This is why I appreciate when Ben talks, you know where you stand with him. I really see no point in wanting to hear sugar coated fluff

The cat is already out of the bag. You can't retract what has already been reported and seen. If Red plays, he will likely be injured further. Just sit him down for petes sake!

I see your point, but the game doesn't revolve around telling the fans every injury that every player has. There's no good reason we need to know everything. At some point it takes away from the competitive advantage a team may have. I wish the Steelers would operate a bit more like the Pats when it comes to injuries. Disclose nothing, ever.

Provided the Steelers win every week, I don't need to know who is banged up. So that's why i don't appreciate when Ben talks.

...Sorry you bought into the hype...those were his CAREER stats.."or being able to find the end zone in goal-line situations" - 3 career TDs...
"How about 17 carries for 121 yards. That's over SEVEN YARDS PER CARRY"...against the 22d RUSH defense in the league

You are sure right...believe me, I LOVE the fact that he got that TD in Baltimore and I LOVE that he is on my team. My whole point was to show that he has YET to be a proven starter in the NFL...he is a "training camp hero" on the Steelers Boards, he still requires as many reps at camp as possible.

I was really referring to everything in general. I do see the point of keeping some injuries quiet. But as a fan, I liked knowing where DD was at in camp with his progression that Ben got slammed for. How does that hurt anyone knowing that information. As a fan, I like being informed about my team. I'm on a no fluff diet.

Again I am with Shaner on this one. There are a few Hypothetical scenarios in a case like this that I could come up with that could negatively impact (small or large) a situation by not having a filter or pause button between ones mind and their mouth. I'm not in the camp of people that boast about "hey, at least I'm being honest" or "I'm just telling it like it is" 100% of the time. Yes, there are many times for honesty, I concede that. But, I could see future restraint in close and personal (game) feelings or opinions with his QB for fear of unwanted exposure OR misrepresentation and therefore effecting their relationship. Or maybe it could negatively effect a players performance by shining a brighter light on an already stressful situation on the parts of the game the kid is struggling with in his first weeks playing at a pro level. Sure, maybe he needs to man up or have thicker skin if he wants to play at this level with the big boys but, players are human and transitions are negotiated and matured differently by everyone.

Again, I see more possible down side to up side by divulging info that benefits who? Us fans so we can question our players ability in these early stages of PRACTICE? I don't know, this brand of info doesn't have much value to me.

I just don't have confidence that when Ben speaks on team matters it's going to be in the best interest of everyone. Ben speaking about team matters in a press conference is like watching a drunk man trying to cross an icy street :roflmao: :praying:. If this wasn't the case it would get the negative media attention or debates on message boards it sometimes does.

I also agree with Shaner on injuries. I'd love for an opposing team to mis-prepare in game planning for certain players.

Oh I'm fine with disclosing that DD is struggling in Camp, but shouldn't a coach or DD himself say that? I don't like one player talking about another player that is struggling. That's not Ben's job to be doing stuff like that. If DD wasn't showing much work ethic, then yes, call him out for that, but don't call out a guy that is struggling unless you are a coach.

I doubt anyone was hurt by that, although it did cause a flurry of sensational exaggerations and colorful word twists from the media, and panic attacks among the less informed fans. I doubt DD liked hearing about how he sucks when all he did was basically say, "These guys are good." I know that Ben's not the one that changed the words. That was the media. I actually was extremely impressed with how careful Ben was relaying the message. It's not hard to imagine Ben saying something off the top of his head like, "Yeah he's struggling a little bit but he'll be fine" and then seeing the media run with it. At that point DeCastro would have to be pissed with Ben. But Ben didn't do that, he said it like it was and the media effed it up. And even then, it probably didn't do much harm.

But still, crap went on that didn't have to go on. Would you say stuff about your friend to the media that your friend hasn't said to them? Even if the question was "What's David's favorite food?" and the answer is "Potatoes," it's considerably more polite to say, "Gee I'm really not sure, but he's right over there if you'd like to ask him yourself." But that's more of a consideration of feelings thing more than affecting wins and losses.

Also, I've played hockey at a fairly high level, not pro, but still at a pretty high level. I would have been beyond pissed if one of my teammates was running their mouth about how I am struggling. If my work ethic is crappy, then yeah, call me out publicly as I deserve it, but don't you dare call me out publicly because I'm a rookie and I'm struggling (something most rookies do). Shut your mouth and worry about your own struggles, such as not throwing 5 INT's in a single game.

Thats the thing though, he wasn't calling him out publicly, his answer was fine and they didn't ask a coach, they asked Ben, so as a listener, I'm glad he answered it.

shanner, ben is the franchise qb. they are going to interview him no matter what we think about it. they know thats where they can spin off his words so to speak. saying DD had a tougher time with the physical then the mental is not really a stretch. DD does have an engineering degree from stanford. i'm pretty sure he's on top of the brains part. even more then ben. the same could be said if that question was posed to pouncey. which are you having a harder time with, the physical or the mental? if he said the physical, does that mean he's a bust? or it's bad press for him? i'd say no. people are getting way to defensive about DD and ben or redman. the qb will be asked questions about first round picks and starting rb's will be asked about their status. such is life in the nfl. people want to know, they are the driving force behind this 3 billion dollar a year juggernaut called the nfl.

Word gets around to the other teams, if they know he's struggling they'll attack him more... about reporting injuries, again other teams read the info too if Redman plays the other teams will be attacking the sore spot...the same way teams went after Ben's ankle

Yes to injuries no to struggling. It's preseason and he's a rookie, I'm sure that wasn't earth shattering news to other teams.

Yeah, fans do want to know progress reports on players, especially rookies, but I do not want to hear it from Ben, from Pouncey or from anyone else that isn't a coach or the player himself. I don't want Ben talking about a private conversation he had with DD, nor do I want Ben's evaluation of DD to be public. There is more than enough progress reports out there, we do not need players publicly evaluating other players or disclosing private conversations they had with other players. Like I said, I'd be pissed if I was DD, but I'm a firm believer that players shouldn't be talking negatively about their teammates unless it involves a lack of work ethic, than it's deserved. Even if it wasn't overly negative, it was still negative. This stuff drives me nuts and it always, always comes from the same guy. Other guys get questioned by the media too, it's not just Ben. Perhaps Tomlin doesn't have a problem with it, and perhaps most people on here don't have a problem with it, but I do and always will. It's not professional.

I shouldn't have used Ben as an example, he's a lighting rod, my point was, I just want to hear the truth. It's only a distraction to the fans because we tend to make a big deal out of things that aren't. As I have said before, I don't know why anyone listens to interviews if you aren't intersted in real answers.

Great, I've pondered in other threads if Redman has it to be a starter in the NFL for an entire season?

    Will he even survive preseason?

100% false. Like it or not, Ben is the heart and soul of this team and he's going to field his share of questions. If DD was as thin skinned as you guys think he is, he'd have folded up his tent and gone home already. Not to mention that very few here even considered what Ben said as an attack on DD, I'm sure DD doesn't feel that way either. Plus Ben treats his line better then just about any QB in the league, he never comes down on them about anything and I believe he takes them out to dinner after every game.

I thought this thread was about Redman's groin.

Honestly though, if Heath Miller or Antonio Brown had made those same comments the usual detractors would be applauding them or saying nothing.

I know I have to be considered a detractor (I'm not) so I'll respond for myself only. And honestly, you're wrong predicting what might be said about some player in the future. Anyway, I wouldn't give them a pass in this case. I try to stay consistent. But, those guys might not get scrutinized the same way because they don't have a history of questionable comments. If they did make comments about other players struggling then I know I would feel the same as I did about Ben's statement as well as what Shaner said about coaches commenting on another players struggles.

Remember all those years back when Ben said he'd like a bigger receiving target and Ward felt slighted. I didn't have an issue with what Ben said. I take things on a case by case basis. If there is smoke their's fire though and I'm always ready for Ben to say something questionable. I'd also like to say I don't think Ben has ever said anything that is really super bad when speaking about football. On a scale of 1-10 I'd weigh what I would consider his worst verbal gaff at about a 4-5. I think people are so sensitive towards comments about Ben that it's a knee jerk reaction to get his back against his detractors. Nobodies perfect and I call these guys on their stuff like I do politicians. I can defend a whole history while not liking some bumps in the road. As long as they are just bumps.

That's how most of us feel about you and shaner (just naming you two because you are the ones in this thread having the discussion). We feel you guys over react to every little thing about Ben. It has to carry some merit that very few people here actually had a problem with what Ben said while discussing DeCastro. It seems like nitpicking which is why we come to Bens defense.
