    After one preseason game.....

    Micah Johnson
    Dontay Moch
Vontaze Burfict (all were my draft ho's)

all Bengals backups....would all knock Sly off this roster.

    He better step up.

I kind of wish we had brought Burfict in just to see if he was ready to mature and get back to playing football. We could have always cut him at anytime, it would have cost us nothing to just bring him in for an evaluation. It must have been humbling to go from a 1st round pick to going undrafted. Perhaps his ego has shrunk and he's ready to put in the work.

I also wish we had brought in Randy Moss. I have a feeling he's going to have a very big year. SF is going to be airing the ball out a lot this year.

Burfict should have been one of the three 7th round picks....ceiling was higher than any of the 3 guys we did pick...all of which I don't think make the roster....maybe PS spots at best.

from everything ive read spence seems to be a lot smarter then burfict. We have timmons for awhile and he is the same type of player as burfict. We need somebody that can call the plays and adjust the formation as needed.

Your right about that Hack. The Steelers were not smart. Our 7th rounds pick were Clemons, Beachum and the TE David Paulson which I don't think they make the team. Burfict goes undrafted and will probably be an impact player for the Bengals playing against us!

Wasn't Brandon Johnson an ILB with Cincinnati? I had hoped he was brought in push Sly or surpass. I must say I am pretty disappointed in Sly's progress. I thought we had a future starter in him. But he seems to have hit his ceiling on BU and solid ST player (still important roles)

    The Bengals felt

    BACKUPS>Johnson

    and many of us think

    Johnson>Sly

so A is greater than B.....and B is greater than C....therefore A is greater than C

I Trust what the Steelers think/believe over what the Bengals think........

There's a reason why Vontaze went from 1st rd projection to undrafted. Not an accident or missed great opportunity.

There is also a reason why Tom Brady went from 6th round draft pick to 5 time Super Bowl QB and future hall of famer.....sometimes people are wrong.

better comparison might be Seahawks Brandon Browner.....1st rounder to undrafted for Denver....to Canada.....to NFL Pro Bowl in his first real year in the NFL

No kidding. They should have at least brought him in for an evaluation, especially because we aren't exactly loaded at the LB position.

If votaze ends up in canada and wants to return I'd be okay with the Steelers giving him a look-see. I just don't want the Steelers becoming a rehab for wayward players like dallas/cincy/raiders.

Because I actually watched the game...not the box score. Burfict would knock Sly off this roster based on last nights game.....so would Moch and Johnson........Burfict had I believe ZERO off the field concerns...he came to the combine overweight and out of shape...he is young and dumb....He was overly aggressive on the field......Joey Porter got in a fight before a game even started...and had to be pulled off the Ravens team bus after challenging Ray Lewis to a fight....in a game he didnt even play in. Yet we all LOVE some PEEZY! Anyone remember Jack Lambert? Everyone thinks the STEEL CURTAIN was choir boys...they were intimidators...they played angry....If the Lambert or Harrison where coming out of college with their pro resume....they would be called "not Steeler types of players." Yet they define the Steeler defense.

and again...the point of the entire conversation....was that the 3 Bengals backups would beat out SLY......Burfict is going to make that Bengals roster...and may even turn into a starter sooner than later.....and the Steelers drafted 3 PS squad guys.....but aren't they nice young men. :good:

and where did I say he is a HOFer? I said their backups are all better than SLY...our backup that everyone seems to love

Where did anyone say he was a hall of famer? We're saying that due to how much raw talent he has, he might have been worth bringing in as a free agent for an evaluation. Not getting drafted could have been very humbling for him. If he was still the same moron, then he gets cut a week later, or a day later, or whenever. If he seems to have smartened up, then give him a shot at OTA's. If he plays well, then give him a shot in camp and in pre-season games.

Why is everything so black and white with some people? Why is it either he's a bum not worth rostering or he's a hall of famer? There is middle ground and maybe, just maybe he might have been worth signing as a free agent for very little money.

If we based our evaluations of players by how they performed in preseason games, then:

    Mike Quinn > Terry Bradshaw
    Dante Brown > Franco Harris
    Keyaron Fox > Jack Lambert

You better believe that's how they evaluate them...the bottom half of your 53 is there because of how the preseason gets played out!

That is how a Willie Parker makes the team....this year if your name is not Decastro or Adams...you better be stepping up in the preseason or you are not making this roster

I don`t know anything about the players that are being talked about as "could be better than him`s"...
But I WAS very disappointed in Sly`s performance Thurs. Nite.
I had been hoping he was gonna be our future, but he looked pretty lame, in that particular game.
Maybe he just had an off nite? Happens to the best of `em.(Or at least the CLOSE TO THE BEST of em). Esp, in preseason... But that was UGLY.

I don't get worked up about preseason, and if he tanks during the regular season I won't be that broken up about it either. They'll just find somebody else, Steelers are pretty good producing LB's, have had a little success in that area ;)

In hindsight I would now agree that Burfict was worth a 7th round flyer.
At the time of the Draft I was opposed. Not at all due to off the field concerns. I had questions about a player that seemed to digress each year in college and ran a terrible 40.
As far as Sly is concerned, I'm willing to hold judgement until the end of preseason. He wasn't good Thursday night though.

Sly may never be anything more then a good special teams player. Only the Steelers know why the decided to pass on those other players. No point in playing the woulda, coulda, shoulda game.

Brady was used as an example. I think it is ludicrous to even compare the two situations. At least Brady was drafted and yes I believe the kid from Arizona State had off the field issues
