I'll definitely give him a chance and honestly even if he is never more than a STs ace that is still something to be valued.

He has multiple pass rush moves. The real issue is that he simply isn't strong enough.

What does that have to do with Smith? Zeke Gadson was trying for the NFL when 1987-88? Were the offenses different then? Was there an emphasis on linebacker speed as there is now? Not saying he will make the team or the NFL in any manner but in today's NFL game he just might be successful. I'll try anyone if they can get the Dud off the field.

Gadson proves that college success alone isn't enough if the player doesn't have the right set of physical tools for the NFL. I don't understand how you wouldn't be able to see how that relates to Sutton, who had a great college career, but his lack of size will likely force a position change at least.

    Smith thinks he's plenty strong:

“People never thought I’d be able to bull rush people, but yet I can,” he said. “I’m 233 pounds, and I can put a tackle all the way back to the quarterback. The shorter you are and stronger, you [have] a lot more leverage whenever you play.”

So the reports of him getting tossed around at the Senior Bowl were just fiction?

Just checked the 2002 Roster. Harrison was listed at 6 foot (a reach) and 242. Question will be (beyond his development on the field), can he put 15 to 20 pounds of muscle on his frame and keep his quickness. I do not care what level he played at, the talent is there...just the big 'if' can it translate to the NFL level.

Smith reminds me of another late rd lber that didn't pan out for us .... that would be chris carter... look up Carter's game film in college and compare it to Smith's and you will think you're looking at the same player. .. Carter was no more than a specialist for us and his game didn't translate to the NFL level defensively...
I don't see sutton as being any different

That's the problem. The talent really isn't there. He is far too easy to push around. Harrison got stronger as a pro, but even in college he was stronger than Smith.

What's so special about this kid? Another specials warrior like Mata? We had Matthew Thomas who had a strip sack, caught it, and ran it 80 yards in a preseason game and wasn't good enough to keep but this kid is the answer?

I do not know all the contract jingle, but at the end of the season I feel the Steelers screwed up by not securing Thomas. I know they offered him a reserve future, but he opted to go with the Ravens. Kid may turn out to be nothing, and his underachiever status does not help, that said you just cannot overlook that speed and potential. Sometimes it takes a year for the lights to go on. He may end up as nothing, but would have taken really nothing to somehow place him on the 53 before the end of last season and keep him around.

Harrison went undrafted in the 2002 NFL Draft, as teams feared he was too short (six feet) to play linebacker, and too light (240 pounds) to play on the defensive line. I guess this proves small can get bigger and stronger and be a star.

They play different positions, there are rumors Thomas had trouble learning the plays.

Harrison wasn't getting thrown around like a rag doll in college. That is exactly how Sutton's performance during Senior Bowl workouts was described.

There were also off-field issues with Harrison. He had anger management problems all the way back to high school.

That said, this is one of those Tom Brady comparisons. Just because Tom Brady turned out to be great doesn't mean it is reasonable to project any other unathletic quarterback taken in the sixth round to be a Hall of Famer. Harrison was more talented than Sutton, but even if the comparison of who they were at the same stage of their careers was apt, Harrison was an exception.

This isn't directed at you. Yes we heard the rumblings coming out Pittsburgh about his troubles learning the plays. There always seems to be a spin coming out of there ,when let's say things don't always go as planned. There may be some truth to it,maybe not. I tend to think that if Thomas felt that not knowing the plays was the thing truly holding him back he wouod have chose to stay. Instead I feel he went to where he would have a better opportunity to play. I'm not sure he was given the same opportunity here or felt that he was.....The Steelers certainly didn't do him any favors releasing him twice. Which led to him turning down a offer to return and signing with Balt. We will probably know in the next couple of years who made the right choice.

    Spin :lolol:

Because the Steelers just love getting rid of good players.

How many of these camp darlings get released and ever go on to do anything.

I wasn't necessarily talking about player comings and goings. The Pittsburgh media is soft IMO and they quite often put either a positive or negative spin on something based on how it favors the team.IMO
The Butler/Eifert example is one of the most famous ones. There are plenty of other examples if you want to do some searching.
