The injury that knocked Steelers FB David Johnson out of Thursday's preseason game is believed to be a torn ACL.
Johnson was in line for lead-blocking duties in Todd Haley's new offense. Undrafted West Virginia rookie Will Johnson is the only other fullback on the roster, so the Steelers will be forced to add another lead blocker next week. Aug 9 - 11:29 PM

    What's our plan from here?

Will Johnson will probably win the job by default... but honestly I think I'd rather use the extra spot to keep on of our talented RB's, and just use Legursky at the FB spot in power run situations.

I wonder if the Steelers are looking for the fullback more for blocking or catching in the new offense? If we had a stud who could block or chip a defender that penetrates the line then head off into the flat for check-downs, we don't need much more than that.

I would rather have a fullback beat off defenders first and foremost.

I wish we had a true fullback. I don't wanna see anything bad happen to anybody but there are about 52 other players on our roster whose injury would upset me more than this one if you know what I mean. Now I guess they are wishing they would've taken Mike Tolbert whent they had the chance.

Good post, I agree with you on this. However, I understand that W. Johnson was doing some good thing in camp. Looking good and maybe out performing D. Johnson. But using Legs is a great idea and keeping Redman, Dwyer, Clay, Batch & Rainey, a five headed monster!

legs didn't have a very good game at his regular position let alone being the lead blocker. actually i saw way to many one back sets in the run game very similar to BA's offense. i think will j. will be ok if we fix the line from being pushed into the pocket. again it always seemed like one guy missing an assignment and it caused chaos for the play. it seemed like a different guy every time too. alot of pressure came from the middle or right side.

I must admit that I haven't really been paying close attention this off-season. What about Batch? A lot of folks were singing his praises as a lead blocker / FB before he got injured. What is the deal with him? Seems a little small to me and haven't really heard his name come up too much lately.

Not sure but looking like he hasn't fully recovered or is lacking the confidence to go all out on that knee. He really hasn't shown to be the player everyone was praising last season. Still early yet, see where he is at the end of preseason.

really? not what i saw at all. he made what he could from the holes he had to run through. same as clay. there wasen't much of a hole for either guy that i saw. it didn't seem like the knee was a problem at all to me.

This is very normal reaction after a major knee job. He needs to get hit hard and not have it affect him and then he will get his confidence back. Playing tentatively will get him hurt faster than the big hit.( not a cheap knee shot)

    :this!:

@ Mac, I didn't say he was curled into a fetal position and sucking his thumb ;) It's also not what Knox asked.

I think you might be confusing him with someone else...as i dont rememebr ever hearing about B Batch used as a FB...the only things that were said was that he could easily take over MeMo's role as the 3rd down back...as he was good picking up blitzers/etc.

No, he has the right guy, last year in camp, Batch was a blocking machine.

True, but there is a world of difference between pass blocking and lead blocking on a run. The technique is almost completely opposite (driving to and thru your opponent as opposed to holding them up)

Exactly correct sir. Batch was a camp sensation last year for his ability to pick up the blitz. Lead blocking is entirly different. A Great FB does both really well and should also have solid hands because as I've said before, A FB in the flatts is ALWAYS Open!!!

Ahh, you know, you're right. I got him confused with Frank Summers. Good point!

I guess I need to get my arse in gear and start paying closer attention! Just another guy who won't be on the team long...

I'm not worried at all about this. I wasn't a fan of his pass blocking or pass catching skills. I'm sorry for his injury but wasn't pulling for him to make the team anyways.
