Should we consider signing a ex-Raisin?

Yes, I know there are way too many of these threads about signing cast offs, but in this case I think it might be a real upgrade....

Living here in MD (Yeah, I know!) I have been hearing a lot about the really good kicking battle in Baltimore - Billy Kundiff a Pro Bowler in 2010 (although he did miss that 32 yard kick in the playoffs last year that helped contribute to Baltimore's playoff loss.) and rookie Justin Tucker who has been blasting the ball all throughout the preseason. (He was 4 for 4 last Thursday with kicks of 33 and 53 yards and everything was deep out of the end zone.)

One of these two kickers will be cut and it looks it will probably be Kundiff. Baltimore always seems to find really good kickers. In Kundiff's case, he would love to stick it to the Raisins should he be the one cut. Now, if they keep the vet and cut the rookie we should snatch this guy up!

Do you think this is something we should pursue?

I'd be all for bringing in Cundiff right away if he's cut. I don't know anything about the other guy, but if he's good enough to push Cundiff, chances are he's better than the two we got now.

I hear what you are saying, but I still think either of their kickers are better than ours and they consistently kick the ball through the end zone.

We all know Suisham misses chip shots and it is rare in regular season games to see him produce a touchback. Kundiff is generally automatic kicking field goals, except for that one kick last year in the playoffs.

For what it's worth, Suisham ranked 19th out of 34 for touchback percentage, and Heinz isn't the easiest place to kickoff. He produced a touchback 39% of the time. Not great, but not exactly horrible.

Both guys did great in 2010 and not as well in 2011. But most of Cundiff's misses were beyond 50 yards, and Shaun missed more in the 30-50 range. I don't think I'd just hand it to Billy, but if they battled I'd definitely expect him to win.

In general, if it helps us improve, I don't really care what team they played for, once they get here they are part of this team.

Suisham's numbers haven't been bad since he got here, people simply don't trust him when he lines up for a kick. I'm always nervous before a kick, I was only confident when we had Gary, he was automatic. :superman:

Some players just don't inspire confidence. I don't know what it is. Suisham always looks a bit nervous. But his numbers are basically good. Not very good, certainly not Gary, but good.

Kickers are an odd breed, in terms of confidence. For years, Mike Vanderjagt was the most solid kicker you could want. Then that miss against the Steelers in the play-offs, then what? Back to the CFL pretty quickly. (In fact, I seem to think he was replaced in Dallas by Suisham... but could be wrong)

I would like to see what Cundiff brought to the party, though. I'm not sure he would be a mega-upgrade from Suisham, in which case it probably wouldn't be worth the change. But it would be interesting to see.

Yeah, you're right. I was just trying to express my feelings of expectations. And probably neither of their kickers will be cut until the last minute.

I say Hrapmann should be our new kicker. The guy goes down the middle everytime.

When one of the two kickers from the Ravens are cut, they will automatically be picked up by some team waiting for them.. The Steelers would have to act fast. Probably contacting both of their agents ahead of time so that they can let them know they want them when the decision is made. They are both on every teams radar that needs a kicker!

IMHO, both of those guys are better then what the Steelers have. And yes the Steelers would have to cut their kicker if they bring one of those guys in because it would be so late unless they would be granted a roster exemption for a few days.

I agree. I like this kid and for some reason I'm not as nervous when he lines up to kick a FG versus swishy.

Cundiff the kicker who cost the Ravens a chance to go to the Superbowl I'll pass rather keep young guy Hrapman instead.
