    Special teams:

    31st in return kickoff

    5th kickoff return allowed

    17th punting return average

    29th In punting average

    32nd In punting return allowed

    32nd In penalties

    32nd In penalty yards

    31st In fg percentage

    30th xp percentage

Then this team can suck my butt lol

But this problem goes so far above the special teams coach to overall personnel philosophy. We cut the punter who was far superior in preseason to keep a more expensive and horrible berry who routinely shanks punts and who's averages are pathetic. Why? A game of inches and you are willing to cede 10 yards or so a punt which routinely turns into more thanks to poor placement or low hang time?

I couldn't believe they actually splurged on a kick return specialist this year. How long have we went without having someone that was even a threat to return a kick for a score. Worse leaving the duties to your top offensive weapon to get injured.

I'd rather keep the special teams coach and lose Tomlin

Smith isn’t causing all those penalties the players are?

Our special teams usually stink when the depth on the roster is subpar. If our entire linebacker room was all studs we would be killing it on special teams. Instead they are all duds.

You have to have the right guy to be a return man, Steelers have never drafted the right guy since A.R.E.

I don’t like our punter, but apparently, according to Steelers Depot, they are valuing his directional kicks over his ability to flip the field with long kicks.

Bottom line I think it’s the players. Smith is doing th best he can with what the has.

I'm starting to seriously lose faith in Art Rooney. He's far too conservative and complacent.

Man I totally agree...They are some scary BAD numbers....There is NO WAY this guy should keep his job. The hidden yards are so important, and between our bad punts, penalties and poor returns ,This is hugely affecting games...Its a coaches job to make his players better, put them in the best position possible and evaluate talent..Not sure he is doing any of this.

Yes, this is special kind of failure. Read they are not renewing Porters contract so that's one down.

His players don't even know the rules. Isn't that a coaching function to develop his players?

Some of our younger LB's don't get a jersey on Sunday but McCullers does or a few other stiffs that contribute nothing. Maybe having more tacklers on the coverage teams might help.

Directional punting I barely remember Berry ever putting one out inside the 10, I don t see that as a strength at all.

Well, Butler still has his job so I imagine Danny Smith is safe. I would have had most of the staff packed and gone by now with Tomlin driving the bus out of town but what do I know? I guess the standard really is the standard when it comes to Steelers football.

This is why they are 6th in yardage allowed, but 16th in points allowed. too many short fields.

By the time you’re playing at the professional level you should already know the rules

Problem is when your defensive philosophy says long drives hope they make mistakes, you kind of need to flip the field a little more.

    Especially in today's NFL.

I also thought our punter Berry was horrible in directional punting and a weakness of his.

Honestly I’m okay with Boz coming to camp. Bring in true competition for sure.

But we need a new punter. And a new return specialist. We also need anew set of special teams coverage players and strategies. Replace DHB. Replace Nix. Replace Dirty Red. If, competition is better than these guys, great. If not, keep looking.

    I’m not a “blame A, not B” guy, but...

Are there other sports where we blame a rules-based misplay on a coach and not the player? Golf, baseball, basketball, hockey, tennis, ... I can’t think of one.

While the players should know the rules especially the specialists it's still the job of the coach to drive them home especially in such rare situations like free kicks. The players should of known but the coach DS failed in his duties as well.

Just using basketball as a example. If there is a scenario where a team has no timeouts ,while the players should be aware of it. It is the coaches job to make sure everyone is aware of the situation. Fouls to give and things like that. Just one example of how coaches should be on their Ps and Qs

My philosophy on Smith is if you can't really do much worse, you should at least try to do better. The problem with this team is if they make a mistake in bringing in another coach. It's pretty safe to say he's probably gonna be here a while regardless.
