Marcellas Wiley, I believe. Whatever... I hope everyone picks us to miss the playoffs, that usually when the Steelers do the best.

Again, often times the "experts" and national media types know less than the local fan base. But I can't blame them. Their job is to formulate an opinion about 32 different teams. There just isn't enough time in the day to do a thorough, in depth study of each team and make educated prediction about each one. So often times they rely on what the general perception is in the national media and extrapolate that out into how they think a teams season will play out.

To me, his opinion is worth little more than what Joe Ordinary Texan may think about the Steelers and what some of you make think about....the Rams.

I think they do it because it's the "fashionable" thing to do. The Steelers are in the playoffs almost every year so if they pick them not to make it and they don't then they can say "told you so" and if they do no one is surprised.

    So... business as usual.

Last year, the Steelers were too old.

    Don't worry about it.

I might sound like a Downer Dave, but I think the Steelers have some legit concerns, they lost a lot of proven veterans, and a lot of these young guys are unproven. And some vets like Harrison, Troy, Hampton, Starks, Kiesel, and Clark.... we don't know if these guys will stay healthy. History tells us they might not.

I would say my biggest concern is if we can dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball this year.

Our run game in preseason with the first and second stringers on the O-line hasn't exactly been dominant. Pouncey and Decastro look quick, but I don't see them exactly mauling guys out there. Starks is going to have to save us at LT again, and we are not sure if he will be ready week 1. In a recent interview he doesn't sound like he is too confident he will be ready any time soon. Adams clearly isn't ready and it doesn't seem Gilbert will get the shot there.

Also this preseason so far... some of the depth on our Dline looks a little weak too. I think our skill guys will be fine, but if both lines aren't up to snuff we might struggle at times during the season.

Teams are still going to spread the field and throw at will on our D until we show we can stop it. It's the same D sans Farrior and Gay that were torched by the Ravens and Broncos last year so until the Steelers dhow they have improved on D I think the concerns and naysayers have a point.

    Good point...

Keenan Lewis has looked steady, Cortez seems very promising.

I really thought Curtis Brown would have had a break out preseason game by now. The way he gets beats in coverage is a little concerning. I really had high hopes for him, but it is still too early to give up on him.

I'm really liking Robert Golden though. He looks like a keeper.

To be fair lets look at it from a non Steelers fan's perspective. There are 6 spots with four going to the division winners. So In the AFC south you have the Texans becoming the dominate team since the Colts are in rebuild mode and not sure if they can challenge the Texans. In the East the Pats are still the team to beat and the gap between the Jets, Fins and Bills is questionable as to who ends up on top this year. The West is a three horse race as well with no one really standing out. Could be the Raiders, could be the Bronco's, could be the Chiefs, the Chargers have too many question marks in my opinion. That leaves the north which is a very tight division. Basically it is win the division or tie to guarantee a playoff spot. So yes if the Steelers struggle then they could find themselves fighting with other mediocre teams for a 6th wild card spot. They key of course as always is win your division games for sure. These analyst and talking heads are looking at the big picture which is that the gap in talent level has closed so much that the space between elite teams and good teams is very small and there could be more and more 9-7 teams, 8-8 teams fighting for playoff spots. I think you are going to see days of teams going 13-3, 14-2 and so on falling by the wayside although there will still be some lopsided loss to win records.

I was asked yesterday, "didn't the Steelers lose a lot of players"

My response, "none that could help them win anymore"
