New IR rule means that the Steelers must carry DeCastro on initial 53 & then can place him on IR after 4pm EST Tuesday.

Thanks for the 4-1-1. I read about this this morning. Indeed, good news for the Steelers.

Wow, funny how we were all on here speculating whether or not to keep a spot open for him, and now we have 8 more weeks to decide since we know he wont be back by then. But I saw that we have to keep him on initial 53 until tuesday. So that means we have to cut someone and then sign them back on tuesday when we can place Decastro in IR?

DeCastro must be on the 53 man roster, when the deadline for the final cut is made at 4pm on Tuesday. After such time, he can be placed on the 8wk IR and replaced by a player.

yeah why didnt they make the 53 man roster and the 8 week IR at the same time.. so you can put one on the 8 week IR and then keep 53 instead of cut someone on friday.. then place decastro on the 8 wk IR on tuesday and resign someone you just cut and have to take a chance you lose them to another team.. unless they tell that guy .. dont ding with another team .. we are going to pick you up on tuesday when decastro moves to IR.. stupid... why not do it all the same day .. typical NFL... greatest game on earth with a bunch of morons and the king of them all RG in charge..

I didnt think it was week 8....i think the week 8 thats mixed in here is that is when the trade deadline was extended to. The way i heard it was they can be on the special IR for any length of time needed and be brought back.

I think thats because thats when the "New Season" calendar year is officially underway...i read somewhere its the same with the regular IR...you cant put someone on it until then or they have to go through waivers. Also Tuesdays always starts the "new week" in the NFL...so its no surprise. While it doesnt specifically say that at the link below it gives an idea of dates and what happens on those dates/etc...and what it has for the 4th makes sense to be the first IR date.

    Directly from NFL.com story:

"The NFL and the NFL Players Association have reached agreement on a later trade deadline and an injured reserve exception.

Beginning with the 2012 season, the official trade deadline will be moved from the Tuesday following Week 6 of the regular season to Week 8. Teams will also now be allowed to bring one player back to the active roster from injured reserve during the regular season, with some restrictions.

"Language being finalized, but there is an agreement between NFL & NFLPA on changes to IR and trade deadline," a union spokesperson wrote on Twitter.

Also, starting next year, if a player signs or reports after training camp starts, that player can practice on the first day after he passes his physical. They will not have to wait until the third day.

The NFL's competition committee approved the changes to the IR rules and the trade deadline at the NFL Annual Meeting in Ma, but as of Aug. 22, the sides had yet to agree to enact the rules for this season."

While who knows what the language may be...it doesnt say anything about the IR being an 8 week thing...we shall see once its finalized i guess.

Here's an article from ESPN which does mention the 8 week IR:

NEW YORK -- The players' union has approved a rule change that will allow one designated player to return from injured reserve and play this season.

The NFL Players Association also agreed to move the league's trading deadline back two weeks to after games in Week 8.

NFL owners voted for both changes in May. But the union had to sign off on them and did so Thursday, six days before the regular season kicks off.

One "marquee" player placed on injured reserve will be able to return to practice after the sixth week of the schedule and to the lineup after the eighth week. That player must be on the 53-man roster after the final preseason cut, which comes Friday.

Moving the trade deadline could create more action than in the past, when teams rarely moved players at the deadline.

So who knows....either way its a good thing.

Wow, thats awesome, I had no idea they were even considering a rule change there. Long over do, being forced to IR someone for the entire season is idiotic.

Beautiful! I thought I heard something about this months ago, but didn't realize they were still working on it and totally forgot. Perfect timing. Now we just need Elvis Dumervil to get suspended.

This can`t be true... a rule change, that actually HELPS us?!?!?! :o :hmmm:
    What am I missing???
The league is all one vast conspiracy against us, and now this? (Just kidding ;-) :) )
This is actually very good news. I had heard about the proposed rule change, but I thought it was dead in the water.
I was already in favor of it, before DeCastro`s injury, but I had heard that it had not been agreed to, and thought that was the end of it.
    Very good news for us.
Get healthy, and join us for the 2nd half, young man! :superman: :clapping:  :applaud: :rawk: :dancing: :praying: :yeehaw:

Yes, it is shocking to be the beneficiaries of a rule change for once. Although this rule helps every team. Everyone always has a guy that's going to miss a ton of time but maybe not the whole season... it's just not always a major player like DeCastro. When it's a reserve player, they tend to put them on the full season IR even if they'll only be out 1 month, just so they don't have to deal with it. I always thought those guys got the shaft. Like, "Hey coach, I stubbed my toe." "INJURED RESERVE!!" "Dammit!" ...At least now 1 guy on each team can escape that fate.

Supposedly ( for all you conspiracy theorists) this was passed in MAY of this year along with extending
the trade deadline by two weeks. I like that that the NFL has made these changes,
    It makes for more competitiveness.
