Irsay tweets about “trade winds” involving “serious vet/starter”
Posted by Mike Florio on August 23, 2012, 7:44 PM EDT
APAfter Peyton Manning was fired and Andrew Luck was hired, we didn’t think there would be much for Colts owner Jim Irsay to tweet about.

    Wrong again.

Irsay says, with enough all caps to hurt the eyeballs and exclamation points to make Jake Jarmel hurl, that the trade winds are blowing.

He says that they’re “talking about giving up high pick for a SERIOUS Vet/Starter,” and that his “check book stands ready!”

The obvious targets are Steelers receiver Mike Wallace and Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew.

As to Wallace, Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians served as the Steelers offensive coordinator for all three years of Wallace’s career. As to Jones-Drew, former coach Tony Dungy has said multiple times that he wanted to draft Jones-Drew in 2006.

Wallace is the more likely target, even though the Steelers have said he won’t be traded. Coach Chuck Pagano has said Donald Brown will be the “bell cow” tailback. Besides, the Jags likely wouldn’t want to trade Jones-Drew within the division.

Regardless, Irsay’s reference to his “check book” means that, whoever the player is, he will be expecting a new contract.

Stay tuned to Irsay’s Twitter page.

UPDATE 7:50 p.m. ET: Irsay, perhaps realizing that tweeting about a possible trade may not get it done, especially if it wakes up some other team that could be interested in acquiring Wallace or Jones-Drew, has now decided to “move behind the curtain!“ Unfortunately for Colts fans, the great and powerful Oz already has spoken.

If we could get a 1st rounder I would say you gotta jump on that. Anything else I pass. We'll get a 3rd if we let him walk.

The Colts are not talking to the Steelers about a trade for Mike Wallace, according to CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora.
Most of the speculation has centered on the Colts chasing a cornerback, though LaCanfora suggests they could be pursuing an offensive lineman. Broncos LT Ryan Clady recently turned down a long-term offer, though it's hard to imagine the franchise dealing Peyton Manning's blindside protector. Aug 23 - 9:22 PM

Blow hard! People in his position should work behind the scenes.

I doubt it would be clady. He had a strong rookie season but has stunk ever since. They are thin at wr so you never know, they might be eying wallace.

if some team were willing to give up their 1st rounder for wallace, don't you think they would've done it before or during this past draft when we originally tendered him?

That was before the draft, a lot of things could have changed since then...One thing that might have changed for the Colts is just how good Luck is playing...Maybe the Team thought it would take him a few years to be ready??Now that it looks like he can play at a high level right away maybe they have hopes of a Playoff Team right now....

Maybr thry think Wallace is the key piece that Luck needs?Who knows ?But it seems sensible to me...

Long term, maybe this helps our team. But it does nothing to win #7 this year. Right now, I want to win this year. So, I'm against it.

I will however, give up Essex or Foote for a first rounder. Just sayin :herewego:

I don't know if anyone else reads through the comments when they read these articles but I have a habbit of reading them. I had to laugh when someone commented, "The joke is on Irsay...the Seahawks were going to cut TO anyway". Now that is some funny sh#$!

Colts acquired CB Vontae Davis from the Dolphins in exchange for a second-round draft pick.
It's a risky but high-upside move for an Indy defense desperately in need of press-man corners. Davis fits the bill at a physical 6-foot, 203 pounds with athleticism and speed for days. The Dolphins let him go because Davis failed to impress the new coaching staff by reporting to camp out of shape and floundering behind Richard Marshall on the depth chart. Davis is signed very cheaply for the next two seasons and just turned 24. The Colts will easily come out on top of this trade if Chuck Pagano gets Davis' career back on the right track.
