

Exactly how many UDFA‘s do we have starting on our team?

It doesn't explain that at all. Sometimes players beat longer odds to contribute. That doesn't mean we should expect every late-round pick to make it.

They definitely have some failures, it is a much bigger deal when it is a first-round pick like Jarvis Jones than a seventh-rounder like Adams.

The Steelers have a few. They will most likely start three guys who were undrafted free agents on the offensive line this season. Alejandro Villanueva and Ramon Foster are established starters and Matt Feiler is the more likely option at right tackle. If you want to count a nickelback as a starter, Mike Hilton was one.

None of that means it is some massive failure that a seventh-round pick didn't pan out. It's not. In fact, it is expected.

its not as much about the round or pick number its about the failures to draft and keep LB'ers. there have been a lot of them over the last 10 years. we drafted 3 more this year.

More often than not. If they make it, great but I'm certainly not going to look at it as a problem with the GM and scouting department when they don't make it.

Exactly. I get the overall points about the failures in finding linebackers, though the Steelers did have two first-rounders turn out to be studs in Shazier and Watt. Bush better be one for what he cost.

That Adams flopped doesn't really add much to that point. He's a seventh-rounder. They aren't expected to be impact players.
