I saw Marvel Smith as a 49er at a practice once, before he had to quit because of his back. I watched him every play, and every play he was going against Kentwaan Balmer, a 1st round pick I believe going into his 2nd year, and Smith just brutally kicked his ass every play, bad back and all. It was awesome.

I, like every Steeler fan, would love to be there to show them how much they were appreciated by Steeler Nation. Aaron Smith will always be one of my all time favorites.

It would be a great night to be in Latrobe. 4 Fantastic Steelers.

Here's to Aaron Smith making the HOF some day down the road. Even though his stats aren't gaudy, I think Aaron Smith was almost bigger than the game, and I think his performance may have turned enough voters minds during his playing career. Along with Richard Seymour, he may be the best 3-4 DE ever to play the game.

Being born in '85, I don't have a ton of viewing experience from a time before the early-mid 90s. But from what I've seen, I'd say the first two spots go to Aaron Smith and the other Smith, Bruce.

No word from Farrior, as I don't believe he's signed with anyone? Perhaps he's hoping for a mid season signing as an injury replacement.

I thought it was cool to see that 3 of the 4, played ONLY for the Steelers, in their whole careers. Very rare nowadays, even if Willie`s whole career was only six years. Pretty good ones for an undrafted free-agent.
Also liked hearing Porter say he understood why Hines could never play for another team, admitting it was hard for him to put on another jersey, and he always thought of what "his guys", were doing over here.
(not sure if this was in the same article, or not, but I read it about the same time, just before coming on here.)
Yeah, it would have been a great nite to be there! :yeehaw:

Only one of the 3 played for Pittsburgh their entire career....of course we know about Joey....but Willie went to Washington (though he didnt do much might not have even made the final cut if I remember) and Marvel went to SF, again I dont think he did much or made the final roster I dont remember here either...but technically all but 1 signed with another team even if for only a short time.

I was at Joey Porter's last game as a Steeler and his first game back at Heinz when he was with the Dolphins. There were a few boos but mostly people really still seemed to like him. However there were MANY boos when he picked Ben off. I always liked Willie a lot too. I wonder how long he would have stuck around if Cowher would've stayed. Am I the only one who thinks he just didn't seem to be Mike Tomlin's cup of tea? Or was it just strictly business to get rid of him?

I think Willie was on a downward slide before we got rid. He wasn't the same after the injury he picked up in St Louis. Basically, once he slowed a little, he lost his main weapon, and wasn't really worth keeping around after.

Since we're getting so technical, I believe Bleedsteel said "played for" and not "signed with." It's true that both of those guys had practices with, but never once suited up for or "played for" them in a game. Now, what does the word "play" mean, anyway? Can we count practices? Can we count any type of play, such as Texas Hold 'Em or see-sawing or tag? Did Keith Williams "play for" the Steelers? Did I "play for" them when I played catch at Three Rivers with my cousin for their amusement?

Truly, a debate for the ages...

I just got done watching the video from last night on the Steelers main site. Does anyone know if Aaron is sick? I know after the injury and surgery he might have taken time to heal but he looks so thin. You can really tell he wasn't hitting the weights in preparation for the season. I am not sure I will ever be use to seeing someone other than Aaron Smith out there. He truly is to me what it means to be a Steeler.

That was the first thing I noticed, too. It's crazy to see him so much thinner like that. I haven't seen anything about him being sick, though. I don't think it's uncommon for retired players to stop their conditioning and nutrition program, and like you mentioned, I'm sure he lost a lot of weight just from recovering from his neck surgery. I heard Hoke say last week that he lost 60 pounds from a year ago. That's insane.

I"m glad these guys are dropping the pounds, because carrying that kind of weight around long term and into later years is a ticking time bomb for their health.

I remember after Hartings retired, everybody wanted him to come back (since, you know, his replacement was voted on this message board "Worst Steeler of All Time"). But after only one year it was too late, he'd lost like 100 pounds.

Smith wasn't exactly as tubby as an offensive lineman, but he was no James Harrison either. It was best for him to lose weight once his career ended. It's not like he needs to kick everyone's ass all day anymore. We have it on tape, we know he can do it. ;-)
