Now that the first preseason game is over, what did everyone take from this game? Are you happy with what you saw from the starters?

oline needs work. 7 sacks by the eagles.

Carter, OLB- has a quick first step. reminds me of clark hagans.

Spence and Rainey are very fast.

Marquis Maze looks a little fat.

Jerrod Johnson reminds me of Dennis Dickson.

Curtis Brown needs work. Burned for two touchdowns.

Offense looked pretty good. Ben will be getting the ball out quick.

McClendon is the player of the night. Look real good. Might be a little bias because we are both Troy alummi.

Happy with what I saw from the starters. As the 1st and 2nd team defense shut out the 1st and 2nd team Eagles offense which is what really matters.

You can only be so dissapointed with 3rd and 4th stringers but man did our offense line look bad in the 2nd half especially the tackles ! #61 RT got blown by on almost every play. He should be cut pronto!

Impressed with backup kicker and wow Rainey is fast and explosive.

I also do not mind replacement officials as they seem to let the players play and don't call as many dreadful and mind blowing flags as full time officials.

The only thing about the replacement officials is yea they did let them play but there were some facemask calls that were blatant and werent called...but for the most part they did pretty good

Didn't get to see...but listened on the radio...1st on 4 yard line...end up with 3pts...Red Zone trouble...2nd half offense sputtered...stuttered...and stalled...Rainey came alive...defense gives up 3 1st downs in a row on Eagles last drive...we got plenty work ahead...Red Zone.

One thing sure to be taken from this game is that we should fire Arians. :lolol: hahaha just kidding.

Thought DeCastro looked pretty good overall. Not so much Adams giving up 2 sacks in the 2 quarters he was on the field. Frankly none of our tackles played well. Lots of worked yet to do to keep Ben upright this year. I may have to re-think my prediction that we go 19 - 0.

I really don't ever want Byron to be in a regular season game.

Brown didnt get burned one the Gilyard TD...he was with him and just didnt get his head around in time, thats not getting burned. And the TD where the WR was wide open...the announcers didnt know who was covering him it as all the DBs were out of place...so that TD could be on anyone they said.

Yes at times Johnson looked a little like DIXON.

Yeah Adams made 2-3 mistakes I saw...once or twice he led the DE around but the QB had stepped back and he went right into him. The other one I dunno what happened but the DE slid in front of him and over to the QB. But he did make a few nice blocks also. I wouldnt say he was terrible, but not great either. Hopefully his knee doesnt keep him out long. And yeah DeCastro looked fine to me.

Anyways...as most I thought Rainey did well...Batch had a rough first couple runs and then looked good after that. Would have liked to see Will Johnson more. Cortez did pretty well. Butler punted well and ol' Suisham looked decent (but that can easily change). McLendon looked awesome, Ta'amu showed some potential. Woods looked decent and is probably leading the battle for the last DE spot. Carter looked better now that he's put on some muscle/etc...and has a quick first step. Spence seemed to be around the ball a lot. LB Robinson and Johnson both were impressive. Ummmm...theres probably more but thats all I can think of right this second.

    PS - I HATE KDKA's coverage...terrible cameramen/angles/etc.

I thought Batch was fine.....The plays called were a lot of dives up the middle...which will never be his forte...let alone with 3rd string Oline in front of him.

The Steelers list 14 OL on their roster...but clearly only have 9...and maybe only 7 if you ask them to play out of position.

Beachum is not a Tackle...and I would stop having him even learn the spot....its G or nothing this year for him...and its more then likely just PS

Curtis Brown needs to step up his game....he is #4 at best right now.

Sly doesn't know how to finish.

Spence did nothing spectacular...and nothing bone headed

Brandon Johnson was a solid pickup

I think he has ZERO chance to make the roster this year...but I really liked what I saw out of NT Kade Weston....on the Eagles final TD....Weston gets a good 3 to 4 yard push....and is still right there are the goal line chasing down the WR. I would like to see Weston play some DE as well.

Adams game was perfect.....now the coaches know exactly what he needs to work on this week.....Decastro...never heard his name....Ill take that as good.

Rainey is going to play A LOT.

Fredrick is the new Willie Gay

Offense was so vanilla I thought BA might still be calling plays.....multiple BATCH dive plays inside the 5.

    Ben is Ben

I think the Steelers could cut down to about 60 without blinking today

It was against back-ups but the rookie LB Adrian Robinson was in the Eagles backfield a lot.

It'll be interesting to see how he does if he gets to play behind the first or even second string line.

Batch's plays were running straight into the line...when guys who will be delivering for Dominos in a month were blocking....the few times there was some space...I thought he made some nice cuts and moves.....Batch needs to be the 3rd down guy...get him out in space....but I thought he ran hard...even when he was being hit 6 yards deep when he took the handoff.

I was at this game and here's what I saw, in no particular order.

First team oline seemed to play well together. When Adams did give up the sack, at least he was right there to fall on the ball.
    E. Sanders seemed to play well when he was given the opportunity.
I can see Haley having an AWFULL LOT of fun with Rainey as a weapon.
Marquis Maze looks really small. Almost like a high school kid. On the opposite end Ta'mu is one Big dude.
There was a lot of underneath stuff open. I can already see some of Hayley's influence.
Kind of unimpressed with both Leftwich and J. Johnson. I don't really like either as a backup.
The replacement refs weren't that bad, but some stuff was missed. Like for instance, when the Eagles challenged that td, it should have been automatically reviewed because it was a potential scoring play.
    First team defense played solid.
Ta'muu looks like hes going to command a double team a lot, which is exactly what they're looking for. But, I did see him give up on a few plays once they were past him. He will need to work on that.
Hrapman will need to work on hang time for his kicks. I watched him doing warmups and quite a few didn't stay airborne enough.
After hearing all the hype about Batch, I was rather underwhelmed

As for the Eagles, whoever that player with the dreads was that was returning kicks, hes one fast dude.
Their punter absolutely crushes the ball in practice. The ball just seems to hang there forever.

Kind of a cool aside, I was sitting near a few people that had made up Steelers shirt with #19 on them. I saw this kid enter late in the game and make a catch. The whole family was giddy as that was their son / brother. I thought that was pretty cool. I wish the kid the best, but its an uphill battle.

Actually no that play that was reviewed and ended up being a TD would NOT have been automatically reviewed. It was initially called short inside the 1 yard line...not a TD...and only when a play is ruled a score is it automatically reviewed.

David Johnson apparently tore his ACL and will most likely be out for the season :(

    good:
    - focus on running game (39 plays running to 26 plays passing)
    - involvement of the running backs in the passing game (7 receptions)
    - time of possesion in 1st half

    bad:
    - only 5 receptions by WRs
    - kicking strength of Hrapmann (in my opinion a nfl kicker must be able to get a touchback on almost every kickoff)
    - two big play TDs allowed
    - defense on last drive
    - red zone offense

    ugly:
    - oline play (7 sacks in 26 passing plays is just awful, 10 running plays for a loss)
    - injury to David Johnson
