According to Adam Schefter on ESPN Radio this morning, the Steelers and Jags had a "deal in the works" that would have sent Ben to Jacksonville for their first round draft pick a couple of years ago. Interesting. I don't remember hearing that at the time and was wondering if any of you had. I had heard that the St. Louis Rams were in the mix and maybe the Raiders, but I had not heard the Jags were the team that came the closest to landing Ben.

Thank God this didn't happen. The Steelers would have had the 10th selection in that draft. Undoubtedly, they'd have used the pick or traded down to get a QB. Who was available?

    Jimmy Clausen
    Tim Tebow
    Colt McCoy
    Mike Kafka

I'm glad it never happened for sure. As for Colt McCoy, I don't think he'd be all that bad if given a chance. Playing for the Cleveland Browns isn't gonna give him that chance...

I heard that too Jack and was just coming on to post it, beat me to it! I think us fans started the Rams rumor because they had the number 1 pick in the draft for Bradford and naturally we were going to need a QB to replace Ben. 12 to 88, you are so right, thank God they didn't make an emotional decision and pull the trigger on that trade, none of those QB's you listed can carry Bens jockstrap.

Well, we really don't know which draft they are referring to.

Hows that? They were going to jettison their franchise QB for a future draft choice leaving a vacant hole at QB?

A couple years ago???? so you try to trade a QB that has 2 super bowls? or was it from the off season issues Ben had?

My guess is it was the offseason Ben got arrested for rape. There were rumors out there that we were looking to move him. At the time you can understand the Rooney's having this reaction, even if it left us with no QB.

Dude, you better change the arrested part quick before you get killed for inaccuracy. He was only accused and never arrested or charged. In either of the 2 cases. Just sayin...

Yeah, probably looked around and measured the options. Smart move as much as we understand it.

I was measuring the options at the time too, but never would have given him up for anything less than two 1st rounds and two 2nd rounds, and from a crappy team expected to draft high. Even then, our team would get better in some ways, but I don't know who our quarterback would have been 2010 was a terrible year for QBs.

Yes, the year when he was ACCUSED of rape, that's what the report is referring too. Thanks Old School, I didn't even notice that :lolol:

Yes...accused. The point was his reputation was on the line and the Rooney's shopped.

With perhaps a few exceptions, we were all angry with Ben, including the Rooneys. I'm glad reason prevailed in the end and they decided to keep our franchise qb.

I m a huge Ben fan but when he was acting stupid off the field, I was frustrated with him. The ONLY QB that I would ve taken for him would ve been Cam Newton. Cam would be awesome in a Steeler uniform. :o

Yes, I heard about this on Mike & Mike this morning-- I couldn't believe it!! He was being shopped around the league, but no other team wanted him. Ben is soooooooo lucky to still have a job.

LOL, yeah, um no. Nobody wanted to give up a several draft picks for someone who was in legal trouble and in jeopardy of being suspended but if the Steelers had just released him, there would have been about 28 teams looking to pick him up.

LOL, well, hmmm, maybe. The Browns or Bills might have scooped him up. I stand corrected.

By all accounts, the Rooneys were furious with Ben after the Georgia incident so I'm not surprised they looked at offers. Ben is very lucky that he's still a Steeler.

You don't want to mess with ART II, I am sure he told #7 one more FU
and your outta here. It has taken us 50 years to build this brand and we aren't
going to let some snotty nose 25 year old dictate to us.

I remember hearing of that happening at the time, and I could've seen it happening. Word was Gene Smith wanted to draft Ben even though they took Byron Leftwhich the season before... He didn't like what he saw with Byron after 1 year and thought Ben was too good the pass up.

The fact of the matter is if that had been virtually any other player on the team, they would have been LONG GONE!
