Tomlin is a very good talker. He always words things in a way where it temporarily takes the sting out of the lose. Then you realize he’s wording it that way to cover up his massive mistakes.

I’m on the fence as to whether or not he should be fired. We’ve blown the heck out of this season. I can’t think of another season we’ve blown worse. It has to be blame on Tomlin. He’s had a lot of bad no calls and calls.

I still don’t see how Butler has a job. I think a different scheme and voice on the defensive side of the ball would change things. Who knows we might have some talent we don’t know about. Meaning some of our players might do better in a different scheme.

Last I don’t think the Rooney’s will fire Tomlin no matter how bad the fan out cry is to fire him. This season definitely stings seeing we were looking at a top seed just to most likely miss the playoffs. I can tell you if we get in somehow I can see us doing some damage. When something feels like it’s taken from you but you get it back your more greatful.

All of this stuff has been hashed out before. Tomlin's defenders will point to the winning percentage while his detractors will point to the playoff failures. I'm in the detractor camp because of him not being able to prepare the team for every opponent. The realization should be kicking in with the Rooney family after this week, Butler's interview was very telling.

What that said to me was what I always believed, they don't have any game plan when it comes to their opposition. They look at film as it relates to their mistakes and not to what other teams are doing or their tendencies. Talking about defending against a player who has been on IR since October isn't a gaffe or mistake, it shows that the coaches don't put in the time or work.

That statement is exactly why you see them go out and play a team with 2 wins and struggle because they don't worry about details in those games and it happens every season. I understand Tomlin has a high winning percentage but you can't ignore the 9 straight seasons losing to sub .500 teams, no other winning coach has that happen so consistently.

I remember watching pro football talk before the Raiders game and Mike Florio mentioning that that was the game the Steelers needed to win but often lose. And as if he was looking through a crystal ball they end up losing. There are a lot of reasons for it but the players not adhering to fundamentals, the multiple years of miscommunication on the defensive side of the ball and the constant mismanagement of the clock.

After 12 years the same mistakes keep happening there is an issue. To top it all off is Butler's gaffe, and that is that the coaching staff isn't focused on details and that perfectly explains why the team is so Jekyll and Hyde, lack of focus in details makes for n unprepared team and when they lose they almost always look unprepared.

The Saints game isn't one that I fault Tomlin on, they are least looked as if they were prepared to play that game. The Raiders game looked as if the team didn't do any film study and the chargers game the coaching staff admitted that they don't look at how a team will adjust. The offense that was on fire couldn't score in the second half and the defense collapsed...Again.

Butler has to be fired but I think Tomlin is just as responsible, we bring up Colbert in the draft day misses but Tomlin has to sign off on those picks. Dupree being picked up for the 5th year option is a failure on Tomlin, he doesn't deserve that, he is a first round pick that plays ok if he was a 4th rounder and that is being generous. We reached for Artie Burns and we gambled on Edmunds because he is athletic even though there were players who had much better game tape still available.

There is a lot of blame to go around but a lot, if not most of it, has to be on Tomlin. It isn't like these issues just cropped up, they've been here a while and just like a splinter that isn't pulled out, it is beginning to fester. The team really needs a change at HC but I know in my heart this won't happen and when it does it may be too late for it to make any real difference.

Why didn't Cowher win more than 1 Super Bowl with his players then? FYI, Cowher didn't draft and sign all those players on his own either.

Yeah most likely when Tomlin goes Ben and Pouncey go along with them. IMO

    Enter rebuild.

And then things will get really interesting.

I think Rooney has a plan, he's thinking if he can keep the clowns around for a couple of more years , theres a good chance they can draft Trevor Lawrence the QB for Clemson.

Ok I'm on board for keeping Tomlin, Butler and Ben around. :herewego!:

When tomlin finally goes I bet he doesnt get hired as a coach again. Unless theres another situation where both DC &OC are running the team and all they need is a cheerleader.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, coach Mike Tomlin is not in danger of losing his job regardless of whether the Steelers make the postseason.

Pittsburgh could make changes to its coaching staff this offseason—defensive coordinator Keith Butler looks to be on shaky ground—though Tomlin's job is reportedly safe. The Steelers have limped to the finish line, losing four of their last five and need a victory and a Baltimore loss to clinch their third straight division title. Tomlin deserves at least some of the blame for the Steelers' late-season collapse, though James Conner's ankle injury and Chris Boswell's continued struggles obviously haven't helped matters.

No way Mason sees the field with Tomlin around. Tomlin, for whatever reason LOVES Noodle Arm Dobbs.

Tomlin is going nowhere any time soon. Just like Noll and Cowher before him, he'll leave when HE decides. I honestly believe the Steelers could go 0-16 and his job would still be safe as far as the Rooney's are concerned.

When will the Rooney's ever become tone deaf to this horse****.

No. Just in case you are new to this NFL thing, it is a business first and foremost. A business. Repeat it often. If you think ANY of the owners actually give a crap you are sadly mistaken. Owners care about the business. They care about making money first. Making the playoffs is money to them. Not making it, a lot less money.

Sadly, many fans feel that the owners have the same drive, motivation, or heart for their team as their fans do. They don't. They do care if the seats are filled but I don't see them feeling the same way as the average fan who works all week and then puts a lot of effort into their team on the weekend.

I don't see it from any of the owners and the Rooney's are included. The bottom line is making money, period. That is the ONLY reason ANY business exists, and that is to make money. If that is not the motivation, then we call those entities a Charity.

The business these owners are in just happen to be football. That is how they make their money. It could just as easily be manufacturing or providing a service. They have chosen to use football as their method of making money.

This does not mean any of them are say, greedy, it just means they use entertainment as a vehicle to make money.

FWIW, the Rooney's are no exception. We would all like to think that the Rooney's somehow stand above the rest of the owners, but they do not. If they were genuinely motivated fans you would think they would be more intimately involved in team and league matters. Those matters are when they get hosed many weeks by incompetent officials, they remain silent. You see they still make money and that is their motivation.

I am convinced the only way you get any of these owners to give a crap is to not fill up the stadium. Empty seats speak louder than losses. If folks continue to pay their money to see the circus then Barnum is happy. He doesn't have to put on a good show or upgrade the entertainers since the fans will come out no matter what.

So, I ask you, what is the motivation to improve the restaurant? If you serve crummy food but the folks still come to eat it, why spend money to improve your product? Remember, the Rooney's despite what you may think or believe do not bleed black and gold. Green is their team color.

Well, they are on the verge of missing the playoffs so, maybe they should listen. Thats a lot of loss revenue. And over the last 5 years, their playoff record is less than stellar. More loss of revenue.

For the record, I don't agree with your overall premises that owners don't care about the team. Billionaires are A-type personalities, they want to be the best in everything.

No! They were tone deaf to Cowher's 13 consecutive years without a Super Bowl including 3 consecutive losing seasons and a lower overall winning percentage. In the NFL craps game the Rooney just let it ride.

Never said they didn't "care" about their team. Their perceived "care" revolves around a business model. Profit and loss. Do you really think Jerry Jones cares about the Cowboys or is his caring directly related to their bottom line? He cares because he wants the business to make money. He does not care because he has this die hard love of the Cowboys. Same with Kraft in Boston. Where was he in the 80's with the Patriots? He bought the Patriots and expects them to win and to fill his pockets. If he or Jerry were like the Browns, they would get out, that I am sure of.

So, caring as you know and see it is not the same caring I feel that they have. The Rooney's have owned the team from the beginning and that gives them a one up on the other owners but the NFL is a business and they make a lot of money with their socialistic setup whether they win or lose. Who does not want to make the playoffs though? Seeing that all your salaries are paid by playoff time, any money you make in the playoffs go directly in your pocket. So, yes, all the owners want to get into the playoffs since that home game means they just made several million for a 4 hour game. Not a bad gig if you can get it.

So, all this means to me is that the Rooney's and any of the other owners will do what they think is best for the business which doesn't always line up with public sentiment. Mediocrity sells in the NFL but not so well in the real business world. They, the Rooney's will only do something when it effects their bottom line. As long as the public continues to lay down their money, why change for the sake of change? They make a nice living being 8-8.

Of course he cares about the Cowboys, it can be both. I don't know why you assume that just because it's a business that they can't be passionate about it too. I own a business, I picked a business that I am passionate about. In fact, I'd argue that both Jones and Snyder are too passionate about the team, they meddle too much.

And I already answered your last paragraph. They are missing the playoffs, isn't that the basis of your argument? It's affecting their bottom line.

Agreed. For me, it is all about entertainment and I'm not going to spend money for entertainment that does not entertain me. I can find better things to do on Sunday that dont end with me being pissed off and in a sh!tty mood.

So much so that Jerry Jone's Cowboys has not seen an NFC Championship in two decades.

Dan had seen plenty since then. Art Rooney II's story is still not written.

Not saying the Cowboys are the model franchise. JJ is too involved. The above poster said he cares more about the bottom line than the success of team. Wrong.

Part of the reason the Steelers didn't have a losing season under Tomlin because the Browns have been awful for 15 years (2 wins per year), Cincy has Marvin Lewis (3 wins every 2 years) and they'll generally split with Baltimore. That's 4-5 wins per year. But if you look closer - the Steelers generally don't have a 1 seed and at times, don't take advantage of a playoff bye - so while they are okay - they struggle in the playoffs because when talent is closer and coaching matters, they generally fail. Tomlin is 3-6 in his last 9 playoff games. That's a losing record and reason enough for a hot seat.

If you ever read up on the Rooneys, you'll discover that they care mostly about people & how to treat them.

That's great and all but it's to their detriment when they're more worried about hurting feelings than doing the right thing by the franchise.
