Overall, the organization has done the right thing. They honored the contract and paid him $8m this last season. He will still be a part of the organization in one manner or another. However , I don’t see him playing again

Having the goal of playing again is great to have, but how can anyone honestly see him suiting up and playing again? He's still struggling to walk normally, never mind running and laying a hit on someone.

As for coaching. I honestly can't comment too much on that because I haven't seen if he's able to. Playing and coaching are two very different things. Just because he was a player, doesn't mean he can coach just like just because someone can coach doesn't mean they ever played. I'm just happy it looks like this guy is going to be able to continue his life as normally as possible. That said, if he CAN coach, keep this man in house.

What happened to Ryan was devastating but really, that's football. A contact sport. And how it happened it sure didn't look like it would be that detrimental. I wish him well.

The Steelers paid him the 5th tear option knowing he wouldn't be able to play. He has made strides. But really besides one or two people, I don't feel he is even close to suiting up again. The Steelers will take care of him, one way or another as others have mentioned. But they can't take up a roster spot. Sign him to a contract and IR him? Sign him to the practice squad? I don't feel that any of the other teams would pick him up given his situation and he can rehab from there. Or make him a coach? He is hell bent to play again though. Again they will do what's needed to take care of Ryan.

Shaz is ineligible for the practice squad.

Just offer him an assistant coaching contract. I’d assume he’s not hurting for money, he can contribute to the team, be around the players, and learn the trade.

Drafting Tee Martin over Tom Brady was a mistake too, but every other team in the league made a similar one.

Completely a fair comparison. Unless you are talking keeping him around in the FO or an assistant. This is a business and doubt the team will just hand him a roster spot out of loyalty. They were not loyal to some of the greatest steelers of all time and they were also great people. It's not personal and roster spots are valuable.

Your right. Looking for scenarios my itchy trigger fingers got the best of me. Guess we will see in the coming weeks what the plan is.

Just to be clear, the 5th year option is guaranteed for injury. The Steelers exercised it in May of 2017, several months before the injury. They did not know that he wouldn’t be able to play when they guaranteed his 2018 pay. I think our organization is one of the most upstanding organizations in the league, but it’s a stretch to think that they would have paid the full $8 million if the guarantee wasn’t already made.

I’m not sure that is such a great job? A lot of time away from home for a young guy.

They could have pulled it, no? Like they can still pull Duprees or is my time frame off? If yes, I think a lot of teams would have.

No. Dupree’s can be pulled because the guarantee is for injury only.
